Me too minus the VG. Stick to the tundra orcs at the beginning to get your confidence up. Always build units you don't need into magic.
Quick question guys.. Which is better: Summoner Wars or Nightfall? I'm asking because Nightfall is on sale (0.99$) and I didn't get in SW jet. And with playing Outwitters most of my free time I don't have time to get into both of these.
I really depends on how your mind works. I hated Nightfall at first, but eventually something just clicked. I love it now. I think SW is going to be the same way with me. It is starting to click, but I've already completed over 20 games, and I still consider myself a complete newbie. Since you can demo SW for free, and Nightfall is only 99 cents, maybe go for both? Btw, there is a VERY patient, active online community for both games. No one minds answering questions, providing tips or filling in any gaps in the tutorial.
It's not a clear answer because both are very different games, here are some pros and cons: -Summoner Wars- Pros: Vast amount of content available with great variety, very suited to async play, free to try, deceptively simple but hides great depth, Cons: Easy to learn but tough to be competent, UI not suited for smaller iDevices, high ram usage (not recommended for iPad1 or touch4g) For: People who like tabletop warfare, SRPGs, chess, grid-based battles -Nightfall- Pros: Very unique chaining system, draft system means players have equal opportunity, first expansion out next month Cons: Tough to learn, UI not suited for smaller iDevice, not a good fit for async model For: People who like deck builders like Dominion and Ascension, Magic, confrontational games I would say grab Nightfall if you have any experience with Magic or any deck builder and try Summoner Wars for free using the Phoenix Elves against the AI to get a taste of the mechanics.
While Nightfall might become a bit more interesting with the upcoming expansion, it was one of those games that was interesting in theory but not that fun to play, at least IMHO. I like the drafting system to construct your deck, the actions and creature abilities are interesting, but the whole linking system really falls apart for me as, more often than not, it just boils down to the first player who can setup and spam a potent two cards (like an action card that links to a big creature card that can then link back to another copy of that action card and so on...) wins.
OK, thanks for answers. I'll take Nightfall as well. I went through tutorial in SW and it seemed complicated + graphics (and specially card descriptions) looks horrible on my 3GS so I gave up there. But as weekend comes I'll give it a go to both SW and Nightfall. I hope they are at least good as Ascension Chronicle.. Thanks
Another "TA Plays" article... I give up. It's just a case of expecting too much. I hope Playdek and PHG do well even without the support of established iOS news sites. It was nice to see they were advertising on STP, a lot better than the advertising on TA
the gameplay is amazing I love it. so much I just ordered the master set and will be buying factions today on the site. I also bought ascension, but SW is my new fav game dethroning Neuroshima Hex.
Neo-sapphire...What the Hell just happened with the game we JUST played? Goblins vs Dwarves, I just finished my attack phase then my summoner blew up!?! I actually thought I was getting the edge in this battle, do you know what happened as I'm clueless? Grats on the win, I'm coming after ya again! EDIT: Nevermind, it was my own damn champion Gror that did me in, his description states ALL adjacent units also get attacked, not enemy units only. Who's the fool now Dwarf players learn from this mistake!
I agree with what's been said by tecwtr, sapphire, and lordgek. Games are very different, so it really depends on the type of game you like more (the tactics/chess type or the deck building type). I personally like SW more, though I haven't bought it and haven't really figured all of it out yet. Nightfall to me is just not well balanced. As Lordgek said, there's really only one strategy, which is to chain the most powerful creatures. Whoever does that successfully will most likely win. Ascension and Dominion feel much more flexible and dynamic. So I personally would recommend SW if you like this type of game. If not, maybe just stick with Asc. Then again, for $1, it's easy enough to try NF.
I don't have Nightfall so can only comment on SW. Pretty much echo what everyone's been saying. SW's basic rules is pretty easy, but to play well is difficult. To me, the main difficulty is how to use each unit. Give the game sometime and hopefully you'll get the "eureka" moment. =) Ascension is pretty hard to beat for my game preferences. Easy to get into and games are quick.
Don't give up. I own the board game but don't play it much cause it's hard to find people to play with. Now that I have people to play with I realized how terrible I am at it. It's not that I suck, I just had not learned the fundamentals of the game like when and what to burn for magic, when to play champs and commons, I could go on and on. My advice is to play online and learn from your losses. There are some great players out there and I have learned a great deal lossing to them. Dont worry about your win/ loss record, just pay attention to what your opponent is doing during the game. I've found games I can pick up and master the first time I play that I quickly loss interest in. It's games like this that you can never full master that are the most fun, IMO.
OT: If you have not grabbed NF, grab it while it is still for sale. Totally worth it (even though I am suck at it too). Expansion is expected to be out in next month. I think I should spend more time on SW, even the Phoenix Elf clan has some variations I should try before heading to other clans. All hail the Deck Builder. (and no, I have not forgotten Magic 2013)
I hate it when a 1/1 common rolls godly furiies and hits my champ 4 times in one turn. I think there should be a cap on the fury attempts. Actually in a game with tecwrtr now and he furied Malevolence to death. Hehehe.
I grabbed NF but still have to try it. Honestly, I am kind of discouraged by SW . I'm now playng with three factions to understand what they can do and try weird things (sorry if you see me being aggressive fast with JE ... Or playing with VG clearly not having a clue ) to learn. But honesty, I doubt I will ever fully play it decently and will most likely end up forgetting it like others games on my iPads. Ascension and Magic have proved easier to grab and I seem to play decently so far. Ascension is still my favourite because resources are fixed and constrained. Fr me the concept of one common deck is fantastic and makes asension game where luck can be controlled and cards pretty much controllable. And Magic has great card combos that can turn a game fate if properly planned. Ps: I prefer NHex to SW so far ...
There's no way you can successfully argue that Ascension isn't more luck based than SW. magic I'd even argue is much easier to get land screwed than dice screwed in SW. but really if you're not enjoying the game move on to something else man.
(deleted useless previous answer) Onewithchaos that was wicked! I could have lost in one turn, bit I got lucky and my trap worked. That switch event is really powerful! I always thought JE was a fun faction (I played once before with the AI) with those archers and events. I guess I just ditch the orcs altogether and focus on JE and VG.
