I've been a games/interactive programmer for 15+ years. This time I wanted to make a solo game and try my hand at some artwork and generally see if I could go from nothing to shipping a whole game. I worked part-time on this game for nearly the last 3 years. The controls are simple. Tap and hold extends the foot further and release to stop. On release switches feet. The goal is to see how far up the river you can make it while trying to balance on lily-pads, dodge wildlife etc. Everything is physics based. The game has a few inspirations. First, the OG Crossy Road with the look, feel, and general menu flow. I feel like they found a good balance with microtransactions/ads that were not too annoying. Then Steppy Pants for the gameplay. The big addition with Step Safari is that you don't just walk on a flat surface, instead you stand on moving obstacles, floating lily pads, waterfalls etc that all have physics and buoyancy. One of the key suggestions I received early on in feedback was that the player should always have a second chance to scramble and make it to safety so unlike Steppy Pants there is no instant game over trigger. But make no mistake this is not an easy game to master. Reminds me a bit of the old Steppy Pants game (Edit: I see you mentioned it as an inspiration right in the description). Fun for a high score challenge. Just a note about the waterfall: I thought it was a bug because I couldn’t seem to climb up it. But after trying a few things, I found that you have to make small and quick steps to get up to the top. Having lots of fun with someone on X, going back-and-forth bragging about our newest records. Step Safari starts out impossibly difficult then gets more challenging. At first I could’t put one foot in front of another. Eventually it clicked with each tap alternating feet. Can almost run along now. High score 61. Never played Steppy Pants so this is a new concept. Artwork is brilliant I think, especially the water with its reflections and light refraction effects of fish beneath the surface. Great to see the original theme of wading birds, though it’s a mystery why the seagull can’t swim. Locodolo likes this. I almost always get knocked off. There’s gotta be a strategy. I’ve tried waiting, but it’s too far off the screen to see where it’s pointing. High score is 71, going for 75 to beat my competitor. Stronsay Well-Known Member Aug 6, 2015 987 229 43 #6 Stronsay, Aug 4, 2024 It’s possible to wait on the small rock at step 36. The waterspout can be seen well enough from there to time a jump past it. I actually figured it out just a few minutes ago. I recorded my high score run if anyone wants to see how the game plays. Current high of 75. Really interesting game once you get the hang of it with clever use of physics. Locodolo and Anotherkellydown like this. Locodolo Member Aug 3, 2024 5 16 3 #9 Locodolo, Aug 5, 2024 Great to hear that you are all enjoying it! I've only really had a handful of friends and family test the game along the way. Skipped soft launching and went straight for a hard launch so wasn't really sure of how the game was going to be received. Though Apple did give the game a bit of a feature in some regions which was cool. Balancing the difficulty was tricky since I have played the game for so long I started to second guess how easy or hard the game was. I preferred to err on the side of a more difficult game. There are some pretty difficult obstacles later on. It's been cool and interesting to watch videos of play throughs pop up on YouTube. Oh and a tip for the water spout if you are struggling you can switch your device into landscape mode and play the game in landscape which gives a little more visibility along the path. As for the seagull - skipped swimming lessons haha Anotherkellydown, Stronsay, Samuel Dodee and 1 other person like this. elcrazy Well-Known Member Sep 19, 2017 690 535 93 #10 elcrazy, Aug 5, 2024 Ok finally picked this up and gave it a go. Wish there was a way to buy a permanent one time continue without ads. Challenging enough that it’s too tempting to want another chance from those checkpoints but those ads can be long. (And hate ads in general, of course, lol) elcrazy likes this. elcrazy Well-Known Member Sep 19, 2017 690 535 93 #12 elcrazy, Aug 5, 2024 Agree with all of this. I thought there was one and kept searching the app. I will buy a no adds instantly if added. Locodolo Member Aug 3, 2024 5 16 3 #13 Locodolo, Aug 5, 2024 @elcrazy Thanks! Yep at 82 there are still lots of new obstacles to discover. Yeah I agree Ads are not fun so I have tried to mainly make them opt in rewarded. There are some very, very occasional ones that will pop up after a game but any IAP purchase turns them off. I think that's a cool idea to have a way to buy a permanent one-time continue as indeed ads are long and can ruin the flow. I will work something out.
