wrong...take a look at the thread http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=58110 on the second page....thats my second gen ipod touch with wallpapers and multitasking...and its jailbroken, but no i dont have winterboard.

  3. FYI, I got iOS 4 installed on my 3GS under iTunes 9.2 for Windows, and I didn't even use restore mode. I shift-clicked on "Check for updates", located the .ipsw and let it go to town. Worked without a hitch.

For those having the error, put your device into DFU mode and then shift-click on restore to locate the .ipsw.

That's odd. Multitasking and wallpapers weren't supposed to work on a 2nd gen. You can double-tap the home button to bring up the list of current tasks? (Not just iPod controls)

did doing it this way delete your music/app data?

  5. Nope. It did a straight upgrade just as if iTunes itself had downloaded an upgrade; no loss of data, nothing needed to restore. Took about 10 minutes all told and then I was happily shoving everything into folders. :)

Obviously this won't work if you're stuck in an error cycle (you need DFU mode at that point) but if you haven't attempted the upgrade yet, I can say this method worked flawlessly for me without the need to restore anything.

Is that purely due to having the GM version or being jailbroken? I've heard so many people say Touch2G doesn't support those.

    I'm downloading my iOS4 now :D

EDIT: I got a message saying iTunes will erase and restore to iOS4 and will verify with Apple.

Is this good/bad? Does it mean I lose all my data?

All you have to do is edit a plist file....not sure exactly but I used Redsnow 0.9.5b5 which jailbreaks iOS4 GM and enables wallpapers and multitasking on the iPod Touch 2g.

    Heres proof:

  9. Okay, so it's a jailbreak thing, not that it worked out of the box (which was the question asked).

Well, I don't know why the shift restore did not work for me last night - but tried the shift -update today, and worked as advertised. On to folders!!

    Thanks for the update...

    unfortunatley no...still the same

  17. Glad to help out. I often had trouble using the shift-restore method without putting my device into DFU mode, so I'm glad this one worked out so well. I've already started forgetting all about how messy things were before folders. :D

Meh, I haven't jailbroken since I got the 3GS and don't plan on doing so. Jailbreaking had its place before the App Store, and while there are still a few advantages to doing it, it's just not worth the headache for me anymore. I really don't miss it.

    really.....LAME!!! gaahh

  19. I suspect the YouTube app is probably relatively low on Apple's priority given all of the other higher profile changes in iOS 4.

Depends how much of a headache you consider it. If all you're doing is enabling folders and multitasking on a Touch 2G then you wouldn't even notice it's existence.
