Was it during a side view camera sequence or the first intro sequence of the game? In general, you shouldn't have to restart at all at any point, what should happen if you exit / return is just missing stuff and coming back to a moment where Quinn is waiting for you. Could you explain it a bit more, and if it has happened in any other instance of your gameplay? Knowing device and OS would be helpful, too. In STAY you can't control the character, you play as yourself: you can only affect what he does from your dialog choices, let's say you 'trigger' his actions by affecting his overall mood, courage, etc. It also features puzzles, where you as the sidekick of the adventure take direct control in order to solve them (it is the only exception).
