Really? I've completed the game without ever casting ROK. You only need to counter it.

Indeed, if I'm thinking of the right tower, casting ROK as a counterspell could be fatal.

Hey, this was probably discussed but I'm having trouble searching for it with the size of the thread.

Question regarding the ruined inn across the bridge near the beginning.
When I refuse to read the enchantment for the girl, she attacks me. I'm given the opportunity to cast a spell, but nothing seems to have an effect. Attacking is useless as well. Is there anything to be done other than fleeing?

    Thanks!

    How did you get the
    Throeben Doors to open then?

Admittedly, I haven't looked through this forum (mostly due to not wanting spoilers), but I'm under the impression that you need to cast each pair of spells (both spell and counterspell) successively to get into the Throeben Doors. Otherwise, I don't get the letters needed to cast the spells nedded. (HELP!)

You can kill it using silver weapons.

Man, I have the silver chain but the game doesn't give me the option to use it.

If you completed S2 -- the second book -- then you could have multiple options for fighting and defeating this enemy.

The creature is undead and so can be destroyed by silver weapons. You can carry over at least three from Sorcery 2 -- silver arrows and a bow bought in the market, a magic chain bought from a chainmaker on the eastern path , and a silver sword plucked from right in front of Lord Shinva's crypt -- use MAG or big to evade the trap on it. I've had my best success with the chain. I've never tried the bow and arrows so I don't know if that will work for you or not. If it's anything like S2, you probably need to have fought a fair number of combat encounters in order for your aim to be good enough to stand a chance, but I don't know for certain. I've always been able to destroy her with the chain, no problem.

    ETA:

Odd. It gives me the option. Maybe there's a bug? Or maybe you need to take the conversation options in a particular order to get the option? Happily, the inn is outside Mampang so you can rewind freely to find the answer!

    Respectfully,

    Brian P.

The spells are already embedded in the doors. You only need to cast the correct counterspells. I don't know what you mean about not getting the letters. The order of the spells is:

    1. HOT - cast dOC to counter
    2. ROK - cast fAL to counter (where f = the Greek letter phi, a circle with a vertical line through it)
    3. YAZ - cast TEL to counter
    4. ZEd - cast RES to counter

I figured it out late last night. Apparently, I had to move from the spot I was in, and do some actions before the right letters were presented to me. Very confusing!

Anyway, I ended up killing my old bud Flanker, and saving Jann, but continued to be cursed by the Throben. I apparently did not beat it right. Is there any other place to get TOP besides the Daddy-Ley caves? I don't want to have to replay all four books just to get my final hidden spell...

    If you have the
    blonde wig
you can cast it in the
farthest northeast tower of the eastern college
    , the cat tower
    :'(
or after hitting the ground if you're thrown from the wall in the outer yard.

I felt so bad about breaking her heart. In my headcanon
I make her the head cook in Mampang after I become Archmage, seeing as Throgg had a bad turn with some 'ant powder.

There are so many ways to complete the game it's hard to say which one is "right", but I agree it's ideal to
    save Flanker
    and
    break or avoid Throben's curse
. Now you have two things to try for on your next playthrough, and I'm sure you'll discover even more.

    I like that idea!

You can brush her off from the beginning if you don't let her touch you. Then she won't follow you around like a lost puppy and you might not feel so bad.

Or just pick a fight with Throgg right away and kill him. Never deal with Filk at all.

Or find one of the other ways past the wall.

Has anyone managed to find Kasheesh the black elf in Mampang? If you meet him in S3 he warns you to remember his name.

    Hi, denizens of the thread!

to Brian's question about the food: you can always
cut some meat from the roachpig in the vaults
    then
cook it on the fire near the alleys
    .

    to question on
how to bypass Throben: that "crazy love"¹ in the field shrine² tells the Analander that he will be killed by a man in the Centre of the square, so that's the place number one to meet him. Then there is the field gate exit. I guess, the third place would be somewhere near out of Larder's Tunnel
. So he knows we're coming in and waits for us in places where we can show up at 90%. Clever one.

¹ — any ideas who is SHE, except those said above (not Filk nor Aliizi)?

² — I guess this shrine is dedicated to Earth (or Nature) itself. See: unpainted CLAY on TREE stump; "prayers for harvests" and all such; "earth shifts"; "empty heavens" as a god thereafter (when heavens are empty, earth is full); and the last one pro: if the Analander breaks the idol, in one of the dialogues with Ranii she says something like "the fields are dying", because "the force keeping them up is lost". And no, this force is not of the beacon — that one is NARROW FOCUSED on Archmage's quarters, and the fields are not in its path even.

Another question still unanswered: what the BRONZE COINS are for? BTW, the Golden Egg use is fun :)
Still sorry there's no use for the Giant Net in p4. I would like to catch
    Archmage Goat
with it (ROFL) and then piece it with the
    Blessed Spear
    in retiarius-style!!!

    Best regards,
    J.S.A.

Are these the ones you find in the haunted inn? They show up as "ancient coins" in your inventory, the same as some coins you can find in S3. You can use them to pay for food in Kariamma in S3 (the cook's reaction lets on that they are very valuable) but I have not found a use in S4.

I haven't found this yet. Any hints?

    Barrier Tower - West College

Has anyone gotten past the tower with the magical barrier in the west college? I read through all 54 pages of the thread over the past few days... don't remember seeing it mentioned. Therefore, I figure I'm missing something stupidly simple OR it's only present in my game ;-)
