I must be dreaming... LOL and I've realized a little too late, I should not have taken the 3 health minion, should have taken zombie warrior which increases my chances to have extra free minions... :(

How long has the five-for-fighting Challonge invite been open? Six, seven weeks? It may be time to rethink this thing. A tournament should be a lot of fun but this one is not going to happen unless it happens very soon.

Just in case, reminder to new visitors to this SW thread....

There is a tournament posted in Challonge.

    http://challonge.com/tournaments/signup/5c8jurbss2

Pick five factions and post them here and register for the tourney. We need two more chumps, I mean champs. :p

    Do it.

Yeah, I doubt that tourney is going to be a success even if we get the remaining participants. We don't have a strong enough base here. Its better to join/create a tourney at the PHG forums instead.

Also, I know we would get more participants and a quicker tourney if we cut it down to 3 or 4 decks, but I wanted to keep it 5 so most people don't just join with PE/GD/TO.

Okay, it's been quite a while since the app has been out, let's take a look at faction stats.

    PE - 21/4
    TO - 3/4
    GD - 17/7
    CG - 28/16

    FK - 24/22
    CL - 43/28
    JE - 20/13
    VG - 28/17

I'm mostly a CL/VG mainer, now also playing CG/JE a lot. When I first started playing the game I used FK exclusively for my first 25 or so games.

Why not do a "pick your poison" tourny then? Most of the players on here are beginners so it only makes sense that they would stick to PE/GD/TO. Multi deck tourneys like a 4x4 just means less interest because they force new comers to use decks they haven't mastered.

At least with PYP the cost of entry is cheap (99 cents for your 2nd faction) and since you're only using 2 decks it's easier to plan your strategies.

You could also restrict it to the standard decks so there's no reinforcement trickery which would help new players as well.

    Just my thoughts

I'm not really looking for a beginner tourney, the app has been around long enough that interested people should be able to graduate to the more complex factions. A 2-deck PYP tourney will just mean a whole mess of GD/PE/TO or at least teams with one GD/TO/PE. Even in the GenCon tourney most people brought at least one of the stock factions, which would make for a very boring tourney, for me at least. I'm not saying it shouldn't happen, just that I won't create or participate in it.

And banning reinforcements is such a bad idea, effectively cutting the game down to the state it was 2 years ago if you're using the starter decks. Again, it would probably be fun for beginners, but I'll pass.

    Alright then...

If you want Five for Fighting with serious players that look down on anyone that picks GD/TO/PE then stick with PHG where the vast majority of players have been playing for over a year and in some cases it's closer to three. The physical game has 16 factions with all but 2 having reinforcements (and even those are releasing soon). As a matter of fact they are already moving to the 2nd Summoners.

The iOS app has been out for what? A month and a half!? To expect players to be well versed in at least 4 of the 8 factions and their reinforcements seems a bit much. That's not even including the people who just picked the everything bundle during the GenCon sale a few days ago or the fact that you have an intense dislike for 37% of the initial factions.

I'm talking about helping new comers get excited about playing and having some competitive fun.

You're talking about a deep tourney where there is not enough interest because the entry requirements are too high... But you refuse to participate or even contribute to a tourney that may have a high turn out of the factions you look down upon. It's just silly.

    So here's my open invitation:
Anyone wanting to play me in Summoner Wars feel free to add me.
You want to play sans-reinforcements? You got it
You want to play Pick Your Poison? Let's do it
Hell, you want to just PICK what deck you want me to play? I'm fine with that too

You can even PM me on here to talk strategy after a match, if you need advice DURING a match I'll even help you out (I've masterminded my own loss on several games so far)

Just give me at least 7 days for a match (preferably 14) and I'll always accept

It's just a matter of preference. Anyone is free to create a tourney with easier requirements intended to generate interest in the app with beginners and newcomers. I've played my share of PE/GD/TO matches so I'm not interested in that. I don't see why you're taking such offence to my lack of interest :(

My most played faction is FK, the weakest one of the bunch. Let's put it this way....while winning is nice, it's not everything. Yes, I have a losing record with FK but I very much like the possibilities of creatively putting together the most effective deck I can. It's like a puzzle. Then playing out that puzzle as effectively as possible.

From what I can see, some players play with everything and are always ready to experiment, like onewithchaos. Good on him. Totally unpredictable. And then some stick with just the big three (TO, GD and PE) or even just two factions, either concerned about their win/loss record, or too embarrassed to lose an occasional game. So predictable. Bad on them.

I'm in 8 games right now, playing 6 different factions, 2 PE, 2 JE, 2 Vanguard, 1 each TO, FK, Cloak.

My opponents are playing 1 each TO, JE and Vanguard, 2 are playing GD and 4 are playing PE.

I hope PE does not begin to monopolize everything.

My tournament idea. Double elimination, first match up is a random deck, except no mirror matches are permitted.

Second and subsequent matches, choose a deck from those you have not already played, again, no mirror matches are permitted.

If you play four rounds you will play four different factions.

Mirrors are randomly decided who keeps his choice and who must re-choose. If you ever mistakenly choose a faction you've already chosen, you are disqualified. The only way you can choose a faction you've already played is if a tournament somehow goes past 8 rounds.

When games are reported, factions used must be reported as well.

    Does the above sound reasonable?

MLKeener, gg but you made a few rookie mistakes.

    - Never summon a unit that you're not going to use that turn, unless you have a very clear plan for it. If you keep burning your magic for commons you'll always be left struggling to put more than 1 or 2 champs out.

-It's usually a good plan to not waste dice on a Cloaked or Invincibilty'd unit. Instead you could have copied a thief that turn and stolen Vlox back to a safe wall.

-Always try to occupy spaces adjacent to an opponent's walls to prevent him from summoning units next turn, especially if he has only one wall up.

-Don't waste critical events like Cloak of Shadows or Assassinate. They are gamechangers, Assassinate can be used to remove a common that might be protecting a summoner and Cloak should be saved for moments when you have a very clear plan for the next turn

I'm assuming this was your first time playing CL because you missed a few key tricks. But you still did great to expose my error of leaving Vlox open for an attack by a Blindside. Whenever you Blindside Vlox to the other side, always keep in mind how you're getting him back. It could be via a Steal or another Blindside, a Steal is usually preferable. You should conserve Thieves to make full use of Raid, stealing a card not only gives you a potential champ or event, but also reduces one potential magic from the opponent's coffers.

Yeah I think that Cloaks is the hardest faction to play properly. I'm in a bit of a FK frenzy now, then I'll switch over to CL or VG.

If you're looking for a tournament that isn't "beginner" level, why not go to a place like PHG or Quarter to Three? I wouldn't expect a mainstream site like TA to host what you're looking for. I only see a more beginner slanted tourney having a chance of getting off the ground here.

Yes, was only my second game to completion with CL. Truth be told, I think that was only my third or fourth completed game.
I played the tutorial and maybe two offlines and then jumped in.

One thing you didn't mention is take the time to comptemplate (thief clone). I probably need to slow down and try to not play turns while cooking for the kids!

Honestly, thank you very much for the critique!

Ok... Am I just dense or is there a bug in Summoned by Blood on Elut-Bal? I've sacrificed five units and still can't get him on the field with two magic in stock.

What happened isn't exactly a bug but something that can confound first time players. When you sacrifice units for Summon By Blood you must summon Elut immediately after sacrificing the units, BEFORE pressing Done. If you don't those units no longer count towards the sacrifice. When Elut can be summoned the card will have a white border, when you can only use his ability he will have a blue border.
