Burning with curiosity about another thing: Anyone found any interesting outcomes with Spoiler Farren Whyde? Whenever I talk to him he refuses to tell me my fortune and seems to be trying to avoid thinking about who I am. Then the Birdmen come and take him away to the tower. I've only ever seen his body lying facedown in the tower, but I gather that he has a much bigger role in the original gamebooks...
I reckon the only reason Farren Whyde is in the game Spoiler is as a red herring. In case anyone hasn't read the books, Farren Whyde was the Archmage. Maybe. Or perhaps the Archmage was just occupying his body. It was left somewhat ambiguous.
I can think of an extremely quick way to lay hands on FOUR helpings of them if you have one to start with. Spoiler When you arrive in the city, go to the eastern square where the food seller is, talk to him, then go back to the square. Do not wear a guard or guard captain uniform. You will be spotted by three sightmasters, who will attempt to trick you into wearing a lethal coat. Once you have got out of that -- the easiest way is to just not wear the thing in the first place -- you will enter combat. Cast ROK. That will turn two sightmasters to stone. Afterwards, smash their statues, and that will give you four helpings of rok dust. I feel mildly guilty about that because Spoiler I have a nasty suspicion the sightmasters have been brainwashed by the archmage. If I could meet them under the correct star formation, it is possible I could free them. I think it possible they were kidnapped by birdmen, then brainwashed in the tower. Then again, maybe not. There is a sightmaster in the barracks who apparently betrayed our friend the Sergeant at the Cantopani gate to death and torture for personal gain. And apparently of his own free will. Respectfully, Brian P.
Meanwhile, I found a way into a beacon! Spoiler At game start, DO NOT SLEEP OR REST. Instead, head directly to the first bridge on the left and fall down it. Now that it is night, the Hoofborn will leave you alone. March one step to the right and then head up the path to the ruined tower. Kill the troll there, then march up the stairs. The steps are ruined, but as you get further up more steps will appear before you -- and you will step through a timeslip, traveling back centuries to the day that the beacon was still intact! Explore the top thoroughly and you will be approached by a figure. Speak to this figure -- the Custodian of the Lights -- to learn all sorts of interesting things. Do what you think best. Then you can leave and the option will thereafter be closed. You will not be able to travel through time like that again. It's okay to stop in the hoofborn cave and deal with the body there first -- it's just important to move quickly and not rest at all. I think it's also important to get there at night. Otherwise a hoofborn patrol will interfere and take you away. Far better to encounter them next morning! Respectfully, Brian P.
Regarding our large-eyed friend in the barracks Spoiler there's a Jewel of Gold in his room. In the Fortress of Sorcerers, I'm pretty sure we can guess he's been brainwashed.
But that makes no sense at all. Consider the events of S3. Spoiler Why not brainwash the sightmaster sergeant after he was red-eyed? So there must be some limitations to the power of the crown. I note it seems to have worn off our character in the cell. Imagine a red-eyed sightmaster with birdmen to transport and guide him. Or, better, imagine an entire squadron of such paired creatures. Analand would not stand a chance! In any event -- the betrayal happened in Analand, and if you look in his mind you will see no abduction prior to taht. I don't think the crown can work at long distances. if it could, the archmage would not need to send an army against Analand -- he could dominate it effortlessly from his stronghold in Mampang, and the quest would never have started. I think it more likely that the action occurred of his own free will. The birdmen went looking for someone who could be motivated by money, and they eventually found one. Perhaps they acquired the crown in the first place in a similar way. Respectfully, Brian P.
The repetition factor of this game is confusing. Some things revert back to their previous state while others don't. Do events, once undone, need to be done again? Will I still be able to apply information I learned the first go around if I choose to skip doing something again in future? Since the games usually kinda make note of all your great deeds, will that mean my final play through will result in all of the various side quests never being resolved? If you're gonna adhere to a time loop, magic or no, respect causality. Or include an aspirin coupon in the app purchase.
Strike my last post. Don't care anymore. I'm done with this game. The first 3 were a delight. This one just made me rage quit. Unavoidable insta-deaths. Magic that inexplicably goes wrong simply because of poor writing (ex. HOW tells me there's no way out when, in fact, there is). Going through the repeated hassle of obtaining provisions so you can set out to explore (tower hopping, alleys, whatever) and then losing all your food. How does water destroy beef jerky and paper? I've frantically retrieved some girl's number from the jeans I put in the wash. (Haven't tried it with a Slim Jim, but I'm confident it wouldn't disintegrate on contact with the soapy water.) And the removal of the unique rewind feature as part of the story just makes every act one of trepidation. I can't even enjoy the story anymore. I'm too busy wondering if I'll die from selecting the wrong dialog choice and have to do this all over again. If I can enjoy getting repeatedly disemboweled by my nephews when we play first person shooters, this game has no excuse for turning me into Lewis Black.
I've never had a problem entering the Spoiler tower and the beacon no matter how long I take, what time of day I arrive or whether I meet the Spoiler Hoofboorn . Why did you find you needed to rush there? You can fall off various things ( Spoiler snakerope, both bridges ) after meeting the Spoiler hoofborn in order to get to the Spoiler beacon as well.
Comments I'd read earlier implied other people were having problems and it took me forever to find the right tower. I thought it was in Mampang proper for the longest time. I didn't do exhaustive testing, but I assumed it was possible to NOT go up the stairs if you didn't arrive at exactly the right time. I'd tried to go up the path before and been stopped by the people we spoke of, so I had to do it at night. I also had to enter from BELOW. For some reason, I never got the dialog option if I successfully crossed the bridge and approached it from above. Don't understand it. By the way, Inkle, if you're reading this, two story bugs to report: Spoiler 1. I got Aliazis ending and brought along the book of magical prisons. After Aliazi helped me defeat the archmage, I had him read the book and got the previous archmage freed. She was a very interesting woman. Yet , once she was out of the book , Aliazi disappeared from the text and was not mentioned again. Surely the two most powerful women in the world would have much to talk about? Even if she went invisible, shouldn't we have SOME indication? 2. I met Magjit the guard in outer Mampang and ran into him again in the Mampang cells. I broke him out andf we went down to see Commander Cartoum together, where I successfully bluffed my way past him. Why didn't Magjit come with me? He disappeared from the story at that point. Surely if I can talk the Commander into letting me go, I can get him out as well, considering his only crime is entering the inner city without permisison, and he's NOT the Analander? Respectfully, Brian P.
If you want to report bugs or thoughts directly to Inkle it's quicker to go to the 'Settings' menu and tap Send Feedback (this is assuming you're on iOS.) I agree on both points that it would be interesting and fit with the story to resolve those loose ends/disappearances.
...If you've got story bugs to report, please please please use the "send feedback" option in the Cog menu when you see the issue you want to tell us about -- it'll include your save file so we can jump in and see exactly what you're seeing! Feedback is definitely v. welcome. EDIT: As the above poster said, faster than I did cheers jon
Another play through complete. Absolutely superb! This is easily my favourite series on iOS. It has taken so much from the original source material and crafted wonderful new things around it. So much to experience and to see and to find. I find myself wanting to write an essay on what I liked and what worked for me and where things didn't always but I'll skip to the tl;dr version: excellent. Edit: A question... Spoiler Is it possible to save the minimite without dying?
I understood your question to mean Spoiler is it possible to rescue him from the cell without going through at least one ZEd resurrection , and the answer to that is no (someone please tell me if I'm wrong). You can avoid killing him if you have Spoiler Yb'ran , but there is no way to avoid dying by Spoiler jumping from the tower or getting devoured by the Archmage-goat after escaping the cell. You will at least Spoiler have the key for your next go-round. If you did have Yb'ran release you, grab Jann and take him to the Archmage for a poignant reaction...at least he survives (maybe). My favorite ending, I think, is to Spoiler return to Analand with Flanker and Jann, having lifted Throben's curse , with or without the Crown. I think I achieved this on my second playthrough; on my first I had to Spoiler kill Flanker .
You retain items and knowledge. For example, if you find a key, or learn a password, you will still have it after being resurrected. You don't have to repeat the actions that led you to it. Some actions you can't repeat, like stamina gains. I am sorry you got so frustrated. Try to play once all the way through, dying as many times as you need to. Think of it as a "hard reset", like you can get at the end of Sorcery! 2 if you didn't find all four spell lines. There is also one place in Mampang where you can create a traditional rewind point. And each time you successfully complete the game, you will get a single rewind. I took advantage of this a lot, once I had optimized the early part of the game to my liking.
There are several distinct endings, and many variations of each depending on who is with you at the end, whether you destroy the Crown or not, etc. Have fun! Naggamanteh is in a place all the gods will warn you about...even Slangg! I don't remember how things played out in the book with the other characters you mentioned. I definitely recognized the illustration of Valygnia, but I would have assumed that the character was male.
I believe it was just a matter of dialogue choice. If you don't try to go up the invisible stairs and simply exit the ruins, I don't think you can go back. You can't enter it from above. If you cross the Whispering Bridge, there is no option to go down that path. But as mentioned, you can get down into the ravine several ways after meeting the Hoofborn, including simply doubling back to the first bridge.
