So, I'm going to sound like the 40 year old gamer that I am...but does anyone else find the gameplay videos somewhat dizzying? Is it any better when you are controlling the movement?
This is the first time a seriously fun platformer has come to the iPhone. No, not a terrible port of a recognised franchise (Sonic). No, not a game that revolves around one well polished iPhone-specific feature cause the dev couldn't envision bringing a real mechanics of a traditional platformer (Rolando). No, not a game that's entirely full of polish yet the traditional platformer gameplay is dumbed down as a whole (Castle of Magic). No, this is a TRUE, creative, well polished platformer that stands up to anything the PSP, DS, XBLA and PSN have to offer. Well done, sirs, well done.
I will pick this up since everyone seems to like the controls..........a shame, I still have castle of magic on my phone but don't play it because of the controls and also don't want to erase it because it looks beautiful ! Not in the Canadian store yet

But Meteor Blitz and iBlast Moki, arguably the conquerors of their specific genre were their devs first games as well. So can Soosiz make this a hatrick for indie developers and, yet again, conquer its genre? The answer is a resounding yes, but don’t let you think that this game is absolutely perfect. The basic idea of Soosiz is literally a bare bones platformer with a twist – all the planets you jump on exerttheir own gravity and when you’re near their surfaces they suck you straight onto their floor. Influenced by Super Mario Galaxy, this gameplay element gives a twist, and stops it becoming an average, typical platformer. In these levels, you have to rescue your little friends, while defeating a variety of enemies and eventually make it to the end portal. It sounds basic but with a few clever assets Soosiz contains, it makes it a fun and lengthy experience. Loading up the game, you notice the game’s exclusive graphical style, which is spread to everything, including the buttons you need to press to go to the options menu, for example. There are nice animations of little soosiz creatures jumping around during level select, where the exact graphical style of the actual stages is kept. This really clean, colourful graphical style adds so much to this game – any other look and it would have made this game fail. So kudos to the artist, he has done a remarkable job. And as I write this review, I notice that the world you are currently on, the unique things in that world is reflected in the main menu, so in the mushroom world where there is a brown background with little cartoon clouds you get this view in the menu, even the logo changes colour. The graphics are this game’s strong point. The controls are kind of like Zombieville, except replace the shoot icon with jump and make said icons a lot nicer. The left and right directions are in the bottom left corner, and the jump button in the bottom right corner. This is the perfect control method, I am 100% sure no other control method would work with the accuracy and precision that the current one does. But good controls are nothing without good gameplay, which this game gives in heaps. Although the basic idea – move, jump on enemies, get sucked onto planets – may sound a little tedious, with the added feature of you having to rescue other little Soosiz creatures that can give you enhancements like jumping higher or more health. There is also gold, silver and bronze medals awarded on every level for getting all of these little friends – but this can get hard in some places. One soosiz is normally well hidden in a secret in the level, and every time so far I have gone through a level completely unaware of the secret because it is so well hidden. This actually makes what you would assume a rather easy, casual game to have a hidden ace up its sleeve. There are many levels in the game, with about 6 normal levels, 1 boss and 2 blue coin mini game mission, and 7 worlds. The normal levels are quite similar in design, but the blue coins and boss levels are the best parts of the game. The blue coin levels are literally a special ‘mini’ game level, but aren’t so mini – they are quite long and have a unique control method or gimmick with them. The ones I played were one where you are on top of a ball and where the gravity is not focused on the planets but focused with arrows showing in the background. These are incredibly accurate (the ball one had perfect ‘ball physics’ as it got harder to control as you sped up) and all involve having to get 50 coins in a certain time limit. These levels are somewhat difficult and a welcome break to the platforming design. You can also get Star Power, which is literally starman from the Mario games where you become invincible and can run through enemies. You need 100 coins to activate this, and once it is unlocked you can use it whenever you want The Boss Levels are where the platforming goes from great to AMAZING. They have exactly the same gameplay as the rest, it’s just the background of the levels (an eerie black) to an atmospheric soundtrack add to tension, and as well as what I see as better level design than the rest of the levels (I’ll come to level design in a sec) and cool special enemies. There is also this hidden charm to these levels – well, not charm, just this feeling that leaves you really excited. The boss at the end of the levels is a bit anticlimactic – I’ve only played the first one, and I’m sure they get harder but it seems they have a predictable attack pattern and are generally easy. The level design of these types of levels, and all levels are excellent. Kudos to the level designer, and to the general designer of the gameplay elements, and to everything, really – for what looks like a two man team Touch Foo have outdone themselves. The music is where I come to what may be the first flaw of the game. Not that it’s bad – the general music for the levels is great, it’s just I have two problems. The first is that in the Boss Levels the music is absolutely great...until it suddenly breaks into the synth-heavy, accordion style music that the game has. This nearly breaks the tension if you weren’t already focused on completing the level in the first place. And secondly, although the music in the game suits it well, and you get used to the style of it very quickly, the trailer music was phenomenal. We really need this in the game – maybe the final boss fight? It was an incredible tune. That’s Soosiz for you there. I can tell you now it’s the best - and will probably stay there until MAYBE Plushed comes along - platformer on the iPhone. Sp really, you should go and buy it now, as it’s worth way more than its $2.99 price tag. But there are a few flaws to point out that really need to be addressed. Firstly, there is no reward for killing an enemy. No coin or anything. You may be wondering why I bring up this point, but due to the gravity it is very easy to dodge enemies without attacking them at all. A reward of maybe a single coin would be a lot better. Also, in the blue coins level, if you make a wrong move, say fall onto a planet far away sometimes you can’t jump back to your original location, end up missing a coin and having to restart. And finally, apparently there are only 12 secrets according to the level stats. This is disappointing – the secrets were one of my favourite parts of the game and only having 1 or 2 per world are a bit of a letdown. And now I think about it, that’s all my problems with the game, as well as the ones I’ve already mentioned in other paragraphs. Soosiz is also a message - that indie devs can occasionally have more talent than bigger ones. Touch Foo, along with Alley Labs and Godzilab have proved this point, and I am actually incredibly excited to hear of Touch Foo's next project. So Soosiz is hands down the best platformer on the iPhone and one of the best games in general, but it still has its faults that make what could be the best game on the App Store to one of the best. Don’t let these faults put you off – it is an amazing game, and incredible fun, and for only $2.99, an incredible bargain. Get it and you won’t be disappointed. Rating: 4.5 Stars: “The current best platformer, with amazing graphics and gameplay to boot. Definitely worth the $2.99 – you won’t be disappointed." I had mentioned before that it's disappointing that this game doesn't have that fantastic trailer music in it. I had thought it would have done great at the title screen or in the first level with the green fields. I don't want the devs to take out any music that they currently have in an update but I wish they would put it in somewhere if they can afford it, like in a new level or something , it's fantastic.
