PocketGamer suck. They gave the best game on the iPhone 8/10 and gave Secret of Monkey Island 10/10. Nuff said.
Well, I happen to love The Secret of Monkey Island, but Space Miner is great! IMHO, complaining about the PocketGamer here won't change anything, folks. Better go to your iTunes stores and leave reviews, this will probably help the game more. And this game is a jewel that deserves all the assistance it can get! Anyway, at the risk of being boring, IMHO it would have sold more at the original price if a Lite was available. Personally, I was unsure if the controls would work for me (most action controls that fellow Toucharcaders love, don't). If I had known that they'd click with me so well, I would have gotten the game much sooner. And I am sure that I am not alone in this.
So ive been following this game for weeks and finally got around to purchasing it only to find its on sale ! YAY me. This game is worthy of my first ever post on toucharcade Long time lurker
Sorry if this has been asked before, but why is it that when my thumb is on the left directional control, the ship will continue moving in the direction that it was in at the same speed, but if I let go of the left directional control the ship stops?
You can see it as: 1) A bit of unrealism to make piloting the ship easier and avoid the "out-of-control" feeling that you get from the original Asteroids. 2) Your ship comes with automatic thrusters that immediately slow you down when you lift your thumb. Either way, if it weren't for that feature I would hate the space portions of this game as much as I hate every variation of the original Asteroids.
This was posted by Venan a while back about this... Concerning braking - This wasn't explained too well, but you can stop if you let go of both the wheel and the thrust button. (Or just the wheel if you are playing without the thrust button.)
Wow thats crazy, pocket gamer are way off base. If there is one thing this is, its a 5/5 game, no 8/10 its a freaking 10/10. They polished this game like a diamond. The controls are fantastic and if he can't control the ship then his hand eye cordorination must be terrible cause the controls are just perfect. I hope this developer makes enough money to create a 2nd game and a 3rd i'll buy each one sight unseen. This was the best iphone game i've played yet. Sad to see them have to lower the price to $2 today, the game is worth so much more. Hope they have a decent budget to advertise this game alot of people I talk too haven't heard of it yet and they should.
In all actuality, 8/10 isn't a bad score. My issue with the reviewer from Pocket Gamer, is he must have approached the review in the same way many of these reviewers do. They play the game for 10 minutes and toss out some synopsis of the entire game, assuming that there is a similar flow to the game throughout. It's the equivalent of using the first chapter of a book to form an analysis of the reading. It's quite frustrating when you look at how many games are ineffectively scored, across the entire spectrum of game reviews. Either way, if you haven't bought this game now, you need to be checked into a hospital for therapy.
Unfortunately, I am not yet totally drawn into this game. I am having a difficult time with the controls. My ship whips around and I don't feel as though I have control. Are you saying that is the way things start out and is normal? Will I feel more comfortable as I upgrade my ship? Something I found a bit annoying was when Uncle Jeb asked if I would help I said "No" and got funny replies. So, when that lady asked if I would help rescue people I said "No" thinking I would get funny answers again, but instead the game continued and I did not seem to get an opportunity for that mission. I returned to base and then went back to the sector hoping she would ask again, but she didn't. I ended up deleting my player and am now starting over. I had exactly an hour with my first player. Maybe by answering "No" a new dialog pops up saying "By answering No you will not get an opportunity to work on the mission. Are you sure you don't want to rescue the people?" The level of detail to this game is pretty fantastic, though. I love how each item has detailed descriptions. The Help pages are really well done. The scanner rotates on the ship. I do like the game, but getting my head wrapped around the controls has put a damper on things. I tried shrinking the wheel and switching between showing and not showing the thrust button and I still haven't found anything that feels comfortable.
It's a ship in space -- inertia will be an issue. To make things easier, the controls are set up so that if you let go of the directional wheel the ship slows down to a stop. It takes a bit to get used to it (particularly if your idea of ship controls is as unrealistic as, say, Meteor Blitz), but you'll get there. I believe that rejected missions will pop up later in the game -- there was not need to start over. Some missions are tied to specific sectors, others are not.
> It's a ship in space -- inertia will be an issue. My biggest problem is just controlling my turning. For some reason, I am having a difficult time getting the wheel to turn naturally or comfortably. I don't think my finger placement is right and so I'll try to turn and I don't. And then suddenly I'll pop in another direction when my finger gets back on correctly. I think I also tend to over-correct as well. So, in the end, I'm twisting/turning in ways I don't want to go. EDIT: > I believe that rejected missions will pop up later in the game Thanks. That is good to know.
Try using the thumb guide. It basically acts as a virtual cursor and shows the placement of your thumb on the directional pad relative to the ship. The end result is your ship basically points itself at the cursor. If you concentrate on that for a bit I think it helps make controlling the ship easier. Also, if you aren't using the thrust button, the cursor changes color when your thumb is getting near to the area where you will apply thrust. I hope that helps!
Thanks. I will try that. I was getting confused by that method, but now that I know to look at the colors, I will spend more time on it.
Control experience varies on different ships. Speedo ship will have alot easier time to be controlled even without enough thrust from engine whereas Cargo ship will be hard to control without a good engine. If you try to use the highest mass ship with worst engine, u'll know how hard it is to control the ship, even if u let go of both control, it will take few seconds to come to a full stop due to insufficient thrust.
amazing Straight up one of the best games I've played on my ipod- well time to watch shutter island !
Devs, can u add the option to enable our own music play in the game after completion of the game? I think after 7 complete game runs, i don't want hear the banjo music the 8th time.
The next update will allow players to listen to their own music (among other things). Thanks for your patience!
