Skype Q

Sorry this has probably been asked before, but.......

I've just downloaded the Skype ap for my first gen 8 gig ipod touch. Text chating is great, but will i be able to use voice (voip) conversation if a buy a combined mic/headphone set in my local store?

I thought I read somewhere some time back that only 2nd gens and above could do this
