Getting beat up too much from Cammy today. I keep on falling for the same tricks and I just laugh at it. 4-11 against Snooper. I guess we could call those 2 sets for first to 5 and one last winner takes all that I ended up losing on too. :D Time to rage away on ranked now.

If that was scrub mode, then I don't stand a chance at all.

Nice annihilation of my Abel & co., Snooper, but the Yun stuff pissed me off. I don't want your Yun pity. If I hit rematch I expect you to keep the gloves off. I was almost blind with salty rage. When you started doing well with Yun I wanted to break something.

Playing against you and apprunner today just confirm my deep, seething hate of cammy. My new policy is to get some hours in with Zangief and then counterpick everyone who uses cammy until Adon comes out.

I seriously need to take some anger management classes or something. I was all zen-like today before all this cammy hate.

I DEFINITELY agree. I REALLY wish they'd put online MP in for KoF and SF2 Collection because I think those would be really fantastic online games, especially KoF.

That's the best way to go. You can only get better to a certain point playing random people because then it becomes about gimmicks. If you're playing a steady group of people on a regular basis, you get used to their tactics and they get used to yours and as a result, everyone learns. It's why we have so many great players here at TA!

Haha fair enough. Gotta say, yun-gief is ridiculous, absoloutley ridiculous. I hate that match soooo bad. And if you want to counter pick cammy then i suggest balrog. Ive got a fair bit of experience against guile but I harldy play tenonez and hes the only decent balrog around. Cammy-gief is pretty even imo.

Edit:Cammy-Abel is a stupid, stupid match. Not much abel can do really. Sooooo many whiffed command grabs by you though haha.

    Second this. :p

Going into ranked is like nothing now after facing these Cammy marathons.

Nullroar, want to beat me down now so at least one of us feels better? :D

As a game developer who has worked on all sorts of games previously, I thought I would hijack this thread.

Please PM me if you feel there is actually room for more beat'em'ups on the iOS platform. Our biz guy tells us that there's only interest in street fighter, and any new games won't get supported by the gaming community.

So feel free to PM with the following:

    - what you'd like to see in an iOS fighter
    - what is the most important thing for you
    - paid or iAP / free?

    Thanks!

I think if I had faced against squall2002's Sagat, slrc91's Guile, or Vaceotyn's Viper, I think it would have ended up the same way haha. ;)

On another note, it takes 2,000 TP now to get level up and get an extra member...

Yeah but we've got a few spots open if you account for the randoms. They fill up as fast as Snooper can boot them.

I was just thinking that if we could level up enough, we could all be back into 1 team.

We would need at least 10 more slots though, so AT LEAST 20,000 TP..... who knows how much TP it will take to level up later on.

I know SimianSquared wanted PMs, but I think it's also valuable for us to hear each others' thoughts as well.

It's certainly not easy to break in to the 2D/3D fight game community easily. You can draw parallels to the early 90's 2D fighter influx, with SF2 being a smash, and clones and competitors to follow. I feel like SF2 came along at a very specific time, while arcades were thriving (think back to the slew of CPS-1 and CPS-2 games out at the time, plus the x-men arcade game), and home consoles were still 8-bit. I can think of bunches of competitors -- Mortal Kombat, Fighter's History, World Heroes, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Kizuna Encounters, Guilty Gear, Power Instinct, Samurai Shodown, Time Killers -- and I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty of others.

I think one of the reasons SF4 on the iOS has been successful, is a combination of brand recognition (who hasn't heard of a Hadouken? all my coworkers had played SF2 at some point in highschool/univ), an existing SF4 console/arcade scene (and with it, enough online sources to get new players up to speed with videos, strategy guides; in addition, all the gameplay tweaks that had been made to its console counterparts), and yes, something that translated well to the touchscreen.

I played SF2, SF3, a bunch of the "vs" series, King of FIghters, but not SF4, aside from the training room on SF4 for the PC. When I initially picked up SF4 for the iOS, I thought "eh, it's interesting, it's neat that I can do fireballs with the touch of a single button, the computer's kinda neat to beat up, but ok, oo new other shiny game.". But I also found that "oo, there's bluetooth! this could be neat" and got a coworker to "find a copy" <ahem>. He had also grown up with SF, but the last one he played was SF2 in the arcades. But oh, every day we spent easily an hour playing -- my beating him senseless using random characters. But eventually it got to a point where he started seeing tactics, spacing, understanding recovery frames, hit priorities, and the matches started to even out. Another coworker then decided to buy this game as well, having NEVER played a single fighting game, ever.

This was right before Volt game out. Before Volt was released, I wasn't on these forums at all. I don't know if there was a strong community pre-Volt here. But Volt changed all that, with Game Center, and the ability to play random people online. Initially I wasn't thrilled with the online mode, having to wait 5-6 minutes for a match to be found. It was actually a bit dreadful, and connections getting dropped all the time. We managed to get another 2 coworkers purchasing/playing SF4V at this point.

At some point, I can't quite figure out when, SF4V established critical mass. Online matches were plentiful, connection issues weren't as bad, a lot less disconnections. I want to say that maybe it was after the 1.01 or 1.02 update, since that addressed the disconnections, and they had a big 99 cent sale that ran for almost a week.

And all the while, they were tweaking SF4V with character balance, so that your favourite characters wouldn't be absolutely worthless.

Summary - I think the existing community for SF4 console/scene was very important, but the company continued support and willingness to address customer complaints also won them tremendous amounts of loyal fans.

There's room for other fighters, but they would need tremendous polish. It would be akin to launching a new fighting game in the 90's heyday. Storylines, distinct characters & style, smooth balanced fighting engine + system, where at it's core you're almost dealing with A beats B beats C beats A, in the way that the SF engine works -- it's a guessing game, but if you play enough, you can start reading your opponent, like knowing you've bested someone at poker.

And, whereas in the arcade days, everyone would know about a game and be able to play it (and by virtue of being at an arcade, having head-to-head gameplay), you no longer have that luxury on the iOS, unless you have online play. Bluetooth is good, but not everyone is surrounded by fellow iOS users. Online wifi MP is crucial.

If Guilty Gear were out today, I imagine maybe 1/3 of the players here would play it. Mortal Kombat, maybe 1/5~1/10th. King of Fighters is out, but only 1/3 of the players here have played it, and it's still lacking online MP. Super Smash Brothers, maybe 1/4. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, possibly 1/2 the ppl here? Likewise Tekken vs Capcom and Capcom vs Tekken.

Soulcaliber came out, but without multiplayer, I don't see it getting much traction. Not to mention that it's a very dated game, with a very dated engine (compared to the subsequent soulcalibers). It's also missing that tactical gameplay element, and that's where the term "mashy" comes in, I think. You don't feel like there's a lot of skill involved.

    -----------------

OK, so for the TL:DR statement - yes, but you better bring online multiplayer and a hell of a lot of polish, balance, support, and possibly catch lightning in a bottle.

    What a terrible idea.

Seriously though, I dont have much trouble against most guiles, its the ones who are good at anti airing without flashkick that give me trouble, it just seems like theres nothing you can do. Its probably not as bad as 7-3, obviously im biased, but its still in guiles favour. Seriously though I think if you want to counter pick cammy balrog is the way to go, theres no good balrogs AT ALL besides tenonez so I have no clue what to do in that match, plus its considered really bad for cammy even on consoles where balrog is popular and cammy players would have experience against him. Pre update honda also wrecked cammy.

I believe if you can make a good port, there's always plenty of room for more fighter games as the really good ones out currently are only SF4 volt and KOF.

Have you heard about Samurai Shodown, a Neo Geo game back in the 90s?

SS2 in particular was a classic, with not much fanciful moves but depending on the precision and skills of yourself, you can win a match easily as the heavy slash does a lot of damage. SS3 onwards I consider as crap as they tried to make the game too fanciful with lots of specials so that it became a case of {power-up} > Special kinda game.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samurai_Shodown_II

    Wiki:
Samurai Shodown II was even better-received than the original and is commonly regarded as one of SNK's finest games ever produced. It also made GameSpot's list of The Greatest Games of All Time and EGM's List of Top Ten Cult Classics. At Game Rankings, it holds the overall rating at 92.50%.
