I respect your opinion but I whole heartedly disagree with you. I’ve played pirates, it’s an absolute grind. I’d rather pay for a fully featured premium experience than deal with the insane grind I found with pirates. I’m glad you enjoyed it tho :)

completely agree with you. PO was easily one of the grindiest experiences I’ve had yet with a card battler. Right there with DoD.

    Honest opinion for newbie...

I have never played STS and truly can’t wait to play it but I am concerned about the comments on the Apple store with many saying it can be hard to read the cards and that can be problematic for new players.

I’ve been vocal here about the UI already and I agree that the issue might be likely that it is a port unlike a few other card games that was made for mobile... So I’m over complaining but now really what to know if I would enjoy it with the challenge of maybe not being able to read everything due to size of text or UI of cards.

    I use an iPhone 8+.

Thanks for honest feedback on if you were new and don’t know may if the cards would the iPhone version be fun or a bit hard to play?

Honestly, it depends on multiple factors.

    1. Since you are new to card games - For me, in StS, I felt right at home. Why? Simply because I have played a load of card battlers in the past - Silent of the Abyss, Pirates Outlaws, Night of the Full Moon, Meteorfall: Journey, Knights of the Card Table and some more I don't even remember. So StS might very well be a much steeper learning curve for you than it was for me. (Especially with the UI issues)

    2. Price Point - It's a premium title. $10. That's not cheap for a mobile game. (Especially in these times) So jumping into it as someone new to the genre can be quite risky. You might dismiss it even before you get to understand it fully. And the issues that already exist within the game might feel a lot more worse to you than they actually are.

    3. Finally, the UI issues - It's not just the scaling of cards, text and UI that are the issues here. There are some other minor ones that pop up here and there that can get annoying as well. (a) Cancelling playing cards is not easy. Especially the ones you don't target on enemies. They float and it's very easy to play them by mistake. Can get very annoying in a tight situation. (b) Some enemies' and bosses' buff/debuff tooltips stay on screen throughout the fight. Again, and annoyance. (c) Relic card contents are overlapped by effect info tooltips at times which make them hard to read completely.

So to sum it up, if you didn't get bored and read all of the above, I would suggest Silent of the Abyss or Pirates Outlaws as a better starting point than StS. Once you get a hang of the gameplay and mechanics and know that you like the genre, you can consider purchasing Slay the Spire.

The original comment that I was replying to was saying that StS makes PO “pale in comparison”.
Nothing about this supposed grind. That’s another point entirely. I get that that would way in to it but it wasn’t what I was talking about. Was talking about game mechanics because that’s the main bit relevant to saying one game “pales in comparison” to another.

On game mechanics, which is what I was talking about, StS does not AT ALL make PO pale in comparison.

The grind aspect is subjective. Just because content goes behind unlocks which take actual effort to unlock, that may suddenly feel like “a grind”. But with the doubler which brings the game to a fair price of something like $8, this “grind” really isn’t all that bad and it’s what you would have gone through anyway in just learning the new mechanics of each character and each location. You guys make it sound like it’s so bad when from my experience, by the time I’m about getting used to a character or the location, I’ve already built up the coins/repute to unlock the next. It could be far worse.

Yes the PO unlock structure sucks. Yes I’d agree with that. I too would prefer to pay the steam full unlock price for everything once. But PO when compared to StS, and I’m talking about gameplay, not monetary or unlock factors, does not “pale in comparison”. Saying that IMO is not at all fair. It’s got numerous other mechanics with deep engagement.

With the silent, the key factor here is dexterity. You can focus more on blocking and support the offensive side with poison. Act 1 is pretty much about dealing damage as quick as possible and that's why people often struggle with her early into the game but thrive in late game (as poison scaling starts to shine). Stocking gold to buy relics that increases dexterity is ideal.
The watcher is totally different. She has so many ways to deal damage quickly. With her, focusing on getting mantra and abusing retain mechanics. She is the easiest character to win Act 4. When she enters divinity mode, it's basically a win

  7. yes Meteorfall might seem too simple. I watched some videos on youtube about it. Bought it. Played it a bit. Got bored quickly. Gave it up. Saw people said they love it. Then I came back to it. Got bored again. This cycle repeats several times. But now I get a hang of it. And it's become one of the games I play every day...at least 20 mins a day. It finally clicks and I can feel the charm.

Unfortunately I've been having the opposite experience. I've been constantly getting to 50th floor boss and getting absolutely wrecked. Aside from Silence who I can't figure out, that's been the case for me. It sucks to keep hitting the last boss and then having some OP skill obliterate your deck which was working on everything right before.

    ---

As for guided access, I don't like doing it because it locks out everything and having to enable / disable it is bothersome for me. I often swipe back and fourth between other apps and messenger, etc. so guided access is more trouble than it's worth. Also, you can't take cool screenshots with it on. iOS still needs to get rid of this bar with an option. Even when taking screenshots (do they not care about this?) you get bars on everything. They could at LEAST remove the bar for screencapping. I post photos / send shots and everyone can see that annoying bar on the bottom of the screen. And if you post it online, everyone knows you're using a newer iOS device if you see the bar. It's such a baffling design decision all around. I like the usage but I DO NOT like the execution. Just my opinion. If you like seeing it all the time that's fine, I don't personally.

Late to the party as usual.
Have been waiting for this to come to iOS for so long that I had forgotten about it completely.
Anyway, its a great port and well worth the premium price tag in my (humble) opinion.
Playing on an ipad air 2 with no crashes after two runs.
    Enjoy!

I truly appreciate your feedback. I’m new to STS and has been on my “want to buy list”
Since I was holding out until it hit iOS.

I have a large backlog of games with limited time to play with a 2 1/2 year old daughter!

I probably have played Night of the full moon more than the other games but I do own silent abyss, Pirates and Meteorfall but haven’t gotten to play much of any of these games. I do enjoy those games but agin haven’t gotten far in any of those games yet.

Thanks again for providing me your opinion!

Seems like maybe I should enjoy pirates, Silent Abyss before I get into STS!

I have to agree that as much as I enjoyed my time with Pirate Outlaws it just felt extremely grindy so despite al the updates I haven’t played it in a while now.

This and a lot of the other premium titles have been much more enjoyable for me because the amount of work needed for rewards doesn’t feel excessive and doesn’t get very boring because of how many games you’d actually need to play to unlock things.

Slay the Spire is better than any similar freemium game simply because I know it has been balanced to maximize fun and value rather than monetization.

It is crazy to me that anyone would rather play a game designed to appeal to your impatience rather than your enjoyment.

I’m all new to this card game niche.
Before I throw 10 euro’s on the counter, I downloaded Nicht of the Full Moon, just 49 cents :)

However it feels like I just blind select cards and throw this on the opponent and win. I doesn’t feel *yet* as a tactical game where you have to think about your next move. Perhaps it will happen later on the game. I’m just at level 3 graveyard. If this game is fun enough, then I’m willing to pay the 10 euro’s for this game.

3rd win. First time playing The Watcher. Quite enjoyed the stance-dancing. Although got a bit hairy near the end.

She feels complicated at start but you grow into her. And with the right cards, combat really feels like a dance. And boy oh boy, she can unleash some series damage if played right.

Holy crap, @Rocksaint is knockin them wins down. So far, who your favorite character. Actually, in an effort to redirect the convo going on, what’s everyone’s favorite char so far? Mines the defect. Haven’t won a run with him yet, but I LOVE his mechanics.

StS on the Xbox didn’t last me long at all (unlocked all the characters in a matter of hours) whereas pirates gave me days and days worth of play time (I used to fly a lot and play it on the plane). To some it’s a grind and to others it’s enjoyable lol.

Given where this comment is placed, it seems to be referring to Pirates Outlaws. While you can say that, I find it crazy that you, nor anyone else has not yet even made a single comment about any actual specific mechanic to PO gameplay vs StS, all the while yet making broad sweeping comments like that still. The more I’m seeing these kinds of comments the more I really doubt the actual play time you guys have put in to PO

I’ve been now playing both StS and PO, and frankly, StS gets quite same-ish on the strat, and PO has been very refreshing to go for a run back in, and doesn’t deserve all this broad sweeping hate. And if it comes down to balance, I see very little to suggest one game (StS or PO) is any more or less balanced than the other.

Lol, in no way is PO designed to appeal to your impatience. I mean, after the doubler, which still makes PO half the price of StS, you literally can’t buy anything for actual progression in the game. How does THAT appeal to ones impatience? I’ll grant that there’s a couple of little extras to buy, but they don’t actually unlock anything major for you rather just a few cards and mediocre relics. These are more like tips for the devs, that seems obvious.

Yeh ok, so let’s say I’ve become impatient playing PO, now you tell me, where can I buy my way out of it if that’s what the game is trying to do so hard? You can’t just buy all of the islands. You can’t just buy all of the characters. They are all tied in to repute which is a progression based “currency”. And if you just played the game you’d see that repute comes on (with the doubler), at a fairly reasonable rate, all the while, you can just enjoy actually playing the game.

My favourite is Ironclad with his strength builds though I have beaten the heart twice with the watcher. Definitely those 2 characters
