Trying to create an offline game or an online game? If online, are you inviting someone or is the other slot open?

One review summed it up as a combination of Magic the Gathering and Stratego. While this comparison is a little too simplified and doesn't quite work on many levels, it at least gives you a tiny starting point to understand what the game is about.

Perhaps also "Neuroshima Hex on a chessboard". ^_^

trying to create a game online. as soon as I hit the "create game" app would crash.

I've deleted and reinstalled an that seems to have worked.

Hmm... I always feel a bit more overwhelmed by Neuroshima, because there seem to be many more tiles to learn for each faction... But that might just be me. ;)

If you're referring to that LoTR Living Card Game by Fantasy Flight, the similarities really only exist with the faction purchasing/deck building model. Summoner Wars is a lot like those Living Card Games (LoTRs, Game of Thrones) that Fantasy Flight makes in that new faction decks are released periodically and allow a bit of mix-in-match deck building. But the game mechanics are a good bit different - Summoner Wars is much more accessible and easy to learn (yet hard to master :)). While I enjoy those Fantasy Flight LCGs, they tend to be overly complex. With SW, you can grasp the basic mechanics pretty quickly - you spend your time learning the strategies each faction has to offer.

From a mechanics standpoint, it's always reminded me a bit much of Neuroshima Hex (except on an Orthogonal grid vs Hex). You have factions with units with specialized traits/powers, and your goal is to destroy your opponent's Headquarters/Summoner by reducing their hitpoints to zero. The "summoning" economy and other intricacies is of course different between the two games, but its a reference point if you're looking for something similar.

Undo must be delivered! I did the same thing with Fire Drake.

it's happened to me with FK summoner. sucks to drain your magic by 3 only to summon one unit :p

I'm not sure this will help, given the esoteric nature of the game I'm about to namedrop :), but I've seen some comparisons to Dreamblade.

Oh, which reminds me: Playdek, an iOS port of Dreamblade, possibly with the same faction/purchase model as Summoner Wars? Please? Pretty please?

(Yes, I know it is not quite that simple, not simple at all, what with acquiring a publishing/porting license for a board game, even more so for an out of print title, and all that, but... Pretty, pretty please? ;) )

Honestly, it might just be better to have the game let you drag to attack as standard, then prompt for normal/special attack rather than rely on you touching a certain part of the card. Perhaps make this an option at least, as on an iPhone/iPod attacking can be a bit fiddly unless you're zooming in before selecting the card.

Urghh my luck is horrendous in this game, 3 dice 3 to hit, 2 x 1 and 1 x 2. Ooh I'll attack that card that's just come next to my summoner... Oh no you won't you'll trigger his ability instead. C'mon champion card, nope have events instead. I like the game but damn, can't say I'm enjoying it yet.

If you have a card where the character is glowing you have a special ability that can be used.

If that's the case your card splits in half; Swiping from the left side is your normal attack, swiping from the right will activate your ability.

There is definitely a lot of luck involved in the game but that's where the excitement comes from. Even if you are being trampled by superior strategy there is a chance for victory if lady luck is on your side.

    Hope that helps

Yup, once we get a good set of games going in the Ascension group we'll all start improving.

Yeah, I'm there with you. I've played the physical set of the Summoner Wars Master Set a few times, so I was familiar with the rules, but I've never played with any of the "original" factions included in this initial release. I'm still learning what does what and how to make the most of each faction given their strength.

The faction balance is there - we just have to take the time to find it. And if you bought the whole bundle, there's a lot to absorb between the 8 included factions, the reinforcements, and the mercenaries.

Win or lose, I've having a great time with it!

I took it all also, but I would be an easy kill by most people here. I only defeated the elves once so far! :(

It does seem to put a heavy drain, even on an iPad.

In case people haven't noticed, Playdek has hugely improved the notifications which immediately drop you into the match which generated the notification. Multitasking also drops you into the Lobby if you had switched while playing an online game. I hope they bring these improvements to Ascension and Nightfall eventually.
