Tim Cook, curing COO of Apple, will take over as CEO.

As expected, Steve Jobs will continue to work closely with Apple:

It might be worth checking out Apple's stock, it will most likely drop dramatically.

This is terrible news. Hope he is just focused on recovering from his health issues.

This is indeed terrible news. It will be interesting how the future of Apple without Steve will be like.

But for the great changes, thank you Steve Jobs! I hope he's doing well. :(:(

    What the hell?..

Honestly, in modern times, Apple has been nothing without Steve Jobs who's always been at the forefront of running the company and advertising Apple's products. Really hoping Apple's direction doesn't change from here on out. He played such a key role in getting the company out of the dumps. Going to miss him as CEO. People actually know who this man is, unlike Nintendo, or Sony, etc. Sure as hell not one of my friends know who they are, but everyone here knows Steve Jobs. Even I don't know who the freaking CEOs of those companies are after years of playing their consoles. But yeah :[. Going to miss his black turtleneck, cheap jeans, and old New Balances as well. Who the hell is going to step in his shoes for the upcoming keynote? He always cared a lot about aesthetics, but hey, what other company can get a large proportion of their customers to upgrade every single device they own annually?

Well he's still with the company, just not the CEO. I believe he just needed to switch duties to something that is more forgiving on his health.

See what I did there? kk.

Yeah, we'll see how things turn out. Hoping he still plays a big part in Apple and the best of luck with his health.

Guess filing all those frivolous lawsuits to stifle competition took its toll.

I hope this press release doesn't mean the subtle confimation that he is on his way out in life...

This is very sad to me. I believe that there are many geniuses in the world at any time but few visionaries. In a very short time, Apple was able to go from a failing niche computer manufacturer to the custodians of a completely vertical content creation and distribution model. They own the machines and software the creates the software and the appliances to consume it. They've developed many of the conventions we use in modern computing and has really in my eyes created the current mobile industry and I really do feel that was his vision.

I won't be surprised to see stock plummet. More then any industry, tech is viewed as being a "1 man show". Maybe it has to do with the age of the industry. Maybe it has to do with the fact that not many technology companies outlive their founders. While I agree there is no good reason to sell Apple stock just yet because of this, the perception of the loss of value and direction in the stock market will be huge.

You guys are aware that Tim Cook has basically been at the helm since 2009, and has been running the show on and off since 2004, right? Believe it or not, as far as the direction of the company and quality of their products are concerned this transition will be seamless once everyone gets bored of being reactionary and dumping their stock.

Stocks dropped 6.69% last time I checked.
Now it's back up to -5.10%.

    That's a big drop!

Most people suspect Steve Jobs has what is probably some terminal form of cancer, but of course that has never been confirmed. He has a serious, never officially disclosed, health issue that he seems to have been battling for a few years now. That's obvious. Whether it's cureable or not I suppose is up for debate. I would lean on the side of not, myself. His role in the company has been diminished for a while now.

Unless his health gets in the way, I would guess that he'd still lead press conferences. CEO or not, Jobs is still the face of Apple.

A sad, sad day. :( Best wishes in a speedy recovery Steve. I'll miss seeing your baggy blue jeans and your legendary turtleneck.
