She was male in the books. So was Nylock. I loved the game books but they were very much THIS IS FOR BOYS (so was d&d in general, to be fair to Steve Jackson) and it's really, really good to see that being balanced out in the Inkle games.

Well, a hunch I had about how to avoid Throben did not pan out.
If you approach the northern ruins in the field (not the ones where you find the trap door), you will be compelled to climb down the side of the mountain. If you continue down, a Goldcrest Eagle will rescue you and drop you at the entrance to the Inner College. But then that familiar hand grabbed my arm...

    Has anyone else had success?

Brian - would you mind giving me a clue about finding the vaults? I spent quite a long time trying to get into the well, but to no avail.

Finding the vaults? You don't need to go into the well.
    1. Find a disguise; any of them will do, I think. I would also recommend taking along at least one bottle of holy water.
    2. Go to the center of Mampang to the Archmage's statue.
    3. Directly to your east, just below the avenue leading east toward the tavern and the alleys, there is an archway leading into a building.
    4. Go into this building. There should be a guard post to your upper right, a storage room to your upper left, a fountain directly in front of you, "Nylock" the shopkeeper to your lower right, a bedroom to yoru lower left, and a staircase in the back.
    5. The vaults are directly down that back staircase. Be prepared for heavy combat, difficult puzzles, and traps.
    6. To get some help -- I don't know if this happens for everyone but it does for me as I completed S2 and saved Khare -- visit Nylock and find her talking to an old frenemy from Khare. Talk to this friend in a neutral to friendly fashion and , when he boasts about the success of Khare, respond "Thanks to me". He'll catch that signal, and offer you something. Ask for information. He will give you a clue that will help against the most dangerous combat enemies in the vault.

Be advised : Successfully solving the vault will teleport you to the prison cell just before the Doors of Throben, so be prepared for that eventuality.

By the way, speaking of old friends .. if you've played S2 before, saved Khare and visited Nylock the shopkeeper here, you'll see an old friend who's bringing his business here.

I don't want to do it this playthrough but if someone wants to sacrifice a player I would suggest
Go into the tavern and drink ale until you pass out.

I say this because, if you attack the shoulder clasp of the first werewolf-guard in the Vaults, he will tell you the last thing he remembered was drinking in the bony hand tavern...

... so what happens if we get drunk in that same tavern? Will we find a golden opportunity to catch lycanthropy?

Oh, yes. Count me as another non-fan of zed-rewind. I understand its game purpose and have no complaints about it being in place during the game proper, but I'd like a bit more freedom in the post game. Thanks!

    Respectfully,

    Brian P.

On my current playthrough I'm trying things I never did before, and it turns out I was wrong! After you have entered the crater, if you disturb the giant bat,
it will summon birdmen, one of which scoops you up and takes you to the nest that you can't otherwise access unless you go down into the ravine.
From there you can access the path down to the ruined beacon.

Okay, went into the tavern and had three ales, promptly passing out. I was carrying 95 gold at the time.

The mercenaries at the table promptly robbed be blind and tossed me in the alley outside the tavern. I wonder if things would have been different if I had been near-penniless? The peasant-turned-werewolf must have been near broke when he passed out in the Bony hand ...

Maybe I'll find out some time in a future playthrough. The thing is, I prepare my character very carefully for each go-round so a Zed-reset costs more than an hour of real time.

    Respectfully,

    Brian P.

I've looked through most of the thread for some answers but I found none so I'll just throw out all my questions here:

Is there anything more I can do in
the flower house? I saw aliizi go there after the event at the door tower, and I heard Molka talking to her, but couldn't really do anything.

Is it possible to get the merchant and guard outfits once I'm inside? If not, can I go back outside of the castle to get one?

    Does the
    egg
    from nylock do anything?

how do I actually go about doing other endings, I've only been able to work out
    Flanker's
    and
    Jann's,
    but they're pretty obvious.

Do I only have one chance to
    follow aliizi?
    Since I can't trigger
seeing her in the door tower more than once.

I was following this thread for awhile and enjoy all the discoveries here.

As many people asked about how to avoid meeting Throben, I decided to try by myself and here is how to do it.

    1. After entering Mampang, go to get the key in the room near that one of the Sightmaster
    2. Use that key to open the door on the left of the Mampang entrance (the otherside of that door is the field).
    3. When you're on the field, turn right twice and you'll see a beehive.
    4. Try to get the beeswax inside and you'll be bitten till death.
    5. You'll get rescued by the member of the temple and find yourself wake up inside the gambling temple.
    6. From there, you can go to towers or enter the Throben doors without encountering Throben.

*Notice the time: I did step 2-4 at night, so I'm not sure if it works in daytime.

Overall, it was very satisfying that every time I died, I could reset the game right at that place without being brought back by ZEd spell. Afterward, I tried to complete the game, but I made a mistake and got caught by a Birdmen. He brought me directly to the Archmage (damn that creature!!). In the end, I chose to end my life in honor by jumping from the window to outside... (it was quite funny that at this fateful moment, I couldn't cast FAL and the invisible bird didn't come either).

I want to try it again but was too busy, so I hope someone will try this method and post a full guide how to finish the game without being cursed by ZEd spell ;)

See one on my answers below for something you can gain. You can't interact with
    Aliizi
there as far as I know, but after you leave she will come to you
the next time you sleep and promise to help you in the Archmage's tower.

Merchant: I have not tried this myself, but apparently
playing Swindlestones with the merchant at the inn will eventually get you one.

Guard: I have found two ways.
Molka will give you one if you ask the right questions
    or
you can take one from a passed-out guard in the mess hall after trying to enter with another outfit and starting a fight.

There's also a Captain outfit you can obtain in 3 places that I know of.

I have not yet found a use for it.

If you follow the clues above regarding
    Aliizi
you'll discover her ending. Another obvious one is to
    wear the crown
. I don't want to rob you of all the fun of discovering how to
    become apprentice to Valiquesh
    or
    command the army of Mampang.
    :p

As far as I know, yes.

    I made it to avoid
getting cursed by Throben although I met him. He mentioned that I saved Karianma. I was able to decide whether I want to get cursed by him or not. I played with a no beacon run.

Awesome, thanks! I have already completed the game without being cursed, because
Throben will offer you the choice to decline if you avoided using the beacons in S3.

If you've finished at least once with ZEd, It's not that much of a stretch to finish without it. You won't be able to make use of
    Jann's ability
but you can find someone or something else to protect you when you confront the Archmage.

    Have you found
    Libra's dome
? Just go there once you are fully prepared, and then you can rewind after trying something risky that doesn't pan out.

    Yep,
    Libra's dome
is fantastic if you time its use carefully. The area is not so large that going back there will undo too much if you get some things out of the way first. I used it liberally while trying to find all the counter spells by completing the college areas.

    Hi,

    I've met
Throben inside Mampang. Then some hours later I died. I can choose the ZEd spell in the spell menu, but i cannot cast it. The screen only says 'unknown', if I choose ZEd. So right now I am just dead and cannot get back into the game.

Have I missed something in the conversation with
    Throben
, or do I just missed something else?

    You can
throw it at the sleepless ram
    . It does
    nothing to it
    , and it is
    pretty much useless
    .

Have you tried pressing the Cast anyway?

If that doesn't work you have probably found a bug and can submit it to Inkle (Cog icon, Send Feedback, Attach Files).

Very interesting! Thank you. A couple notes:

You can definitely encounter the bees and get rescued by Effe's followers in the daytime. I had only encountered the bees after already being cursed so didn't know it could allow you to avoid Throben.

There is more than one method of getting from the side courtyard to the field and you don't absolutely need the key from the latrine. The ZOB spell is another way if you have a crystal tooth.

After getting cursed, enter the ZED tower in the left college of magic. You can turn the hourglass, unscrew it and remove the sand; this will break the curse. You will get a rewind point to the tower, similar to Libra's dome, but the curse will be back if you do the rewind and you can only break it again by rewinding all the way to before when you first entered Mampang.

That's working as designed. Cast it regardless.
