Sony PSP

  1. Hi

I have been pulled into the world of LBP. I love it!
Problem: I do not have a PSP. Or PS3
Since the game will pobably never come out on iPhone, I'll get a PSP.

Should I? Is LBP on PSP any good? Are there other good PSP games? What else can the PSP do? Which PSP does what, and which is best?

    Thank you. :)

In my personal opinion, the best thing about PSP is being able to play FFVII, FFVIII, MGS, RE1/2/3 and Castlevania Sympony of the Night on the move.

PSP can go online via wifi, play music, movies photos etc. Good games I really enjoy, GTA vice city stories and liberty city stories; GUN; Burnout legends.

    Warning: Long answer

It can do a lot of what the iPhone/touch platform does:

    Net surfing
    Music player
    Video player
    Games (obviously)
    Viewing photos
    Digital comics reader

Of course, there are some caveats. The internet browsing experience is not as good as on the iPhone/touch. The browser itself isn't as good as Safari, the lack of touch screen means typing is handled via the analog stick and face buttons, etc. It's just not very practical to use the PSP to surf the net.

As far as music, video and games are concerned, you can hook up your PSP to your PC (NOT Mac, though...which is a glaring issue, IMHO, although there are workarounds) via Sony's official program called MediaGo. MediaGo serves as the PC portal to their PSN storefront. MediaGo is to PSN what iTunes is to the iTunes Store (including App Store).

You can purchase digital download games just as you would on the App Store. Keep in mind, however, that used UMDs are less expensive in most cases (there are some where DD versions of games are cheaper, though, like Prinny and Disgaea), so you'd do well to buy the PSP 3000 which can use UMDs and play downloaded games from PSN rather than the PSPGo which can only play digital downloads. Plus, the 3000 model is a good deal less expensive, even after you buy a 16GB memory stick pro for downloads.

Music...PSN, to my knowledge, does NOT have a music store...which is a HUGE oversight on Sony's part. Apparently they're just now making deals with labels...which is odd because Sony OWNS some labels. Yet, no Sony owned label music on PSN. Regardless, if you already have a music library on your computer, MediaGo syncs with it no problems.

Movies were similar, but since 2008 there have been movie and TV show downloads on PSN. Why it took Sony so long to do this when Apple has had movies and tv shows on iTunes since '05/06 is beyond me. Just like music labels, Sony OWNS movie studios and tv studios...and in fact OWNS a rather large library of films and tv shows. BTW, if you have the dual UMD/digital download PSP, you can both purchase UMD versions of movies or the DD versions. Honestly, I'd go with the DD versions, as you can also rent them AND share them across platforms (you can watch them on your PC via MediaGo's included video player, on your PSP, or on your PS3 if you choose to get one).

Music and video quality is stellar, IMHO.

The comic reader is new. And you have to go to another site to download the actual reader. You can't, for some stupid reason known only to the "brains" at Sony corporate, simply download the reader program itself from the PSN storefront.

I don't understand. How do you love it if you don't have a PSP? Do you have it on the DS? And if so, why do you need it on another device?

As far as games are concerned, it really depends on your tastes:

If you're expecting iPhone/touch style gaming, don't get a PSP. The former errs more toward "minute gaming" while the latter errs more toward longer gaming time sorts of games befitting of a portable game system that aren't really home console style (where you've got a lot of time to get into something) but are more than what you'd typically find on a mobile platform like iPhone/touch. One issue I had with PSP in the early going is that quite a few of the games originally erred not as "pick up and play" as they should be for a portable. You'll still run into it occasionally even now on the platform. These are games with unbearably long cutscenes, and take a long time to really get into. Avoid these games, IMHO.

Surprised no one mentioned God of War: Chains of Olympus, btw. While based on the console series, and playing exactly like said console versions, the game is far more "pick up and play" for the PSP. It fits due to that. Cutscenes are kept to a bare minimum, the intro cutscene lasts about a minute at most, the rest mere seconds, and the action is unrelenting and nonstop so it doesn't really have some of the "slower" parts of the home console versions.

    Same deal with Resistance: Retribution.

    Others to look into:

Loco Roco 1, 2, and Loco Roco Midnight Carnival
    Patapon 1 and 2
    Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins
    Crush
    Ridge Racer 2
    Tekken 6
(or Tekken Dark Resurrection, if you wanna go lower price)
    Guilty Gear Judgment
    Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max
    Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars
    PowerStone Collection
    Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness

Those games, save for Patapon 2 and Midnight Carnival, are available both on UMD and via digital download.

These games are only available on PSN via download:

Unbound Saga (not great, but only $5 and for a nifty little beat 'em up)
    Everyday Shooter
    Super Stardust Portable
    Beats
(a rhythm game that uses the music you have on your memory stick)
Echochrome (you'll probably get a free voucher for the game when you buy a PSP)

And there's the PSP "Minis" program, which has games that would fit in on the App Store (and some are on the iPhone/touch App Store, like Let's Golf and Hero of Sparta). Of the Minis, the only one I'd recommend getting is Echoes. Everything else is either not good or overpiced (you can get the Gameloft games for a lot less on the App Store).

Ummm something called, I don't know.... A FRIENDS HOUSE OR STORE .

On topic, the PSP has som pretty cool games, Castlevania Draula X Chronicles, Powerstone series, some great GTA titles and if I recall, a PSX emulator, buy it in a bundle, I've seen some good ones like Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines+ Limited Edition PSP for $200, if you can get a good deal take a shot.

The PSP is a vastly underrated system, I got mine in December 2004 about a week after the Japanese launch and graphically it's still impressive for a portable. Thanks to the constant firmware updates the system can do everything the updated models can except tv-out. Once you get into custom firmware, ripping your old PSX games and the emulators there's no question that it's the best portable game system out there for the money right now. I still use my iPhone for gaming more often because it's what I have on me all the time but the PSP is the portable system I dreamed of having someday while playing my Game Boy in the early 90's.

    Yes. Yes you should.

Like you, I was awed by Little Big Planet, so I solely got a PSP Go for that game. Never regretted it at all. I got mine around a month ago and I'm still loving it.

Little Big Planet is definitely recommended, so is God Of War COO, Resistance Retribution, Motorstorm Arctic Edge, Pixeljunk Monsters, Burnout Dominator, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy, MGS Portable Ops, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, GTA CTW, Tekken 6 and Star Wars Force Unleashed.

All great games, I actually have like 30 GBs of PSP Games on my Hard drive because I rip all my games from the UMDs and then rip out the useless dummy files to make them smaller because I like to have a large selection of games which you can swap every now and then.

PSP kicks all kinds of ass. Asides from the great list of games it has to offer, *you can use it as your portable NES/SNES/Genesis/Master System/TurboGrafx 16/Game Boy Advance/MAME machine.

    *needs custom firmware.

Little Big Planet on the PSP is incredible. I've never played the ps3 version but the PSP version blew me away. I loved everything about the game, from attention to detail on the graphics to enjoyable tutorial commentary from Stephen Fry. I originally though this was a more of a level creator game with some generic, barebones prebuilt levels, but that's not the case at all. IMO this is some of the most brilliant and well thought out 2D platforming levels i've played in a while and it's a shame that LBP had to come out so late in the PSP's lifecycle.

LBP is pretty good but I wouldn't buy my PSP just for it. I would still definitely get a PSP though because some of the games are amazing. I personally love Loco Roco 2 and Medal of Honor Heroes 2.
