Yes they do. Actually I was just about to comment on it.

This game takes wonderful cues from Elite Dangerous -- smart move dream studios, very smart.

    Example (This answers your question)
I'm in the first Starbase we get acquainted with "Memphis". On the missions board (We have two side mission slots by the way - so only allowed to take on two side missions) Not sure if that's per Starbase or in general.

Anyways, one of the missions have great rewards up in the 2000 credits and 800xp. It's a transport mission of two passengers to another star system.

It won't let me accept the mission unless I "add" a cabin with space for two passengers. (I don't have that so can't take the mission) There's another mission where I have to transport a wounded - but I can't take that unless I have a medivac equipped. As you can see... certain missions require stuff (probably for the other classes) So you can grow your ship this way.

    SIDENOTE:
Side missions (from what I've experienced) are not simple static read ups. They are voice acted, which really adds to the whole "I'm really living this" sensation. Keeps it colorful. Don't know how often the dialogue will be repeated, but it's voice acted and that's good enough for me. Looks like they took cues from The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt -- side missions having just as much liveliness to them like the main quest. Good Job Devs. You hear that? It's me giving you that slow bravo applaud.

OTHER WAYS of growing your ship is Elite Dangerous style...

You can buy equipment to upgrade your:
    Energy
    Recharge
    Shields
    Weaponary
    Utility Gadgets
    Cargo

Each one of those categories have one or two slots you can tinker around with. Yes you can buy other ships. Bigger I think as well.

Then to top it off, the RPG elements. Each class has their own specialty move. From what I see it's two versions of them. One stronger than the other. Each unlocks when you reach a certain rank.

The dogfights are good. Really good. Some "sluggishness" to the control of your ship in the beginning because you have to update those attributes (like an RPG) That said, when you get better ships they too will have their own modified attributes that will make them better in certain areas.

Speaking of attributes, that's why you gain XP and add points into the following strengths:

    Handling
    Speed
    Shields
    Recharge
    Armor (hull I suppose)
    Energy

3D map like Elite - but you can only move it left and right. (Why DEV, why not full 3D rotation?) You can also tap on the different planets and see their economy what they specialize in. But not as indepth as I may be making it out when I type it. But indepth enough for the what this game is offering.

Ok back to playing for me so I can answer more later.
Overall, think Elite Dangerous with RPG elements. But... no ship roll :(

(Aside from that it's good) graphics are good too. For a $5 game? Graphics is bangin!

This game would had been GODLIKE if we could have had proper roll. So I can fly alongside an asteroid and caress my ship around it as pirates chase me. I'll be playing with them.

DEVS, if you're reading, how much must I pay you to add roll and different degrees of maneuverability in here? How much? I'll pay.

@odi0n: in the upcoming games thread you said minimum iOS was 6 (well, your exact words were "it should work from 6 onwards"), but it's been published with minimum iOS 8+. Pity, I have 7.1.2, so I'm out :(

I said iOS 6? What are you referring to? I never said that. If I did please show me so I can fix that. I am running this game on my "iPhone 6" I don't recall saying anything about iOS 6. Unless I typo meaning my iPhone 6.

But yea, this is a grand of a game. You gotta update for this one. This is a premium game at $5. A steal for what it brings to the table.

Ages since I've played that game. What I can say because I've played these recently.

Think Strike Suit Zero (without the gundamn aspect) and without rolling.

The combat is around there and I'm catching some Darkstar One Broken Alliance combat (again without rolling). Even has the little aim dot that stays ahead of the enemy and shifts it's rotation depending the movements of the enemy.

Speaking for cockpit view. The AI will try to out maneuver you, flank, (don't know if it's because I'm at low rank and my handling still sluggish in my attributes) but these bastards will dance around you, hit a nice turns while you're chasing. They are sly. At least at my low rank.

Keep in mind, this game you can't come to a full stop. You can slow down by pressing the deceleration button If you hold it down you start moving backwards by 18m the max in speed.

Can anyone confirm the cockpit view? Immersion is a must for me in these exploration type games. Thanks!

Yes. Different ships have different cockpits "fairly detailed" as the dev has mentioned.

I play exclusively in cockpit. I can tell you the dogfights are intense and fun. Especially in the beginning when you're low rank. This is a RPG so you have to boost your attributes.

    Ship handling
    Speed

And more. I say that to say this... it will feel sluggish in the beginning as if, the controls were not well designed (it's not that bad) but you will acknowledge the sluggishness of the ship handling, etc. but that's only because those attributes have to be built up like any RPG character. For more indepth read my long lost in this page.

Now that you know what's up, don't expect yourself to be call of dutying in here just body bagging foes left and right. You will get your ass handed to you a lot in the beginning.

I think I'm having some trouble getting gates and docks to activate. Just flying into the station until I bump into it, none of my buttons change context. Is it a bug or is there some kinda "unfinished business" thing with side missions preventing me from progressing? Eg: Can't dock at Dysons to meet that first transport pilot.

From what I've experienced this has nothing to do with side missions. I docked just fine to meet up with her. You may want try shutting down app. The icon is supposed to pop up. Weird. The game autosaves your progress. You'll most likely start back up when you enter dyson space. Since that's a save point.

I did have the game crash on me once. So, you know, typical bugs. They'll probably field them all and patch it. I'm hoping for your sake, it's not a bug and just a one time occurrence.

    UPDATE:
Just discovered something. Same thing was happening to me, turned out, I had to tap on the mission icon and make sure it's [brackets] are expanded not shrunk in like a box. Once the destination is activated this way - your contextual icon will pop up that grants you interaction.

CANT VENTURE OFF FROM MAIN QUEST?
There is no way (I think) you can leave it alone and go do your own thing. I was at Dyson. Anderson wanted me to check some nav points as soon as I launched. I totally ignored him and jumped to the next system. Soon as it loaded, I got a message from Anderson saying he needs to find someone more reliable and then just like that - the game was over.

It then started me at the new star system I went to. Now I'm on my way back to Dyson to see if I can reopen the main mission. Not because I want to, but to bug test and see if it's available after Anderson essentially killed me the last time for ignoring his nav checks.

Hope we can venture away from the main quest. If not, we're doomed. Since Anderson bought us the ship, probably rigged to explode (auto death) every time we venture off his guided path.

    SWITCHING vs. BUYING:
Why is switching to an item cheaper than outright buying it? Why buy Super Titan Armor for 3000cr when I can switch to it for 1200cr. Therefore, why buy when I can switch to it for less than half the cost. Is this a bug? Lol. Or am I misunderstanding something?

You're right, sorry, I made a mistake with the user :( it was c0mas. Check the image attached. That "0" in the nickname was my mistake :p in any case, can't update atm, so I'll have to stick without this one unless they publish an update with iOS 7 compatibility (but I guess that won't happen... :()

Big sci-fi fan here. Lately I've been really into space movies again and then I started transferring that interest over into the game world.
Recently dived into Star Citizen on PC and loved Galaxy on Fire 2, so this game couldn't arrive at a better time for me personally.
Even today Crashlands is *still* eating all my iOS gaming time, but I am putting this on my wishlist and really looking forward to a gameplay video from the usual suspects here.
But from what I've read here so far from you guys really got me excited! :D

Some quick beginner tid bits for cockpit view players:

    SHOOTING AIM:
As long as you keep the enemy "aim trail" that star aiming thing in the big circle of your hud - your shots will hit them.

If for some reason, you're shooting at an enemy but don't see that "aim trail" then that means he is not highlighted into your aim. Make it so (couldn't resist) by clicking on them. You can tell whom you are aiming at or (interacting with) if the [brackets] around them are wide open. This pertains to stations, jump gates, escorts... etc.

USE THE FRIENDLY AI TO AID YOU DURING DOGFIGHTS:
Use the AI security force in the beginning. Have your enemies chase you into a group of good AI so they can help you finish them off. You'll still get the experience points. In the beginning this game is no joke - it will chew you up and spit you out in bubbles. Before arriving to the enemy trigger destination, scout for a potential place you can have them chase you to. Around floating buildings (usually have security guys) the good AI will be the ones in yellow and blue icons.

BE MINDFUL OF YOUR HULL (GREEN BAR/HEALTH)
If you do not have a repair bot, be mindful of your health. (The green bar). It does not regenerate. Only the shield (blue bar) regenerates. I'm stuck in a transport mission where if my shield gets shredded - I die. No hull. Only a sliver. And I live it that way -- hard as hell. Gotta go into my fights tactfully. So be mindful of your hull. Then again, I do have a squishy fast build because I want to familiarize myself with the flight mechanics. Best way to do this, squishy fast build.

    THE RECHARGE RATE & BATTERY:
These are basically your stamina. The better the battery - the longer the stamina bar (more energy) the better the generator the faster your stamina bar fills up and the faster your stamina bar fills up - the more you can do "consistently" with all the gadgets you have attached to your ship.

Manage them carefully don't want to end up in a scenario where you can't shoot back, shield won't recharge or after burner doesn't recharge quick enough. Don't go all crazy buying the latest greatest tech. They have wattage readings. As long as they all fall under your overall wattage (energy) levels. You'll recharge fairly quickly. However, go over your ships energy capacity by putting in tech that draws a lot - you gonna be swinging without stamina, basically, your going to lose. Balance it out.

HOW TO WANDER OFF FROM THE MAIN QUEST TO RANK UP EARN MINEY TO BUY BIGGER SHIPS:
You do this by clearing out whatever it is the main quest wants you to do for that particular star system you are in. Once Anderson is done and says "hey I'll meet you at whatever star system" then from there you are free to traverse as you'd like. Just don't meet up with him and you should be fine. Because if you try to ignore one of his active missions, the game will insta kill you and you'll be back at the loading screen. Therefore, clear out whatever it is he wants you to do and once he makes it clear you are done with that particular region - then go and have your fun.

This is all I have for now. What a pleasantly deep system this game carries. I am truly impressed. The dogfights are sick. If only ship rolling were here. I swear this game would be GODLIKE. It's close now. The best I've played on mobile. Comes very close to Strike Suit Zero and Darkstar Broken Alliance with Elite Dangerous influences and of course RPG. It's truly a beautiful package.

I was playing a lot of Planar Conquest, XCOM EW & Soul Calibur prior to this. But now this may take the 1 spot, space is my #1 and this game seems to check off all those boxes. Love challenging dog fights with smart maneuvering AI. 3D fighting my number #2 Soul Calibur for life. XCOM & Planar Conquest gonna have to share spots. Lol.

    seriously ?

Are you kidding me ? I am not being offensive here but as you can see its such a messy work done here ......This can even be done by using Microsoft word, all you do is draw 3 tables, then a few dots and some lines connecting each dots. Come on man, show some quality in your professions.
You have no idea how many times I had trusted this developer and yet they still keep doing disappointing work in their game.Even the names of the planets sounds terrible....

SWITCHING vs BUYING is exactly what it says. If you SWITCH a component you effectively sell the current one. That is why the price difference exists.

BUYING allows you to keep the item in the slot and either sell it manually or use it on a new ship that you're buying.

STRAYING FROM MAIN MISSIONS can be done. The only exceptions are the missions that have waypoints or objectives inside the current system. If you have for example a mission that sends you somewhere away, you can do whatever you want until you enter that specific system.

Great game so far, very well made. Sure a few things here and there could be improved and I'm sure they will be with updates, but all in all it rocks.
