    Game Impressions

Updated and playing it now, Kiloo-Jeppe!

Okay, this may be one of the most addictive games I have ever played, and I own a gaming PC, XBox 360, and PS3 with full libraries of games on all the platforms. Definitely the best "swipe game" on any touchscreen!

I have, however, compiled a list of nit-picky criticisms I want to post since I know you guys are looking at this thread. And remember, this is nit-picking not deal breaking stuff! :p

    1. Challenges That Cannot Be Completed During Single Runs Or Ones That Take Too LONG During A Run:

Okay, this is my biggest complaint, and it can sometimes be a serious buzz kill! I have, over the past months, amassed tons of coins, and I love doing challenges. I am also able to get decently high scores. So one of my favorite things to do is complete the challenges during runs. The problem is that SO MANY challenges require you to not be playing or to end your present while you complete them! Things like "Poke a Friend," "Get caught within the first five seconds," etc.. I have had runs where I completed a present set of challenges and my score is, say a few hundred thousand, and then a set comes up that includes "Complete Three Daily Challenges!"

Youch! So now, I am frozen in limbo and have a choice: Complete the run with ten or twenty or more million points for a good run (with no ability to complete challenges!) or end my run and buy out of the challenges or do the ones (like "Collect Exactly 200 Coins") in a doomed run.

Solution: You guys need a pause menu that allows you to make in-game transactions WITHOUT ENDING YOUR RUN!

    Problem solved!

If I am doing a run where I am on pace to hit forty million, but for the final thirty eight million points I am stalled at NO CHALLENGES TO DO because the only challenge up on the board is "Complete Three Daily Challenges!" what the hell am I supposed to do, pause my game for seventy two hours and then HOPE that the next set doesn't include "Get Caught In the First Five Seconds?"

The easy solution is allow us to go to the full pause menu and then resume the game. That way, rather than stop my run because I don't want to "Get Exactly 200 Coins," I can pay the 4,500 coins, get credit for the challenge, and continue on my run WITH more challenges to do rather than just doing it for points and coins.

    2. Keys For Clothes?!!

Seriously, no offense, but are you f*cking kidding me?? :p First off, I would not pay ONE KEY for a single outfit, much less 15 or 40! Jeeze, guys, lol get a freaking clue! Keys are TOO USEFUL in this game to waste on outfits. Not only that but they are also too RIDICULOUSLY RARE to waste on outfits. Maybe give people a CHOICE to pay with coins or keys, for those too STUPID to realize that the "Save Me Keys" are far more valuable than a stupid outfit. lol First time I saw that you could buy clothes, I plunked down a ton of extra coins on them, then saw the outfits where you askjed for my precious keys, and the ONLY thing I could think of was, "Really? Go f*ck yourself, Nothing doing." I have collected every character and every outfit that you can buy with coins, but you guys aren't getting even ONE KEY for anything but a new life. Ha, just saying. ;)

    3. Unable to buy keys with anything but REAL MONEY?

Speaking of the Keys conundrum, I say again, Jeeze, guys, get a freaking clue! lol If I buy 100 mystery boxes, I may get one or two keys! If I score ten million on a run, I MAYBE will have 5 keys to pick up...if I am very lucky. Seriously, make keys purchasable in the pause menu for coins. Hell, charge a thousand coins per key if you have to.

Look, PLEASE make keys more plentiful during runs and purchasable with coins. I have NEVER even tried to complete a challenge like "Collect 10 Keys." Why? Because it is a ridiculous challenge that can take DAYS and is impractical to complete in a single run. The closest I came is in my 50 million+ point run, MAYBE I collected 5 or 6 keys in total. That's 6 keys in 50 million. Youch, too rare!

I get that they are supposed to feel valuable, but you seem to want us to piss FORTY away on one damned outfit that is nothing more than a novelty. How rare should they be at that cost?

    4. No WARNING if you are hitting the Home button on the in-game pause screen.

I posted this before, but will put it here again. If you are going to be effectively ENDING your run, not to mention losing all the keys you would have collected that are up on your screen in that run, at least, have a dialog box come up that says something like, "Are you sure you want to end your run? Warning: You will lose all coins showing on your screen for this run if you do!"

Well, that's it for now. Again, great game, but I have been meaning to post these for a while.

Hoo boy, the new update is BEAUTIFUL! New Orleans is the PERFECT choice for Halloween surfing goodness! :D

You haven't totally lived until you run across a giant pumpkin... ;):D

Edit: Just FYI ChiroVette, a bunch of us suggested using the Keys to buy outfits because we considered using them in-game to be a form of cheating, and wanted some way to get rid of them... Kiloo was merely obliging some of the more "purist" score-chasers by offering the option... Don't kill them, kill us. ;-)

I hear you, Drummerboycroy. I had no idea that you guys were the ones who insisted on the outfits for keys to get rid of all the keys you collect. Well, if that's the case, then I think it's cool.

Honestly, I like to own all the characters and outfits, but, truth be told, Sasha is the ONLY character I ever use anyway. The Bouncer Board is pretty much the only board I use ever, but I collected them all just for the purposes of collections and to add replay value to the game, giving me something to shoot for.

So I can live without all the outfits that cost keys, since I would never ever ever use them anyway, and if that satisfies the needs of you guys for getting rid of your keys, so be it. However, if you have, say 100 keys, you can get rid of them in like five minutes or less!

lol Have you considered that, since each use in the same run DOUBLES your key expenditure, then if you have even as many as 255 keys, you can simply kill yourself in the first few seconds of a run, use a key, then immediately kill yourself again, then use 2, then four, then 8, and 16, etc.

You can kill yourself and use keys and get rid of 255 keys in like two minutes, no?

Just a suggestion for anyone who doesn't want to use the keys. I personally LOVE them. My high score without keys is about 28 million, and 52+ million with keys, which is decent. And I have never done more than a few resurrections in a single run. Honestly, once the game starts asking me for 16, 32 or 64 keys for a restart, I would rather just ditch the run.

I know what you mean about old school playing, though. I frequently challenge myself to do stuff and push my skills.

I have, for instance, created a homemade challenge like deciding to not use a single hover board for a million points. The highest I have ever forced myself to go without a single hoverboard was five million. That was NO easy task, I can tell you. I engaged my first hoverboard on that run at just over 5 mill. :)

First, please, please, PLEASE don't go anywhere, and continue to post on TA. I was worried about how the "tone" of my post would come across, and you have no idea how refreshing it is to have another adult to talk to on TA...;):D

There's a bunch of good people on TA, but it seems like every other day a flame war begins with two people having different feelings about something in a game(I KNOW, right? SHOCKING.:D).

That said, you actually made a really good point, and I'm not sure Jeppe or any of the players posting even considered it. It would seem logical to have the option of paying for whatever with Keys or Coins. I guess we were just moaning about what to do with all the frickin' Keys (Jeppe is so patient:eek::)), and it seemed like a good idea at the time.

That said, Jeppe reads these posts pretty regularly, and if there's one thing you can say for Kiloo, they're far more interested in happy players than making an extra 3 bucks off someone. I guess we'll see what happens down the tracks... (Yes, I did.:p)

As for playing styles, again I want to thank you for reacting favorably to my comment. It's just that, playing styles. I don't begrudge anyone squeezing enjoyment out of life in any way they choose, but for me, I guess I just enjoy running until I die (in video games anyway;)), no Keys, no HBs, just me and my rickety old reflexes... ;):D

    Cheers,

Drummerboycroy, there was nothing even remotely offensive about your original post to me. You explained, quite nicely, why Kiloo created the keys for outfits policy.

In truth, it never even occurred to me that the majority of the fans on a message forum like this might have objected, on old-school grounds, to the idea of keys in the first place, and when I first saw that the game was basically asking me for 55 keys for two outfits on a character I would never use in the first place, I was shocked and thought, "lol Nothing doing!" But that was months ago, before I ever even posted on this forum.

So, wow, you don't even use hoverboards?

Of late, I have been trying not to use them as much, because they are easy to rely on, particularly in my case, since the only board I EVER use is the bouncer. But I have been able to get 5 million points (showing on a run) without the use of a hoverboard, which I guess would amount to about 8 million total, since I am very good at collecting coins in the game.

Truth be told, while I like to push myself, I do find that the boards add an extra dimension to the game. Particularly if I am tired. Ever notice sometimes you just can't get a good rhythm going in this game? Other times, I am unstoppable, and there isn't a complex sequence of trains, barriers, and other objects I can't navigate without sneakers or boards.

    Edit: Oh great!! [/sarcasm]

Okay, you inspired me to do a no hoverboard, no keys, no score booster run. I had one challenge left in a set when starting the run, which was "Roll 400 Times." I think I had like 100 rolls left, which I did in short order, took less than 200K points to do, and what challenge set comes up? The one that includes "Use 30 Hoverboards," and, of course, "Use 8 Hoverboards Without Crashing!" So I guess my little run without boards will have to wait a bit. lol Or do you consider it all right to use boards and still be old school, IF there is a challenge or two up that demand you use them? :p

Ah HAH! You've just taken the first step toward being an annoying "purist video gamer!":p;):D

I most definitely use HBs when missions call for them :)p). The only missions I buy off are the Key ones, because I'm lucky to see 1 Key in 3-4 million worth of surfing.;):D

Oh, and the rhythm comment? I don't know if you've ever downhill skied or surfed, but I have actually gotten into SS grooves that have induced similar feelings/sensations...

Yeah, I hear you. The game, when you really start to focus on it and get into a rhythm, can become very Zen-like.

Man, I honestly wish I could record gameplay footage on my iPad. I would LOVE to record a marathon run and toss it into Sony Vegas Moviemaker and add audio commentary to create a video walkthrough.

Anyway, lol I am off topic now.

And FYI, I am already annoying, but I seriously doubt I will ever become a purist, at least not in the traditional Subway Surfer way that some of the people in this thread are referring to. In all honestly, calling one's self a purist is completely subjective anyway, because where do you draw the line? Who is to decide what constitutes "purist behavior" and who is just a n00b abusing things like keys and boards?

Personally, I believe that Kiloo put boards into the game because they, as a developer, intended for them to be used. lol Duh, right?

Then I believe they put keys in the game for the same reason. I spent some time today reading all hundred+ pages of this thread and have come to the irrefutable conclusion that all the people getting snooty about boards and keys are full of shit with way to much time on your hands to worry about how other people play a game!

(Says the guy who scored 52+ million this week!)

Seriously, I kid. In reality, though, I noticed that some people here make disparaging comments about the use of keys and boards, and I don't get it. This is particularly true of players like myself who can do upwards of over 5 million without a single key or board. I guess my point is that if you are relying on boards and keys to score your first million, and coming on here bragging about it, you need a reality check. But if you (and I suspect you can easily score a mill and much more) can negotiate any sequence that this game throws at you without keys or boards and pretty much the ONLY TIME you will die is because your hand accidentally zigged when it should have zagged or you lost concentration because the hot girl you just met is texting you, then you have paid your dues and keys and boards are just FUN.

In short, in my admittedly subjective view about SS purism, while I use keys and boards when I want to, and have used over a hundred boards each in several 40+ million runs, I am still a purist because I am good enough at this game where now it's just fun to see how high I can go by spamming boards and using a couple of key-restarts. :)

By the way, Kiloo was VERY SMART with boards and keys. Because the boards do not make you invulnerable! You want to know something? I have crashed MORE TIMES after my board runs out and during the refractory period than I ever do when on a board! This is an important distinction, because I believe that in some ways, you are more vulnerable to crashes after a crash with a board AND after a board expires. As for keys, they come with a price. The cost doubles with every resurrection! So you are always presented with a decision: Do I want to spend 32 keys on this run when all I have is five million points, but my rhythm is off and I crashed inexplicably, five times in the last million points?"

In my 52+ million point run, for example, I used my FIRST KEY at 20 million. Not too shabby! But for inexplicable reasons, I used my second resurrection a million later and my third after a few more million. So now I am sitting on a 20 million points score and am presented with the choice: Spend a whopping EIGHT keys to keep going?

In this case, I did. But then at about 35 million, I also played like crap for a while, and now the game is asking me for 32 keys for the restart.

So I bailed on the run and accepted what ended up being 52 million.

Sorry about the long post, but I wanted to really get into detail. :)

Since we still have about a week span left of the current hunt, I believe it's a little early to expect a new one.

I think they did it so random people in the internet would freak out about the "late" update and ask them why they chose to put in an extra challenge. :p

Who knows? Maybe they thought it would be cool to have an extra couple weeks in NO?

It’s correct that the New Orleans update is out for a little longer than the previous ones.
We are super busy planning Subway Surfers in 2014 and needed a little extra time fleshing out features for the new year.
The next update will be around shortly, and I’m happy to announce that we have a very exciting future planned for Jake and the rest of the gang.

    In order:

Different?: Yes, I find it much more enjoyable, relaxing, and "fairly" challenging than any other runner I've played. Put it this way, I generally do not even enjoy runners, SS has been on my device since day one, and I play it daily.

Updated?: Bizarrely frequently, like once a month on average, with new content, limited stuff, characters, LOCALES, etc.

Limited items?: Yes, plenty, but nothing you need to worry about. There are limited characters, boards, stuff like that. The stuff you might actually need is all there to purchase (with IN-GAME funds) all the time.

Grindage?: Honestly, it depends on who you ask. If I told you how much coinage I've got from playing very little on a semi-regular basis, you'd choke. I've heard more than a few compare SS unfavorably to titles like Agent Dash, which is a joke to me.

To compare two titles I've got some experience with, Agent Dash and SS:

AD asks you to pay to EQUIP EACH power-up EACH TIME you use them.
SS has the power-ups scattered amongst the field. Once you pay to unlock them, that is IT.

AD ties your multiplier to BUYING THINGS like SKINS.
SS ties your multiplier to OBJECTIVES.

AD has painfully slow coin pick-ups, and remember, you'll NEED the coins to buy power-ups over and over and over and over...
SS brings you a much greater average per meter run, and that's BEFORE the coin multiplier.

AD ramps up the difficulty so ridiculously fast that by the time you start seeing "Supergems" you're not likely to live long enough to collect any.
SS ramps up at a much slower pace, and then "levels out," allowing you to actually enjoy what you're doing...

It's all opinion, mind you, but for me, nothing touches SS on all fronts.

YMMV, but for me, there is none better runner... ;):D

Mine is the same as here. ;)

Oh, almost forgot, AD? No bonus for friends playing. SS? Bonus for friends playing. Add me, and go into the "Friends" tab. You'll see my "play count" rising as the days go by. When I hit 50 runs... BONUS. :D

Edit: One more thing, AD, no objectives. SS? TONS of VERY addictive objectives. Daily, weekly, monthly, special limited, long-term... yeah, syrupy goodness...

I've said it before, I'll say it again, nobody is better at FTP than Kiloo...
