The Chicagoland area (where some of the TA admins are located) is currently buried. I've got snow a couple feet high at the door to my building. And that's with our snow clearing company working 'round the clock to clear it. My wife and I went out to walk the dog. The snow is a fine mist blasting you at 50mph. It cuts into your skin like a thousand needles. We briefly lost power earlier. Thank goodness it came back on within a few minutes. I do not relish the idea of dealing with no heat in this weather. Thousands of people are stuck on the roads. Especially on Lakeshore drive where the road has been closed due to high waves. Yet accidents on the ramps have prevented hundreds of people from getting off the highway. As their cars run out of gas, these people are abandoning their vehicles to seek shelter. But it's not all doom and gloom. Being snowed in is kind of fun! I even came up with a new Hors D'oeuvre recipe when I got hungry: 1 all beef hot dog A pack of crackers Shaved Parmesan cheese Bottle of chipotle sauce Microwave the hotdog until done. Cut into small slices. Place the slices on crackers, 1 to 2 slices per cracker. Drizzle with chipotle sauce. Sprinkle with Parmesan and serve. Makes ~6 per hot dog. If that sounds tasty, that's because it is! What about you? Do you have any Snowpocalypse stories to share?
BTW, here are some photos out my window. The camera doesn't do justice to the snow blasting out there.
Was supposed to snow 2 feet here and every school closed due to the hype of the snow storm. Right now there's like one or two inches...but who's complaining? Oh and I prefer (grilling? frying? whichever one uses a pan and oil) the hot dog slices on a pan until they're crispy before eating them. Tastes better
It's pretty much the same in northern Indiana. So much snow you cant see more than a few feet. My college is closed tomorrow so now my day is freed up...to be trapped at home There's a good chance I'll play some of the games I've bought over the last two months, finally.
It's hard to get excited about snow when a load of our brothers over in Australia stand a decent chance of dying in about 6 hours time when that storm hits...
I had not heard about that. Did a bit o' googling and came up with a news report: Best of luck to all our Aussie friends! I hope you weather the raging storms no worse for the wear.
Yeah, didn't mean to kill the vibe, I was just sitting here thinking about how weird it must be waiting for something like that to hit you. Enjoy your snow though
Yes well where I live in Australia it is overheating (40 degrees celsius + for about a week now, it topped off at 50 degrees [122 degrees fahrenheit]), very..... droughty and we're preparing for fire season... All the while on the other side of the nation there is a flood affected area larger than the size of Germany and France combined about to be hit by a category 5 cyclone...... -_-
Didn't you leave?! Up in New England, we have three feet of snow covered in an inch of ice. Wind isn't that bad though.
Not getting hit as hard as I thought we would in the greater Toronto area. There's definitely a lot of snow and high winds, which makes for some significant drifts, but nothing as severe as I was expecting. Heck, the trip into work this morning didn't take any longer than it normally does. It's a bad snow storm to be certain, but not a blizzard here, so I'm kind of relieved about that. Hope the folks hardest hit are doing okay; the New England area I hear is getting slammed pretty good, as well as places like Ohio and much of the midwest. Biggie-sized storm to look at the map and it's barely leaving any of the states untouched in some form or another.
Freezing rain in PA. I've been slipping and whatnot. If anything it's at least a change of pace from regular snow.
Getting pelted in my neck of New England but then again that is what it does in New England. Am I sick of snow (for this year) - heck yeah! But I dunno, me shoveling out a few feet of snow seems minor compared to impending storms around the world and most importantly the unrest in Egypt. There is a matter of life and death. Here the debate is how best to cook a hot dog. Weird priorities. shrug
I'm too excited about Egypt to be worried yet. Their army has already vowed not to attack any of the protestors, hinting strongly that they're actually on their side. I think it's great that countries are getting what they want through the power of their own people rather than waiting for another country to invade and assassinate the leader. The guy that lit himself on fire in Tunisia is probably going to go down as some kind of martyr. Not only did he spark (no pun, but... maybe) off the actions that got his own country a taste of freedom but it spread to an entirely different country as well. I hope more follow suit.
I'm wondering if Iran wasn't the initial spark. The people there made me so proud in their peaceful but firm protests. They may not have managed to change the government (yet), but they did make clear the idea that a peaceful revolt is possible in the middle east. Now with Tunisia and Egypt seeding successes in their protests, the wave may circle back around and put even more pressure on the Iranian government. I don't really see it as a matter of priorities. The midwest is buried. Seems like something interesting to start a discussion on. It doesn't detract from the other world events in any way.
Well I like to see that the thread is now including some World events and their impact. I live in New England - it snows. You live in the Midwest - it snows. Those are facts of life. We have had our share of troubles with the weight of the snow as has the Midwest. So somehow since those are things that we should (even if this is the worst year in some time) expect they don't seem as important as the rest of the stuff. I guess I am too hardened a New Englander who gets a little jumpy when the news is filled with oh whoa is me it is snowing, with an aside about potentially huge World News. We don't live in a bubble and yet the news portrays it that way - our area problems are the greatest and worst out there. And why IS everyone calling this a Snowpocalypse? Again - it's winter, we live in areas that receive snow, it snowed! So yes, while it is an interesting topic to discuss the snow and how best to roast hot dogs, let us not forget the rest of world.
