Hello there, we are going to release a game that is somewhat similar to Star Control 2's melee mode. You can check out the preview video here: Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel Here is a brief summary of the game: - Unlock 5 different ship classes with different weapons/abilities - Weapons include homing missiles, remote mine detonation, lightning overload shields, teleport and more! - Every ship is different and handles in their own unique way. Feel the weight of large ships and nimbleness of the small fighters implemented with an underlying 2D physics engine! - Challenge computer AI over single player missions/challenges - Challenge your friends over local wifi - Post your high scores onto a global high score board
although it sounds great the melee mode wasnt the thing made star control one of my favorite games it ws the discovering, learning about and interacting with all the different and varied races across a huge star system and managing resources in order to buy new upgrades to reach those places and building up your fleet to deal with all the dangers and adventure that come with embarking upon an epic space expedition. i honestly found the fighting in the game to be the worst part because it was tedious and boring but finding new ships was fun. i too yearn for a game on the idevice that is as great as star control was. galaxy on fire is the closest thing to it for now but the missions are all the same and the game gets kinda boring there arent alot of ships either
I was one of the few people that owned a 3DO Multiplayer console (no, I didn't pay $700 for it...I got it for free from my older bro, who got it for $150, plus a few games). Even though it was originally a computer game, the 3DO version had voice work and a few little upgrades here and there. Enough to call it the best version of the game. And it was, as far as the home console market is concerned, a 3DO exclusive. With that in mind, I'd like to show you all how high I rank SCII among games that gen: FFVII is a great RPG...probably the best on PSone. And that's saying a lot, as PSone was the "go to" console for RPGs of all types that gen. I've played Panzer Dragoon Saga. It's a phenomenal RPG on Saturn, probably among the best on any console that gen. Saturn didn't have as many RPGs as PSone (in Japan it had better support for RPGs though), but what RPGs it did have were pretty stellar, and Panzer Dragoon Saga was head and shoulders the best. But... I rank SCII, on 3DO, higher than those two gems. IMHO, Star Control II, even though an action/RPG, really is the best RPG of that entire gen, hands down. Just a legendary game, and not too many have tried to mimic it, not because it's "unknown" but, IMHO...because it's just the pinnacle of that form of action/RPG (asteroid-style multidirectional shooter with RPG leveling up and strategic battles).
Ur Quan Masters is the open sourced version of Star Control 2 blessed by the original developers. There are versions for different platforms and according to this: http://forum.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?topic=4631.0 it looks like an iPhone version is close. I personally can't wait.
Star Control 2 would be fantastic on the iphone. I had the 3D0 version and I distinctly remember a lack of sleep one Christmas in the mid nineties when I got it. The melee mode was a ton of fun and the diversity among the different aliens and their ships gave the game a depth and personality that still impress me all these years later. I would love to revisit it.
Did this port get cancelled? So whatever happened with this? Anyone know? The forum link in the thread above and the website for the group porting it (http://www.cci-games.com/) both say "almost done!" but that was more than 6 months ago..
This is also my favorite game ever. Had it on the PC and the 3DO. Been meaning to find my old 3DO disc to integrate the music and video with the Ur Quan Masters version. Melee mode was great, but there was so much more to the game. The personality of all the different aliens was teriffic. Such fond memories!
