SlotZ Track Editor: Free Track Editor Manager App (now available)

    [App Store Link, Free]

Ok, the preview vid has uploaded to YouTube now at:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jslcuKA5wFY

So, the new toy is.. The SlotZ Track Editor, which will be a free app :)

Essentially it duplicates the track editor that's in SlotZ Racer, but without the game itself. It adds an online track browser though, so you can browse through all the tracks people have been sending and download them to edit or view. There are over 230 tracks on the servers already (some better than others ;) ) and we expect that number to rise.

You can email them and send them over wifi from the SlotZ Track Editor as well as send them directly to your copy of SlotZ Racer to race on them. It automatically launches SlotZ Racer and copies the track across (this requires the SlotZ 1.1.1 update, so we have to wait for that to be approved before SlotZ Track Editor gets submitted).

Another difference in SlotZ Track Editor is that it can store 100 tracks, all of which are editable. It comes with the original 23 tracks from SlotZ Racer built in so you can modify them if you want. It gives you a way to carry around another 100 tracks if you're going to be offline for a while.

It also acts as a way for people to see how cool the SlotZ track editing features are of course, but it's not a 'lite' version of SlotZ, its' a seperate utility app ;)

will there be any way to sort through the large and growing number of tracks, such as being able to rate a track when you download it, and then sort by popularity?

We're going to add extra features like that as the server develops, but we'll probably be making them web based at first. While we were setting up the server code for SlotZ Racer and SlotZ TE's features, we also set up the ability for 3rd party websites (that we authorise) to be able to add search and catalogue features.

Also, the enhancement to SlotZ Racer means you can now do links like this:

    slotztrack://KZTTN

    to look like this

    CLOUD DRIFTING

that will launch directly into SlotZ Racer when you click on them on your iPhone/iPod. (requires the new 1.1.1 update which is going through approval now)

So you can easily set up websites of your favourite tracks with direct links.

because sometimes it's fun just creating stuff and you can create them for friends that do have the game. Besides, it adds functionality for people that do already have SlotZ Racer and if you don't have it, then it shows you how cool it is and why you should buy it ;)

Bravo Zwilnik. There isn't any iPlatform game that is more supported and as frequently updated with big game content than SlotZ Racer.

    +1

Either a "4/5", "5 stars", or "thumbs up/down" with the number of votes/downloads will become necessary very quickly, given how many tracks there will be!

Man, this game just keeps getting better! :D

... But if you can "test" the tracks in this app, isn't it *basically* a lite version?

It appears to automate a test race. You don't have control.

As Salsamd said, the test mode in SlotZ TE is automated (it's the equivalent of running all CPU cars). Rather than do a lite version that gets binned after you buy the game, SlotZ TE is written as an extra for SlotZ Racer that also happens to demo some of its features.

Now we've got the app interlock feature working, we should be able to do more with it, such as adding custom championship setup to future versions or as separate free apps (personally my preference is for a single free utility as long as it doesn't end up being overcomplex in the menu department). It benefits players by being able to add features that would otherwise use memory in the main app and it benefits us by putting a free app out that shows off an element of SlotZ Racer.

Will the track editor be taken out of the full app?;)

    definitely not :)

SlotZ TE just duplicates the track editor in the game with the extra track browser.

Any reason this is a seperate app? I mean the only new thing is the browser, which you could have added in an update, and that would mean I don't have to use up another app slot just for a track browser. Maybe if you still want to release it seperately you could provide an update as well as the free version?

For starters it gives us a free app for people to have a play with the track editor and see how cool SlotZ is, but also it lets us give current players the track browser facilities without impacting the memory of the main game (the browser caches a lot of data like a web browser does, so it's a sizeable chunk). I'd rather our free apps are actually useful to current players as well as encouraging new players.

In theory we'll be able to add the browser to SlotZ Racer in a future update, but this version gives us the opportunity to test the browser and being able to use a separate utility app for the game without having to do a relatively major addition to the game's code and memory footprint.
