I have been playing for a few days now, and feel mechanics are good overall but the luck factor drives me insane sometimes. It does keep things always "interesting" but solid strategy crumbles all too often to the mighty dice lords. But it does make for games to go fairly fast. Strategy games too often get clunky and bogged down. So I think this "weakness" is a real strength of the game if you play expecting some crazy turn arounds and upsets. But means at best it is very casual level strategy. And again thats not an insult, it just isnt a deep thought game. Its fast, fun, and exciting. However. Ive come to the decision I am going to concede against Tundra Orcs every single time. I can beat them. But they are vastly over powered and worse not fun to play -against-. And Im playing for fun after all. Its so skewed to me actually thought about buying the physical game at gencon but the complete lack of faction balance (take the rose colored glasses off and look at the leaderboards) has made me decide to play this strictly ios only. Vanguard, Cloaks, and Fallen Kingdom dont just require advanced players they require advanced draw/rolling skills ha. Regardless I enjoy the game for the $8 I paid and will buy expansions. Its an excellent time killer mobile game. But I feel it would make a disappointing board game experience.
Thanks! Hopefully I can pick up some CG pointers playing you. I still suck with them. My three best factions are PE, TO and GD - arguably the most basic. And yes, my tactics are changing wildly with time and experience.
I think you're actually wide of the mark here. The game is extremely strategic and requires real thought. The way I approach playing the game isn't so unlike the way I'd play chess. Every move you make has a consequence. Luck is a factor, but 90% of the time, the better player will triumph. If you roll 2 die for every one point of damage you hope to deal, you're looking at significantly good odds of at least dealing the damage you hope for. Players with records such as 125-35 aren't winning by pure luck and I know two with those kind of records and neither play TO. TO are not overpowered, they're just difficult to play against when you're a newer player and can't cope with their high health, high power combinations.
Once again. M apologies if I do not accept games. I am about to leave for a 12 day trip with only a ipad1 along as my iPad 2 is not 3G. This game seems not to work on the iPad 1, hence I might not be able to play for the next 12 days.
So true. The best players realize that luck may not work out and plan accordingly. Sometimes you have to make a move and pray to the dice gods but that's part of the beauty. Even in the most dire of circumstances you have a sliver of hope. TO are heavily luck based, I don't use them unless I'm looking for a challenge. Their stats are impressive but I always make sure to test my custom decks against them.
I know a couple of friends who play on iPad 1.. If you close all other running apps and reboot, and avoid too many taps or rotating the screen when it's processing, you can play. It still crashes sometimes, and also when you get a notification.
I feel like if you're needing to pray to the dice gods, you made a mistake earlier in the game. Also, TO are an interesting faction for sure, definitely unlike any of the others. They're roll based so much, but you could even argue the opponents are the ones who need the luck. The opponents of a TO player need to get lucky with poor rolls from the TO in order to win.
That's what I meant. In a few games I've been blindsided by my opponent having reinforcements or mercenaries in their deck that I hadn't accounted for. I just had to make an all out attack and hope for the best. I've actually ended up winning a few games by hoping luck was on my side and making an attack.
Yeah the TO is basically the "taking a sledgehammer to a fly" faction with their brute strength and tanking! This would be the faction that I imagine would be the easiest for new players to learn the ropes and gain confidence (at least in my case ) I might try adding a couple Chargers to my deck to see how luck based mobility works out. Eventually I'm going to move on to a more finesse based faction such as the JE, CG or cloaks once I feel I'm actually competitive with my comrades
So TO are not overpowered they just can be? If they roll too well. But the game isnt overly dice ruled? Right. Well at best that still means a poor choice of mechanics (Fury) being in the game, and not capped. Also like I said they are a fun drain anyway to me. Im just stating an opinion of course and cant wait for new factions. Those filthy mutants sound interesting. So Im not insulting the game after all, but I dont have a personal investment in trying to ignore what I feel are painful mechanic flaws either.
Just got destroyed by Camzee. Wow that champion sure is powerful with high Hp. Just that it took a while to cast and your patience paid off. I tried to overwhelm you but I guess it's a bit too late. Couldn't move my summoner out of range in time. GG
Yeah I'd have been much more cautious with PE. 4 health summoner is a disaster waiting to happen. PS. Just had an epic game with onlyphoenix. Oh my god it was insane. On the single most important roll in the game with Gror, I got 2 1s which sealed my fate. I should have saved a Heroic Feat in truth. My one critical error. But unbelievable finish to that match!
Yeah, that was terrible luck. If it makes you feel any better, someone fury'd 5/5 against my Ret Talus with a fighter earlier in the day.
Super fun times! ... Thats a joke. Ah the Fighter. Its such a Trash unit if you cant roll well but so insane if you do. I made a no Fury at all TO deck. Its not "good" but its less frustrating for everyone playing. Still. The dice mean everything. -shrugs- its simply the truth. Honestly I wonder sometimes if I should have just bought yahtzee ha. But I love the TCG/Mini-game hybrid idea at least. Though its a novelty I think.
The problem with Fury is that it's an uncapped ability, unlike say Pummel. And Colby seems to have no intention of fixing the ability. As for the game, if you don't want to play a dice rolling game, don't. There isn't really anything else to it. I've had games where the dice have all but driven me away from the game, but there's a certain undeniable charm that keeps bringing me back. I'm considering cutting back on the games to a max of 5 at any time so I can focus more on Le Havre, Caylus and maybe Puerto Rico. For random fun I'll always have NSHex, SW and Nightfall.
