It's an arcade game to the 1st degree! To a retro lover, like myself, this is top notch fun. F*ck multiplayer. The best thing about arcade style games were competing for the high score individually. Plus MP doesn't even make since due to how ridiculously fast paced this game is. As far as MK, it was just froo froo nonsense. IMO, it wasn't fun at all. This game is pixel art, kicks my butt, and I keep coming back for more. They saw a good game (SCB) and just dolled it up for the iOS consumer that loves googly eyes. Pocketgamer put it best, but I wouldn't have given them the same score. SCB by a mile due to it being way more fun. http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/Multiformat/Super+Crate+Box/review.asp?c=36553
Not a major issue - but playing SFMT mode (in construction yard anyway) brings up the "New High Score" message, regardless of your score, not sure it had been mentioned. AWESOME game!!!
I don't know, I can easily recall arcade games having some sense of progression and purpose. Here I see neither. I played long enough to unlock the second map which played painfully similar to the first, and now have little desire to go back to the game at all. Perhaps it's just me; I can certainly see a lot of folks seem to enjoy this, hence my wondering what I might be missing. I thought the game was very cool for the first 5-10 minutes, but that was quickly replaced by the question "is that it?"
I'm a bit concerned I'll have the same issue. I'll probably try it out, but I'm not sure it's going to have either the depth or the progression needed to hold my interest. Jetpack Joyride is shallow, but the progression keeps me coming back. I don't really see that here, but again, I'll need to play it before I can really comment.
Great game... 4.5/5 very addictive.I like the retro pixel art.Extremely challenging (frustrating actually, in a good way).Alot less forgiving that Muffin Knight, you must be strategic when using weapons. For instance the Mini Gun has a powerful recoil that will send you backwards causing death depending on where you are standing.Disc Gun,great weapon but if not timed correctly will come hurling back to you causing death (I unintentionally committed suicide countless times with this weapon). In the update add more levels, 3 is a good starting point but clearly not enough. This is on of those games once you start playing it is hard to put down, constantly trying new ways to beat your previous score.Game of the week easily 925000 Crates Collected Whole Wide Currently playing:Gta 3,Infinity Blade 2,WindUp Knight,Mage Gaunlet,Modern Combat 3,Anomaly Warfare,Space Tripper,Zombie Gunship,Zombieville 2,Epoch ,Shadowgun,Cod Boz,Sonic Cd,Sandwiches and SUPER CRATE BOX
The progression is the high score and sense of getting better if that makes sense. They also threw in some achievements for replay value. Did you read the Pocketgamer review because they explained it very well! http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/Multiformat/Super+Crate+Box/review.asp?c=36553 Plus there are all types of arcade games just like more modern games. I guess it just depends on individual taste. This is the type of mindless fun that I like. Look at the crate counter... almost 1 million crates and the game just came out. This is pure, addictive, and mindless arcade fun!!!
Game Impressions I'm liking it so far even though I suck horribly and just barely lucked into opening the third map. While there is a lot of obvious overlap with MK (how could there not be?), I do appreciate SCB's faced paced retro purity. I also appreciate how the Bazooka and Laser Rifle actually seem to be fairly unique weapons without an obvious MK parallel. I initially thought the Laser Rifle was the clear inspiration of MK's Frog, but I don't recall the Frog's tongue in MK actually acting as a handy melee weapon before it fires?
Years ago all games where like this, it's how arcade games are ment to be: get the highscore. Think of Pacman, a great game but like SCB repetive but as long as the game is good it doesn't give a f*ck.
I know what Gabrien is saying, to me its a bit like Pacman, i love playing probably just one level to get those nostalgic feelings back but after you've done one maze then its the same the next level and you get bored. There is variety here with all the weapons and levels and yep i love the pixel art, it reminds me of an early 80's arcade game. Looking forward to trying it on my iCade later. But i love single screen games like this (Eg Bubble Bobble) and oldskool 80's gameplay, theres not tons of depth but this is the type of old arcade game i like coming back to frequently
fun game, no regrets buying it at all. however, i think i'm missing something. i guess i should have looked into it more than just the trailer (i thought it was a platformer, not a single screen thing that was just endless hordes), but is this it? you collect crates and shoot the same few bad guys into infinity? i watched the gameplay trailer on the first thread page, and was thinking one thing: 'why isn't this guy collecting the crates?!?'. seriously, if your score is based on how many crates you get, why would you just hang out shooting baddies? is there some hidden element to this game that helps it reach the level of hype it has? and yeah, that's a serious question. i like the game enough, but i don't see why people were falling over themselves to get this on the iphone.
Well, as an example, the closest classic arcade title I can compare this to is Bubble Bobble. I played that game to death, both in arcades and on various home/portable consoles. Whatever it was about that game that "clicked" for me is missing here. (And I could write paragraphs about what it was, but I'll spare you.) Honestly, I think at worst you'll still get a buck's worth of fun, and possibly a fair bit more, so I wouldn't hesitate to try it. My comments are largely driven to be inversely proportional to the hype surrounding this title. Had it been a random release I'd more than likely praise it as a "very promising start" and recommend an easy purchase for a buck.
I really wish people would read the Pocketgamer review I posted. It answers all ofthese question being asked! The better weapon/get crate dilemma is part of what makes the game even more of an awesome challenge! HERE IT IS...AGAIN!!! http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/Multiformat/Super+Crate+Box/review.asp?c=36553 I mean, every game isn't for every person. Like you said at the very least you'll get your buck's worth unless you absolutely detest the style.
This game is pure arcade bliss. Play the level, get a high score. To get that score, collect crates while killing the bad guys that stand in your way. So to answer - yes, there is no real "hidden" element apart from amazing gameplay to beat your high scores.
I must be missing something. How the hell do I get back to the main menu once I start a game??? On the Pause screen I see nothing about the main menu. I keep having to force quit the game in the multi-tasking bar to get there. BTW AMAZING game! Despite how incredibly awful I am at it... (high score = 4) Edit: Nevermind, I'm an idiot...
Top left hand corner during game play - the pause button. Then the third option (after sound and music) should be "Main Menu"
Just a word on the "but it's a high score game!" argument: High score games are comprised of combos, multipliers, and leaderboards decided by 5+ figure sums. (This is also known as "depth" when it comes to high score games.) Number of crates collected alone, doesn't quite cut it. Why on earth do we not get points for shooting the enemies? That alone would add a lot to the "high score" appeal.
Grabbed this last night, and it is a pretty good game. I can see why some types of gamers will prefer this over Muffin Knight, I'm just not one of them. Way too old to care about turning gaming into a serious affair, and this stripped down "arcade purity" versus the myriad little touches and flourishes of Muffin Knight (e.g. the loading screens that break down stats about the various characters and enemies for you relative to your GC friends, the sense of progression, the style of the characters, etc.) leave me lukewarm. Whereas MK keeps me coming back to see if I can get a little farther on the progression, I suspect this game will gone off the device as soon as the novelty wears off.
