I’ve been working on this one ever since Knights and Slimes came out in April 2019. I’m really keen to hear your thoughts. Hope you enjoy it! Anotherkellydown, sebgo and vectorarchitekt like this. If you liked Knights and Slimes you’ll definitely like this one! So when you die you’re sent back to the previous level unless it’s a boss, in which case you start back at the boss if you die there? Hoping to see some friends on the leaderboard soon. monteboyd likes this. monteboyd Well-Known Member Jan 27, 2009 143 22 18 Sydney, Australia http://monteboyd.com/ #4 monteboyd, Nov 11, 2020 Thanks for playing! I'm really glad you're enjoying it. There are checkpoint levels that aren't boss levels too. It's a bit subtle but on the map screen they have a little flag on them. You go back to them, or the boss level, if you die. The checkpoints get further apart the further you get but you'll also find armour in the Airship Fleet area so you'll take more than one hit before your game is over. Here I was thinking my game was glitching. I'll fire this up again once I get some juice in my phone and hope I don't suck as much as my first go at it! EDIT: Oh, and is the placement of flags also randomly generated? monteboyd likes this. ste86uk Well-Known Member May 9, 2012 6,566 896 113 #6 ste86uk, Nov 11, 2020 Is it a pure platformer or any RPG elements to it? What are the controls like to those that have played? I’ve ditched a few platformers with terrible controls. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,064 1,340 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #7 metalcasket, Nov 11, 2020 Highly recommend you read up Jared's article on it. Spot on in that it's an odd (but fantastic) combination of Slayin and Pang Adventures. Imagine an arena based platformer, where you're supposed to clear out the area you're in from enemies, while both avoiding whatever they split into/spawn and environmental hazards. It's super unique. ste86uk, monteboyd and macplash like this. monteboyd Well-Known Member Jan 27, 2009 143 22 18 Sydney, Australia http://monteboyd.com/ #8 monteboyd, Nov 11, 2020 I might need to make the checkpoint thing more obvious! They're not randomly generated - just spaced out so that the challenge increases as you go. metalcasket likes this. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,064 1,340 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #9 metalcasket, Nov 11, 2020 Haha, I think you might! monteboyd likes this. monteboyd Well-Known Member Jan 27, 2009 143 22 18 Sydney, Australia http://monteboyd.com/ #10 monteboyd, Nov 11, 2020 The basic movement controls are unchanged from Knights and Slimes, which is free. So you can download that for a play first if that helps you decide! But the power-ups and level progression in Slimes and Monsters is different. I wouldn't go as far to say they are RPG like. But when you find an item (weapon, armour or spell) then you have it from then on. You don't need to collect it again. Hope that helps! ste86uk likes this. ste86uk Well-Known Member May 9, 2012 6,566 896 113 #11 ste86uk, Nov 11, 2020 @metalcasket you know I spent that much time in the forums I always forget to check the front page. @monteboyd thank you, I’ve just downloaded that and I’ll check it out tomorrow to see how the controls feel for me before jumping in. I do enjoy RPG elements in games but the finding things and keeping them sounds like something that would make it more enjoyable for me. metalcasket and monteboyd like this. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,064 1,340 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #12 metalcasket, Nov 12, 2020 @monteboyd I think I’ve figured out what was confusing me earlier. It’s when you clear a level and end up on one with a flag...and you don’t actually go into the level, but tap on a previous level instead. You can’t actually re-select and re-enter the flagged level. EDIT: Actually it might just be any level, regardless of whether it has a flag or not. monteboyd Well-Known Member Jan 27, 2009 143 22 18 Sydney, Australia http://monteboyd.com/ #13 monteboyd, Nov 12, 2020 Ah ok sounds like a bug then! Thanks, I'll look into it. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,064 1,340 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #14 metalcasket, Nov 12, 2020 Thanks! Just for clarification. It's basically this: Finished off level 3 (for example). My knight's now standing on level 4. I don't hit the play button but instead just tap on level 1 (again, not hitting the play button) on the level select screen. I decide I want to continue playing from level 4, but I can't stand on it anymore. I mean, a simple solution could be just to just stop us from replaying previous levels, but I'm still super early in (level 6) and I don't know if that functionality is there to be able to go back and find any armor/weapons you missed the first time 'round. monteboyd likes this. Am I missing something? monteboyd Well-Known Member Jan 27, 2009 143 22 18 Sydney, Australia http://monteboyd.com/ #16 monteboyd, Nov 12, 2020 Sorry, I need to make it clearer in the game! There's checkpoints on some levels (see screenshot above). You have to reach a checkpoint, or a boss level, to start from there again. If you make it to level 10 (boss level in Airship fleet), then you can replay from the boss level onwards. monteboyd Well-Known Member Jan 27, 2009 143 22 18 Sydney, Australia http://monteboyd.com/ #17 monteboyd, Nov 12, 2020 Thanks for the clarification! It's very possible me and my testers never actually tried this, and instead just kept moving forward. You are meant to be able to go back and play previous levels, so it is a bug I will have to fix. metalwastebasket Well-Known Member Jan 5, 2017 161 55 28 #18 metalwastebasket, Nov 12, 2020 Yeah, to be honest I have no clue why I initially tried bouncing around the level select screen but I'm kinda glad I did now. Regarding the checkpoints, yeah, I think an extra scroll/hint during the tutorial (maybe right at the very end) will suffice. I don't think anything major is necessary. monteboyd likes this. zenmode Well-Known Member Mar 18, 2014 53 16 8 #19 zenmode, Nov 12, 2020 I’m at Lv10, really enjoying it so far. There isn't at the moment but that's a very good suggestion! I was inspired by old arcade games like Golden Axe, Dungeons & Dragons - where you always just had to figure stuff out by trying it. But I agree it would be a good addition for a modern mobile game. I'll explain some of the earlier spells and weapons here: Enchanted Arrow - completely kills the closest enemy. So if it's a slime they won't split into smaller ones. Good for use against a bigger enemy. Lightning Bolt - hits all enemies for one point. If they are a slime then they will split once. Crystal Cage - traps all enemies until you hit them once. Broadsword - simply longer reach. Halberd - longer reach and hits enemies behind you. Battle axe - longer reach and higher reach in front of you. I'll leave the rest until you've progressed a bit further! Anotherkellydown likes this. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
