Ugh come on Apple! I can't wait for the update, I don't personally like the joystick. It's functional, sure, but I'm craving that relative touch update! After all the Cave shooters, Dariusburst SP, etc.. It's the play control I'm most used to on the iDevices :/
I completely understand why. He absolutely hated the controls in the game. I did too. That's why it's a terrible shame the developer didn't add relative touch from the beginning, almost every review have mentioned the lack of it, and it affects the score, which affect the sales of the game. Here's a link to the review.
Well, every review is just one person's opinion as are ours. I could care less what other people think. It's what I think when I play a game and I've had a blast with this game and have had no problems weaving in and out of bullets as well as challenging sections of the game like the garbage chute. I'll be more than happy to try the RT controls, but still would have considered this the best shmup on iOS regardless. But that's my opinion and you have a right to yours.
But when reviewers and consumers bring up a common issue, like say, relative touch controls, the devs should give it consideration.
I agree that you have the right to your opinion as well, but I was mostly writing to answer Capronissimo71's post, as he wrote that he didn't understand why IGN gave the game such a low review, and reading the review I found it very clear why. Most of the review is spent lementing the poor controls, and I agree with the reviewer, but I've played the Xbox version, so that may affect my opinion. It really is a shame that the Developers didn't read up on how most Shmups have been received which didn't have relative touch from the get go, as every review which mentions bad controls will affect their bottom line.
I agree and I'm glad the devs did in this case. But that review and other opinions made it sound like the game was completely unplayable with the controls provided. That's where I disagree. If it was unplayable then there wouldn't be people in this thread that are getting through the game and, some, like myself that are actually really enjoying it. Anyway, like I said, it's all a matter of opinion. I too prefer RT controls. I just happen to find the joystick to work perfectly fine for me. But if RT controls open the game to a wider audience, and they admittedly are the preferred control options for these games, I'm all for it. This game deserves to be successful. I also wish reviewers like IGN would re-review it if they hated the original controls so much. Unfortunately, few review sites do re-reviews.
Thanks everybody for explanations about the review. In fact, I noticed only the score they gave to the game, and since i saw many positive comments about SM i didn't understand the different opinions.
Have to say I was pretty disappointed with no touch controls, only using 1/2 my ipad screen, facebook instead of gamecenter, can't skip cutscenes, and alot of other things, but I hope this update fixes it. When is the update coming out?
Icade support here too? Now I'm jonesing to see all these great retro arcade games get support. The screen resolution is my biggest complaint and love it otherwise
Well said man... Despite me wanting RT controls, this was still my choice for GotW. Great game is great game.
The Dev said it would be live 'in a few days' when he was on here a couple days ago, but that was probably a general comment. I would say in the very near future, no doubt, as long as Apple doesn't reject it. At least with this update control options will become available and the graphics will be improved, which is huge for me. I want to see this baby look as 'console' as possible. However, it doesn't sound like the screen ratio can be changed, and he didn't say anything about GameCenter being added. I don't know if you can skip the cutscenes in any of the versions.
OK so I bought it and I agree that controls need improvement. If you ever played a bullet hell shoot em up by Cave Ltd. (Like DonDonPachi Ressurection) you know that not having a joystick and decreasing the lag (intertia) of the controls by using relative touch REALLY works better in touch screens even though it means the game will have a different playing mechanic: ports sometimes need to do that to appeal to a bigger audience, and sell more. I am on iPad2 and the plane felt nearly uncontrollable when I stepped in. Other than that I see no faults in this game. It looks good, the story is good, the sound is good, the visuals are watered down but look as good as they can on ios (although when I look at games like Rage, Infinity Blade or Lily I can se the graphics can be pushed a lot further if necessary and maintain the framerate but that is just pushing it). But controls like the Cave shooters (Espgaluda II, DonDon series, Bug Princess, Bug Panic) are ESSENTIAL to a bullet hell shooter of this type on a touch device. You cannot port it emulatying the analog control input to keep the gameplay the same because that won't work on a different platform.
I personally think the controls work well. They did something different and I'm enjoying it. I'm on a iPhone 5.
Request: I am not told if there is any iCade support planned, right? Opinion: I do not care if anyone likes the v. Joystick or not, but I think wanting RT is not a conflict because it would be nice to have a control method one would prefer. My $0.02
