Actually Doc, I disagree on the BP. You can tell who can legitimately get there BP to 4k and a couple Makotos have gotten there. I have never seen a legit Cody there at that level. He has too many bad matchups (like Cammy) :D

Having one the best Ultras isn't as big a deal if there's a good chance you may not be able to get in close enough to use it.

I do agree her dash is possibly the best in the game but it compensates for her slow foot speed and is necessary for her to be able to take advantage of knockdowns.

The reliance on normals is because she's a Third Strike character and that game is all about normals because most of the game is played up close.

I think BP says more about the player than the character. A good player can make a bad character seem good (again, look at Nashberry) Cody's just one of the less popular characters in the game so of course you aren't going to see as many people reaching 4k.

Break it down though. Look at the moves Cody has to deal with certain play styles vs what Makoto has. Vs zoners alone, those matchups are easier with Cody because of Bad Stone, Zonk, and EX slide kick. What does Makoto have that a good Sagat player cant roll all over?

I disagree that makoto has one of the best ultras. The judge of a good ultra should be its usefulness above all else, and makoto's is not that useful. It has short reach, doesn't move her at all, is difficult to time as an AA, and loses to most other ultras when it's done right after or right before them. The only real uses for her AA are in a super-ultra combo (which is awesome but unavailable for the first round usually), and as an unreliable AA.

Compare it to Ryu's ultra, which does less damage and is slower. I would say Ryu's is better because it is much more useful. You can combo into it tons of different ways, it works as a (worse) AA, it's a good response to an opponent's ultra or other move.

Or Vega's. His ultra is one of the best in the game in my opinion, because it has so many good uses. It's fast, reaches full screen, is an excellent AA, and beats most ultras when done right after, and several ultras when done right before. (Makoto's :3) Its limited combo potential is a weak point, but it doesn't require ANY super meter to do it.

Makoto's ultra is a pretty good 'panic' ultra with invincibility at startup. Because it's a hit and very fast, it 'catches' people like Zangief's can has the added bonus of easy combos into it. Just mash that Tsurugi and mash ultra when it hits on the ground. Easy! And 510 damage too!

Also, she is the only character that can do command grab into raw ultra.

It also has great recovery afterwards so you can fit in about 23658034608347 dashes. Compared to Vega where you don't even have time to jump in after and the distance is terrible/

I do think vega has a very good ultra too. I have a feeling his ultra in Volt was based on pre AE 2012 changes, where it was a slightly faster.

Yeah, I think Makoto is actually pretty strong, but because of her normal reliance...

    >:) ZANGIEF!

I think her crouching hard kick is a little strong though...

Great Anti-Air, great range, great damage.

It's like a one hit of Sagat's standing kick.

Topic now onto who is better between Makoto and Cody?

I think their level are pretty equivalent, personally I find Nash's Cody harder to beat than his Makoto... Reason might be that I'm pretty aggressive and Makoto has less wake up options, while ex zonk knuckle kills a lot of things!

But when it comes to a typical kiting projectile throwing Volt strategy, then Cody is gonna have a tough time... Those Akuma or Dhalsim and more, can pretty much keep Cody out easily and watch him slowly trying to catch up, then easily swap positions with a demon flip or teleport behind...

Makoto vs Dhalsim? Predict a teleport and dash up grab into ultra FTW.
Makoto vs Akuma? A bit trickier, but her dashes and her axe kick which destroys Akuma's ultra makes her time not so tough. I believe she can bait out an ultra with dem!

Conclusion, I think it is match up dependent. If this is on the typical US Volt environment, then Cody is gonna have a tougher life

The fact that Cody has a projectile at all helps. It may not be a great projectile but every little bit helps. Akuma and Sim can keep Guile out too. It's just how they play.

Can Cody catch Sims limbs with Tornado upper?

I don't really play much Volt anymore but add me. My GCID is the same as my name here.

with perfect distance and timing you can catch his limbs with what ever attack you have, even crouching jabs. To constantly counter-poke Dhalsim's limb is just unrealistic in a real match... Unless you can predict moves like how Daigo catches Dhalsims with an crHP xx Super

when I play Dhalsim vs CPU Cody they can constantly out-poke me with his jaw crusher which has a perfect hit-box to deal with Yoga snipes... but actually using it in a real match is a different story :p

When you add me on GC make sure you mention that you're from TA otherwise I will just ignore it as random spam requests...

unfortunately I don't play Volt as much now, main reason: switching to a different game called League of Legends. :p

Can't give you frequent matches but a short set every once awhile is fine.

relying on focus a bit too much... I know it is after all the fastest focus in the game but don't use it to AA all the time. Put on more pressure other than throwing. Her axe-kick is excellent when people think they are gonna get thrown and tries to dash or jump, use it more. crLK after Hayate on hit is a frame trap people can't jump away, mix that with throws and you'll be putting on quite some pressure

at the end I was just pretty much cornering you by mashing armor break or 2 hits special moves! Don't abuse Makoto's focus!

BTW I saved the first Sakura rep, I love her corner game so much :D hell she is so much fun but lamers and lag kill this character! :(

Thanks for the tips man, I'll keep that in mind. I don't like to continue the pressure too much since most of the time I lose because of a mashed SRK/Ultra so I'm trying to play safer, but it seems that due to Makoto's poor defense options I can't rely on that too much.
Lamers and lag kills the game, not only one character.

It's more feasible to catch Sims limbs (I love those two words together!) when you have the jab versions of people's SRKs. I can do it consistently with Oni's jab SRK on AE. I think catching him like that with Cody would require some real good reads and require you to really quickly download your opponent's combos.

Criminal Upper has a huuuge amount of active frames.

The other way to catch sim limbs is to stand at just outside max range and use your best low range poke, so in Cody's case you can use cr.MP or cr.MK
