Game Impressions After all the deafening hype I'm really sad to say I find the game absolutely unplayable on the iPhone and just about manageable on the iPad. The iPhone control scheme necessitates completely obscuring the entire bottom left and right corners of the screen to play. In a game about quick responses and over sensitive (in my opinion) collision detection not being able to see what button you're pressing or the character you're controlling is absolutely fatal. Deleted in pure frustration after losing my character under my thumb for the dozenth time. So the iPad version should be better but it barely gets away with it. The controls are stuck as close to the bottom of the screen as possible in both orientations. This makes portrait mode unplayable because the iPad becomes top heavy and unstable in your grip. Or gripping it better puts the controls out of comfortable reach. The landscape orientation is much more grippable but ultimately I was defeated by not getting to the buttons quickly enough because I can't actually feel them. I honestly have no idea why touch arcade, ars technica and euro gamer all say the controls are divine. They aren't, theyre at best the least awful touch implementation of what should really be a hardware controller. I realise all opinions vary. For me this was a constant exercise in frustration with the controls. I can see the game would be extremely addictive if unsuitability on a touch platform was not a factor.
I know it was only 69p but I could have spent that on a Twirl and I would have got way, way more enjoyment from it. Really wish Apple would make a way offer demos of all apps, or an easy money back feature within a couple of hours of purchase.
+1. Sometimes it doesn't even look close to a collision on screen but is detected as being one. If it looks close on screen you can be sure that you won't get away with it. I agree that this game should be played on a controller! It is fast arcade action and therefore real buttons are definately a plus (-> iCade!). But this problem is not unique to this game. I would go as far as saying that most iOS games would play better on a real controller. Only a few games really incorporate touchscreen controls into game design. This one is definately not one of them
There is such option - Refund. But it is quite hard to find on iTunes I don't even know where it is. Well, controls are simply matter of taste. They could be better ( LoE masters that element I think ) but I play pretty 'easy' Game is hard - and this is something that not everyone likes. And by developing Commander Pixman I know that creating 'good' controls is a very hard thing on touch devices. There is no physical controllers ( built-in ) and we must deal with it. One more issue: small collision issue when you jump against platform edge, then your hero could stuck. Pretty annoying in some 'hot action' moments! But hey guys - this is the first release, I bet that first update will fix most of the issues.
I find the game very difficult to play on an iPhone as well. I haven't tried it on my iPad nor iCade yet.
37 is my highscore since this seems to have turned into a bragging game. Anyways tips are run to box's first while maintaining low counts of enemy's. Also realize the individual things that make each weapon unique. Easily one of my all time favorite games.
Great game, but if it wasn't for the last update that seemed to add quite a bit of lag to it, I'd still probably favor Muffin Knight. I really like the feel of the different weapons in SCB, but as much as I don't mind games that are "hard", I find the maps in this leave so little room for error that it ends up being a bit more frustrating that MK. By time you jump to a different level and try to take out an enemy, there's so little distance between you that more than often I die landing on an enemy with no chance to take it out. Stay on the bottom level where you were and you've got them jumping on you. Granted, if you nail the timing perfectly, you'll succeed. I definately need a lot more practice. I know SCB came before MK, but maybe that's the issue for me. I got used to using "perks" like double jumping that lent a bit of a helping hand. Still haven't cracked 10 to open the second level. All that said, it's still fantastic and I dig the faster pace. I just suck at it.
Yeah collisions are somewhat sensitive and yes the game should be played with controls. That's what I've been saying this whole time. No matter, the devs can't please everyone and this game plays d@mn good, for what it is, on my iPod. If you want controls buy the peripheral equipment. No major complaints from me and a dollar well spent!
I've directed the devs to my posts here and so want to stress my problem is not with the game itself or it's obviously high level of challenge. It's just the disappointment with control decisions after reading so much about how they were totally nailed.
iControlpad . . . Has anyone else had any problems using the iControlpad with Super Crate Box? It works with other games in iCade mode, e.g., Mega Worm and EnbornX. I've got a Verizon iPhone 4 . . .
How much is this on the MAS and does it recognise a wired 360 controller? I want to play but can't help but want to hurl my iPad across the room every time...
I bought one but had to return it as it was defective. I was just thinking that it would great for this game once I get my replacement iCP. Good for my train commute. Sad if it doesn't work.
I really like the game but I suck, I think the biggest challenge is the controls which I just don't seem to think work well with the iPhone/iPod Touch touch screen controls. I also find that sometimes my character seems to get stuck on some edges when I try to jump to a new ledge and there are also times where my thumbs cover the action on the screen.
Yeah, it seems like a Super Crate Box issue . . . I even updated the firmware to the 2.2 prerelease/alpha and no dice . . . Since it works with other App Store games in iCade mode, I'm not thinking mine's defective or anything.
At first it was extremely hard, but now I'm loving it! My fav guns so far: Disc Gun - I love how it slings back like a boomerang Rocket Launcher - Total destruction!! Mini Gun - Though it throws me back even harder than shotgun, it's still extremely powerful!
crashing on 3GS. works fine for me on ipad2 , 4, and 4s. -downloaded on 3gs, crash -reboot, crash -download again on itunes and install, crash -another reboot, crash i get a loading screen then here a "gunblast" type sound and its back to the homescreen. hope the devs can work this out. device info: jailbroken 3GS on 5.0.1; full battery; 12.1Gb free; no other apps running edit: seen on a page back that the devs know about the problem.
Yeah, I love how the mini gun isn't just the machine gun as it sprays bullets in a much wider spread as well.
