Sony/Nintendo feeling the pressure from iPhone?

Now, there are lots of threads on here debating if the iPhone will threaten the futures of both the DS and PSP. I've read and participated in some of them too.

    Here's a few links:
IGN: 10 Reasons Nintendo Should Fear iPhone
Well the iPhone has nothing to fear from Nintendo/ Sony

Well, i've created this new thread because things have changed a lot recently and in the last quarterly results from each company there are some interesting things to be found. Firstly Sony's PSP sales dropped almost in half from those of the year ago quarter. Ouch. Now that could be partly due to the PSP Go to some extent, but 50% - I doubt that. And Nintendo also saw massive drops, with profits down about 60% and sales of DS down over the year ago quarter, even after the DSi launch. In contrast, Apple posted one of its best ever non-holiday quarters, with strong iPhone sales and iPod Touch growth was high.

Anyway here's the really interesting part: after Nintendo's latest quarterly results, they held a conference call during which Nintendo attributed some of the drop in sales/profit for the DS to the iPhone! They said: “due to harsher competition in the portable arena stemming directly from Apple devices.”

So, what do you guys think?

It seems to me that the global economy is affecting Nintendo and Sony big-time, whereas Apple is posting great results every quarter. But more so, it seems that the iPhone and iPod Touch are competing with these systems and luring potential customers Apple's way. I'm also surprised by how little exposure this has got in the press.

p.s. Spiffyone, What's you view on this? You always lecture us on how the iPhone is a phone and doesn't compete with the DS/PSP as they are different market (BTW, I completely disagree with that - they offer similar functionality so a consumer can choose either device), but clearly Nintendo is concerned and considers it competition.

I still like my FIFA on my Wii :D But I'd like to see it on the iPhone.

I've made this point waaay too many times.

    iPhone = mobile market

    Sony/Nintendo = dedicated console gaming

CELL PHONE'S DO NOT COMPETE WITH DS'!

Everyone has a finite amount of time/money to spend on mobile games. What does it matter if it is a PSP/DS or iPhone? How are they not going after the same market? Isn't that like saying networks and cable do not compete for viewers?

Either way its a mobile/portable device.
    For the Subcategory its Cellular.
    So for iPhone:
    Mobile/Portable > Cellular

    For DS

    Mobile/Portable > Console

EITHER WAY ITS IN THE MOBILE MARKET.

You cant say that the XBOX 360 and iPhone are compitors because XBOX 360 is not a Mobile/Portable device/thing.

It's right that Nintendo are feeling the sales pinch, as I packed up my DS when I brought a Touch 2g, don't buy DS games anymore :)
