I think I managed it both ways, I honestly wasn't concentrating on that though as much as I was keeping my speed as slow as possible without stalling :)

I see how active this thread is and wondered, can you actually have a chance to complete if you just download the free package (which they changed to actually have the label "lite" recently).

I'm sorry, but I just hate the nickel and dime stuff. I'd rather pay upfront. With this kind of setup, they can keep coming out with better planes and maps and force you to buy them just to be able to have a chance. But I haven't played online yet so I wasn't sure how much difference the free planes are vs. the ones that are paid.

Wait, AWP! I've only had experience with one other pay-as-you-go app, and it was FAST. And it works differently from SoG. In SoG, you keep the things you pay for.

You DON'T need to buy every plane to keep competitive AT ALL. I think you can play online in the P-40 for free, right? Problem is, you'll be eaten alive. So I recommend a plane. The most expensive one is what, $1.99? ($2.99? forgot). You buy one of those and you're instantly on a level playing field. So: Your excellent WWII dogfighting game costs you $1.99 (or $2.99...). Awesome!

If you like it enough, as I do, and as prolly most of the folks in this thread do, then you might want a mission pack for when you have to play offline. But online play is endless fun, and pretty cheap if you ask me. You certainly aren't "forced" to buy missions or planes; they'd only add to the fun if you really get into it, or you're some WWII plane buff or something; it sure is fun flying them and looking at them. Remember, you have unlimited online play with that far out cheap plane. Go for it!

I've bought several planes and a couple mission packs, making this the most expensive game I have -- but I never at all felt that I had to in order to make it a good game. It was such a good game that I went for those goodies because it was fun to do so. I think it's a good model for both me and for the company; I've gotten a lot of enjoyment flying this plane or that, pretending I'm actually in one or another of them, and engaging in battle with countless other pilots. Many of the most experienced pilots (almost all of the top-ranked) are right here in this forum, too, so you get access to all that skill in the air, and then can come joke about it here. Added bonus.

Thanks. That helps alot. Maybe I'll play through the missions that come with the freebie and then read through this thread a bit to see what planes people are playing with (or if you have some recommendations). As mentioned, I don't want to keep buying the latest and greatest to be able to compete.

It's well worth spending the couple of bucks for a decent plane. I don't know if there is a single "best" plane out there, especially with all the new options, but the red Zero, shark nosed Mustang, ugly "Captain America" P-38 and one of the YAKs are all viable options. The folk at SGN have worked hard to make a great game, and I don't think asking you to spend a couple bucks is either unreasonable or unfair.
If you stick with one of the stock planes you'll still have fun, but I'll have more fun.

Well said Frumius. The most expensive plane is $1.99 now.

Right now I think the Blue Yak is the most versitle, but the red Zero handles the best and is currently my weapon of choice. I also love the grey mustang. The thing with the planes is they all have different characteristics to them in how they perform. We tend to classify them as class 1, 2, and 3. Pretty much all the class 1 planes are on par with each other, it really will just boil down to which one just "feels" the best to you, and which one best sutes your style of play. That's really the fun in buying the different planes, more so than staying competitive. I personaly have bought all of them, even the bad ones. My reasons being 1) I like experincing the game in every way possible. 2) I love picking up on the differences between them all especially the subtle differences 3) I tend to view them as things to be collected from a collection 4) The developers are really responsive, take our input into account and do a great job and I think are deserving of our support.

But if you are new, and are looking for the most versitle plane to start off with, just buy the blue Yak

Lol! I am glad you have a sense of humor :)
Btw, I changed planes, so hopefully its metal won't have the same magnetic properties that forced your plane's nose to always point in my direction!

Sounds good. If I didn't have to worry about finances, I'd probably buy every plane myself. But if just one or two will be enough to be competitive then that's a good thing. I'm fairly new to sims so I'll probably be dying a lot no matter what plane I have.

Of course... without the badge means it's ON (blast away). That's how we can actually compete against each other when we want to keep our skills sharp.

With non-SAB it has to be some other system, like the NICEs or a peaceful fly-by or something.

Yes I know, it's just that NeLge and FAST never wear a badge, so I just pretend they have them on all the time.... unless they start shooting at me:)

Too true. The plane is a starting point. Your skill will provide the bulk of your success, and your skill will constantly improve. As you play more, feel free to post questions here; everyone is pretty friendly and helpful.

Don't get discouraged if you get pounded. Remember you're new and you'll get better. Here's a tip: When you spawn, your plane is flying slowly -- as soon as you spawn, hit full throttle and dive, turning wildly. That way you'll get good speed quickly and be hard to hit in case you have spawned with enemies around you. Don't lazily fly along taking all day to aim (or ween yourself from that as soon as possible), because you'll be a real fat target flying like that. Bob and weave. If a possible target crosses your view, chase it and Downstroy it (unless it's me ;) ). If it's not a good target, keep flying evasively until you do see one.
