The storyline in SoM definitely takes the prize. But overall, it's really KRPG vs JRPG. Do you prefer turn-based battles or real-time. I've always been a fan of KRPGs. Never liked those random battle screens xP.
Cool, one last question before I buy, is there much grinding in either of the games? Thats the one thing that puts me off with a lot of rpgs I've played, 50% percent of the game is just grinding which I don't find fun, I don't mind some grinding, but I don't want to spend most of my time killing things over and over again.
It's been a while since I played SoM but don't recall much grinding. FF1 has some back and forth since it's an open world format and something you have to figure out what to do next. However, in terms of difficulty I do not feel FF1 requires grinding just to get experience. SoM is probably your safest bet and despite my preference for FF1 I have many fond memories of SoM.
Yeah I went with SoM as backtothis said it had the better story and I prefer more real-time battles to turn-based.
Well so far I'm loving the combat, I was expecting it to be normal rpg combat where you hit the attack button while your character does damage based on random numbers, and then you use skills and what not, I love the more strategy action combat that this game has (never seen anything like it in an rpg). Story is great so far although I haven't gotten very far, and I totally didn't know that you had to start over if you died, got killed by a plant luckily I wasn't very far, so I guess the key to this game is not to die. Really liking it so far
I can either buy Secret of Mana and FFII or Chaos Rings. Own everything else which I'm interested in other than FFIII but that can wait. Suggestions?
Same here, loving SoM, could never get into chaos rings, but thats probably just cause I don't really like turnbased combat.
Well I am a turn based combat fan o) but I think I might get SoM anyway because it seems amazing, as well as FFII and shall leave CR for another time Going to sleep tomorrow, will check back for any other opinions before buying. Thanks!
Too bad about Lara Croft, I wanted to get it. Anyway, people seem to be saying that FF II has a better story than both I and III, but has some pretty funky levelling mechanic. Is it like the Elder Scrolls "learning by doing" stuff? And also, is there a true save anywhere or do you have to re-do a whole dungeon if you die in a boss-fight? I got stuck in CR because of it. Everybody said that CR doesn't require grinding, but I guess they were lying since the second mini-boss "Airvata") just kills my couple no matter what I do and even an element that he is weak to barely scratches him.
FF2 has better story over 1 and 3 is because 1 and 3 has no story at all. they focus more on the battle strategy part (what job combination to use) than the story itself. and for iphone FF1, you can save anywhere. for NDS ff3 (haven't try the iphone ver.) i remember you can only save in the world map or save points (actually almost every FF does, even FF1 was). i think they might changed the rules for the iphone port so you can save in dungeon too.
Last question before I get it, is secret of mana just combat or are there side puzzles and quests, etc.?
People say that you can, but it is like CR - if your party dies the save anywhere is deleted and you have to re-do the dungeon. Which is in WTF category for me. Do FFI and II have a true save anywhere that can be loaded after the party has been killed?
I'm considering Chaos Rings and found this iTunes review useful: Game, graphics, story, etc are all awesome top quality. Will easily give 40 hours or more gameplay, my first campaign took 10, and theres 4 storylines, plus a new game + mode for each. But please save some money and just stick to the small version, the ipad version is by no exaggeration just a blown up version. I took pics and compared the two they are identical. Other than that buy it! But not if: - It requires grinding or repeating large areas after dying. - It's really hard to complete. - It sucks.
Quick question for Secret of Mana. Most important aspect of an RPG for me is storyline, seems most ppl like the story, but how is the level of grinding in this game. I am someone who finds the amount of grinding in zenonia ridiculous ( especially from midway of the game onwards). How would you compare the amount of grinding to that of zenonia. I dont mind some grinding btw just not to the level of zenonia with all those fetch missions or "hunt" missions.
i am not sure cause i didn't died in a boss fight lol but FF1 has a "save" and a "quick save" function. once i accidentally deleted my save file, than i load it back by quick save.
