I agree, and part of me isn't surprised by the wifi problems. Like I said, I've had a similar problem with my iPod Touch, and you would've assumed that this would be addressed with the iPad. Since the iPad is so heavily reliant on wifi, this limitation, and I hate to say this, could essentially defeat the products purpose.

What is the typical battery life like on ipad? I've been dying to know. I only heard the standby time is supposedly a month.

In my usage, it's about 11 to 12 hours and that's from a combination of surfing, email and games.

I've experienced the same issues with my 2nd gen iPod Touch ever since getting it (my first and only idevice) in December of 2008. There have been countless times when the signal would drop in the middle of games, or while using safari. The problem has been so persistent (even with the latest Airport extreme) that I developed the habit of putting the the device to sleep before initiating any menu action within a given game or app that might lead to a forfeiture, or loss of data, in the event the the wifi signal had disappeared.

Overall the iPod touch has been an exceptional value, considering all the free and inexpensive quality content that's been available, but the wifi issues combined with poor memory management have mildly rankled over time, limiting it's usefulness disproportionately to what would have been the real cost to Apple for fixing those issues.

It doesn't surprise me that wifi iPads would have the same issues, since not enough customers took the time to report such iTouch issues to Apple, and most complaints about issues with multiplayers games ("connection lost" in N.o.v.a.) were met with a "get 3G if connection stability is a priority" type of response. Come to think of it, buying something new is usually the solution to most of Apple's product limitations. Need more ram for your Macbook in order to use a popular and critically acclaimed virtual instrument ? Sorry, get a Powerbook with a screen and 3D graphics card that you don't need.

If Apple is finally offering decent value on its base models in any given product line, it partly due to overall advances in chip technology (even slow these days is fast, compared to some years ago) allowing them to maintain growth and protect shareholder interests, while increasing profits all the more by lowering App Store quality standards to levels well beneath what would have been acceptable of software products issuing from Apple in the past.

Hey Soup, I picked one up so I've been playing with it. It's good for what it is, but it's by no means perfect or for everyone.

I went over to the Apple store today to get me a copy of Snow Leopard, and got to mess around with one. I, an exhausted high schooler, having gone through temporary hell picking out AP classes and the worst track practice to date, practically fondled the thing for 25 minutes. The browsing experience on it is fantastic. Possibly even better than using a laptop (though your arms will eventually get tired, it's a sturdy and heavy device). The games on it feel great, and if I had the spare cash, I might just get one, but it just felt underpowered. If only it took more advantage of the hardware and software, then I'd get it in a heartbeat.

well as usual they are going to be bloody expensive in europe due to the US1.00 == €1.00 rather bad exchange rate that apple seems to be getting.

My biggest problem with the whole idea is the size...with the iphone i can carry it everywhere, and play and surf or even watch films, whereas the ipad is a consious do i really want to carry this with me item, and if yes why not just take a laptop.

But i will wait and see what v2 brings.
Another point i read elsewhere is that the kindle (nope havent got one) may stage a comeback, with a major pricedrop.

I'm buying it over in the States. €480 for the 600$ 32GB Wifi model. Pretty good deal.

If that's true, Eli probably needs to get some exercise. I sense an obesity problem and less of an attractive trait.
