Cool. I had read it but didn't come away from it as the guy hated it. Just that if you were expecting exploration and layers of depth like the developers intended your gonna be disappointed. If your 5 gamer buddies thought he hated it though I guess I must be a glass half full kinda guy and have to assume its negative
We are talking about developers who literally threaten, on their Kickstarter page, to beat up their investors, and you're oh so worried about the tone people take with criticism of them and their half-baked game?! I'm sorry, I don't notice the title moderator near your name. Who exactly appointed you the top cop of the Star Command thread?
Wow.This was his point. He's been here for ages and is trying to avoid unneccesrry bickering and chest beating and instead focus on the game and its pros and cons. Then you attack him for trying to promote calm. Its getting very North Korean in here and the game hasn't even dropped yet
Never mind. I'll keep these thoughts confined to places where the ludicrous Star Command Defense Force are not in full deploy. This must be how Gabrien feels.
Why would they "valiantly try to make it sound ok"? They have no motivation to move units. Is it possible that they actually did like it? I'm not sure if I'll like it but their points sound pretty valid. Its just sounds like a cool looking time management game. You put out fires, fire weapons, keep the floor clear of aliens and manage your crew. It works for heaps of less cool looking games so I'm sure there will be a few peeps who will like it. They mention that its dev started before FTL so while it might be compariable it shouldn't be seen as being a soft clone
I've just read both reviews.. IGN and Pockettactics... and.. I've got mixed feelings about it (just like everyone else I would assume). I think if you forget everything they ever told you/ everything you expected the game to be/ took back the 1.5 years that you've been drooling about this game... you'll come off with a positive feeling. It does look like quite a solid game. Mechanics wise does seem to work, there's a lot to do in the game. They have some form of story (albeit linear). And it seems to get ridiculously difficult 1.30 hour into the game (I was watching the latter part of the 20 minute gameplay for IGN). Few things I would point out that aren't covered (which I would appreciate if anyone had any additional information). 1 - are there any more ships aside from the one that they showed? 2 - what are the in game currency? All I see are tokens (are they the form of currency to purchase new ships?) 3 - if you can't complete a mission can you go elsewhere to another part of the galaxy in order to grind? (though, if this is a matter of not being able to micromanage well enough, grinding may not be enough)... 4 - can your crew run?!? they seem awfully relaxed strolling up to the battle in their own good time when everywhere hull breaches are happening and fires are starting.. I dunno - think I might still get it, but like the previous posters... more reviews are definitely necessary.. All in all, I've not lost all hope, though I can understand that they can't satisfy everyone.
Thanks for the link. This is a shame I feel - as it would have added far more depth and was what I was looking forward to: "Reading the original Kickstarter pitch - written in September 2011 - it seems like the game's original focus is mostly intact. But a few elements have been lost along the way We were promised a Civilization-style option to avoid warfare and focus on exploration, science, and diplomacy, but that's not really feasible in the final game - if you don't have a pair of guns and a crew of soldiers, you won't get far enough out to write one research paper. And diplomacy is rarely an option. Most intergalactic meetings are about war - in one chat, my three dialogue options basically boiled down to "let's fight", "let's fight", and "let's fight"."
Yeah as a backer of both kickstarters I feel pretty disappointed by that aspect being cut off from the game. I liked that random element in FTL (Get on the appstore already!) and it makes the journey more personal. Still, i'll be buying and judging the game based on what it is rather than what I wanted from it.
Well I've been waiting for literally years for this game so I'll be damned if I'm not going to at least give it a go. I'll hold my hand up and say that I am disappointed though. I know they've done the best they could but I have to agree with some of the more negative comments around this game, ie, the previews certainly indicate it is a pale shadow of what was originally planned (and advertised in fairness). Time will tell.
Whoa someone delete that XCOM thread - there's a new hardcore PC strategy game in town and all inferior products must now be rejected in its stead. All 3 reviews whether subtly or not touch on the fact that its not a strategy game, but I'm sure the developers are working on another Kickstarter to have that element implemented, as we speak. My views are of course subjective but I feel like at least the PT and PG previews basically call it boring. I know I was, halfway into that IGN plays video.
Alex, look at it this way: You have an axe to grind from looking at your comments : This is just as subjective and prejudiced and imbalanced as any so-called fanboi - you're the mirror banboi, in fact. Or do you have real misgivings to explain? So please take the above as a description of your motivation as it reads from the energy you're putting into all the negative-slanted criticism you seem to be doing. Let's look at what the game originally offered for a moment so we can actually talk about this game in a sensible and informative way: 1. Star Trek meets game dev story 2. Option of Research, Diplomacy, War 3. Open World exploration and story of races 4. Unique aliens with skills to "collect" 5. Etc and more - What it looks like is the current release version: 1. Star Trek meets game dev story 2. War 3. Linear story So imo if you are looking for a strategic game on release you'll be disappointed. If you are looking for an actiony game with some very lite rpg and sim elements then you might find a very fun game. What this suggests is anyone following the game will likely be disappointed, but the wider market of gamers in general might find something very fun and a bit different to the usual games out there on the market. I'm sure the devs have worked to the best of their ability on this and have as beginners made mistakes: Fallible even. But if the game finds success, I hope in their port to PC, they can perhaps start adding more layers eg 1 Change the minigame to more tactical 2 Add the research/diplomacy missions skills 3 Iterate travel to be more than current waiting ie the engine room token system? 4 Add open world and alien skills Eventually more ship designs. But definitely depends on success. So far there's some cool things to see in the vid. Definitely does not look as good as FTL, but then iOS game on a small screen against one of the best games of 2012, not surprised. It's odd how people become so irate about games, eg Bioware's ME3 fallout. Strange. I think Warballoon have caused some of this with giving premature release dates that dashes people's expectations, but overall well done to them for getting to releasing a full commercial game for 1st time: And let's hope they can satisfy most of the kickstarters and keep the virtuous cycle of that form of game crowdfunding going.
Apologies, maybe I didn't make myself clear. I didn't say "please be nice or I'll ban you", I said "please be nice, otherwise I'll burn your stupid house down". There's an example of how ridiculous the thread will become if we all act like you.
After watching and reading all of the previews, I'm holding to my prediction that this will be a warm pile of poo. I'm reminded of two truisms: Expectation is nothing more than premeditated resentment. The road to Disappointment starts at Expectation. So it looks like I'll be traveling to Dissapointment on the Resentment Express.
The TA article makes it sound like something I'll enjoy. I like the idea of manning rooms, FTL-style, but I also would have liked more random elements to boost replay value. If the game plays out in exactly the same way every time I'm not sure how many times I'll bother... it'd need to be damn entertaining. And both are your own fault
Not entirely. The stage was set with their KS pitch, and that's where the expectation originates. Had I come to the party within the last few months and been totally unaware of any design ideas prior to that, then I wouldn't have any level of expectation. Or interest for that matter, as what I'm seeing now is not my thing at all. If nothing else I have a new, much simpler, philosophy when it comes to backing KS projects now...treat it as nothing more than a donation, don't get wrapped up in it, and most importantly, don't expect anything from it.
Yeah, the "open-world/galaxy" exploration ala roguelike is the feature I really hoped they'd stick with the most. I hope they can add this in the PC version = more replayable ship runs. Still think it will be a fun game, but the "player freedom" of exploration is always so rewarding in these games eg Elite.
