Nice. Starbase Orion is a good game but in part it's fun to see what sort of revolutionary updates just pop up. This developer has come a long way from the old Starbase Command tower defense game.

What is in store next? More Starbase Orion updates?

New game! Tactical, turn-based, hex-based, team-based multiplayer, RvR.

More Starbase Orion updates (they will be spaced out more to free up time to work on the new game).

Eventually I want to port SO to PC; seems a shame not to have it there, where the majority 4X fans live.

If you happen to already be in the SO beta group, then you will get some sneak peeks in the near future.

As for the more general beta test, your best bet is to stay tuned to the SO forums. Much as I love TA, things do tend to get shared there first.

I really like the music in this game. Is a feature in which you can control the music possible?

How is single player in this game? How does the ship combat play? Is it like RTS or is it more like the PC game Gratuitous Space Battles)?

Not sure I understand the question. There is a separate volume control for the music; if you turn it off, you can listen to your own music you play on your device.

There is a review of the latest version of SO on boardgamegeek. It might answer some questions about how the single player is.

As for combat, it is more like Gratuitous Space Battles in that you set orders for your ships, and one round of combat is calculated when the galactic turn advances. Larger combats can span multiple rounds, giving you the chance to modify your orders part way through.

Something that would be a neat addition is if you actually show the structures that you have built on a planet in the picture.

Sorry, after re-reading what I said earlier I could see why you couldn't understand the question. What I meant was maybe some kind of option where you can select a song could be added. I would pay money for this music on iTunes.

Hi. I just started playing. When I explore a solar system I can only see the details of some planets. Some are unclickable. Am I doing something wrong?

Some planets can't be accessed (or colonized), because they can not sustain life - are made up mostly of gas, ect... Like Jupiter.

Hey guys, I'm happy to announce my upcoming new game. Been in development for almost a year now, so go check it out and let me know what you think.

For those that may be wondering, this does NOT mean updates for Starbase Orion will stop. They will become more spread out, however, as I split my time between these two awesome games.

Hello TA! v1.2.3 of Starbase Orion is now live in the AppStore. This makes 23 updates over 2.5 years :D Thanks for helping to make this journey possible!

    Here's a quick summary of what's new:

    • New Technologies to Research
This patch introduces the S.C.I.F. and the Interspecies Medical Network, two new technologies of particular interest to spying or research focused races.

    • Upcoming Tech displayed in the Research Section
Find yourself unsure as to what technologies are coming next when you finish researching that Gauss Turret? Now all you need to do is tap a toggle button and all future technologies will be displayed.

    • New Racial: Robust Techies
Robust Techies can be thought of as the "Natrual Tinkers" trait for research builds; races with this attribute will convert 20% of their planetary research into production.

    • Racial Balance Changes
In v1.2.1 we transitioned over to a new server to provide a better multiplayer experience. One of the advantages to doing so is that I could run analytics against the winning games and see how each of the racial traits were performing. Using this knowledge has helped myself and the SO players to fine tune the current racial attributes to provide a richer strategic experience, opening up new paths to play and stay competitive. The changes are numerous and explained in detail in the Galactic News, but they include changes to Galactic Navigators, Repulsive, Shared Intelligence, Battle Hardened, Free Thinking, Quick Thinkers, Slow as Sloths, Tolerant, Sanctioned Piracy, and Highly Trained Smugglers.

    • More Sorting Options
By popular demand, we have added several new sorting options to the Empire and Galaxy screens. You can now sort by Planet Size, Capacity, Buildings Built, Distance from your Empire, and by specials.

    • Blockade and Combat Changes
Planets which are being blockaded by the enemy, on in systems which have active combat, may no longer purchase production, build ships or starbases. This change makes blockading a more effective tool and opens up new lines of strategic thought.

    • New "Disengage" Combat Command
Joining the "Retreat" command is the newly minted "Disengage" command. Retreat has been here for a while, and its purpose is for a smaller force to escape quickly from combat and rendezvous at the nearest safe haven. Disengage is meant to be used by a larger force who chooses to tactically withdraw from a combat to be ordered elsewhere.

    • Much, much more
Additional changes to Exopolitics, the number of leaders you can hire, returns on scrapping buildings, a new "Tourney24" timer, and more expensive technology when it "rolls over", and more! For the full change log please visit the whipping post on the forums or the "Galactic News" section in game.

    _________________________________________________________

And in case you missed it, there is now a Starbase Orion League organized and run by SO players. Season 3 of the league starts September 1st. If the idea of a friendly 4X space strategy competition with players separated into divisions based on their skill level sound appetizing, make sure to sign up.

Wanted to say I'm blown away by the game, picked it up haLf a year ago and just started to have the time to play it properly. I wish more there were more mobile games that catered to the hardcore 4x audience.

I have two questions for the devs, apologies if they were discussed on the game's actual forum already.

    1. Is there any way/future plans to have the game not zoom out fully during the end turn phases?

    2. Are there any plans to add a notification filter othe galactic events? I realize 80% of them are essential but thee are some, like when spies steal small amounts of galactic credits, that I wish I could disable.

    Thanks

PS: the new sorting options for planets which have or can build a certain building are a great addition, cuts down on no lot of micromanagement.

    Thanks for the kind words!

First time this has been requested! There is currently no option for this, but I'll add it to the whipping post (the Starbase Orion TODO list on our forums) so that it gets looked at in the future.

What we do is try to sort it by priority, so you get the most pertinent sitreps at the top and the least interesting at the bottom (ie you don't need to scroll down to see them if you don't want to). If there are specific sitreps you find unworthy of their current position, you can let me know and I can look into possibly lowering their priority.

Thanks for the reply. The zoom request comes from the fact that I still only play 1v1 games on a small map, and the average AI routinely rushes me and destroys me lol. Since the map's small, there's no advantage to zooming out to the sitrep screen, since I'm only clicking on a max of roughly the same 4 worlds for the first 20 mins of gameplay, and it's a pain having to constantly zoom in on the same sector after every turn.

I'll start checking the whipping post and the SO forum proper, instead of this one, cause I've only dipped my toes into it, and saw there's a breadth of info there. Thanks again.

    Yay! Starbase Orion updated!
    Yay! Naval Tactics released!

Does that mean there is now time to address an earlier response? ;-)

(Seriously, just feel Starbase Command is great fun and really has so much future potential!)

    Thanks for reading! :)

    Yay! Starbase Annex released!

    ( sorry, couldn't resist :D )

In all seriousness, I agree with you; I love Starbase Command! However, its age and levels of revenue combine to make updating it a lack-luster proposition. If I were to consider doing something with it, the best path forward would be making a Starbase Command II, rewritten from scratch in Unity. But I don't see that trumping making Starbase Orion II (another rewrite-from-scratch-in-Unity project).
