Yeah :/ go for a laser rifle. They're pretty unstable, but they're pretty good, admittedly. Laser rifles are pretty much a direct upgrade from assault rifles, but worth the price.
Agreed as well, although I suggest fields to stick to only a few weapon types, and start from the bottom of said type. Using low->high methodry teaches control and restrains aggressivity when you upgrade to a more powerful version. It also teaches skills that will be the basis of your own unique build. Mine, for example, strafes while using high intensity weapons, such to an extent that I'm nearly untouchable, and dish out a lot of dps. I built myself around basics and then bought weapons that resembled said basics. I hope you can learn from this, fields, as it is quite a good way to succeed.
Oh, and grey, it's actually a 12k health difference in the two sets. Not to mention power, gold, exp bonuses as well.

I personally say that laser rifles are a bit more focused, like your assault rifle. The plasma, however, is sort of like it, but it fires slower and has more area. I personally say that you should go for the laser, but Rhys out of preference and lack of experience with plasma.
