I dont think its that bad. As for saying pick it up on another device/console, many of us dont have other consoles so its iOS or nothing. In my view (not saying i'm right) its not 'that bad' though, its not like its the worst game ever. I dont mind joysticks just prefer relative touch

Bad controls are bad controls. Even if one doesn't own a 360, PlayStation 3, PC, or Vita, it doesn't make the iOS port's virtual stick any less janky.

And for those who genuinely have no other option beyond iOS, waiting for improvements via an update or simply abstaining is always an option.

It just seems like the graphics have already been downgraded to fit our iDevices and there are still issues with stuttering. That is a double negative.

Again, take my posts with a grain of salt. I am simply thinking out loud here and I can't give impressions, only assumptions.

Only someone with a boring or utterly self-centered life would put the word convenience in scare quotes when it comes to gaming ;).

Personally, I don't enjoy beating my head against the wall. Which is why I stopped playing the Vita version. So far I'm having a far easier (and enjoyable) time with this one. Feel free to call me a liar if you want, but your response would be far more interesting if you took your head out of your ass and acknowledged that other folks can have different but still valid experiences.

BTW, I don't think the controls are janky at all. And I appreciate the fact that my fingers are off the play area.

@SumoSplash: No stuttering on my iPhone 5.

That's good to hear. I would hope that the sacrifice in appearance would be justified so that the game runs perfectly.

Some trusted opinions going in different directions. The thing is, each opinion is probably accurate.

If you're carrying an iPad or Mini, you're carrying a bag. If you're carrying a bag, you've got room for a 3DS or Vita (specifically Vita in this case). Ergo, the convenience argument becomes moot.

The Vita version is objectively better than the iOS release. So are the 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions for that matter. It's Jet Set Radio all over again.

And even if you're rocking nothing but an iPhone/iPod for the day - it doesn't change the fact that the virtual stick in the iOS release is incredibly janky. And any Cave title could adequately scratch that shooter itch in much better fashion.

It seems like everyone complaining about stuttering and bad controls is on a "lower end" model. No one seems to be complaining on a 4th gen iPad or iPhone 5. I'm not a frickin' idiot...I said the controls were near flawless in my first impressions. I had no difficulty avoiding bumping into anything. The game is fine as it is. Can anyone with a "new" device chime in and tell me they're experiencing problems with the controls? Maybe that's the problem.

Whatever the case, sorry for this: If Super Mario Bros. was released for the very first time on any platform EVER and it happened to be iOS, you guys would probably complain about every little godamn thing in the entire game. Bloody hell, when will people stop trying to "fix" everything and just ****ing play games the way developers intended?

    ^You having a bad day ?

The games a shooter, the vast majority of shooters have relative touch controls, not having this for this game is a bit of an error. Its like platforming games, touch screen controls work on iOS for these types of games not tilt.

Same for shooters, its a given it has to have relative touch. If Cave released a game without relative touch that thread would also have lots of people complaining about the controls

As i said its a 7/10 for me, i do like the game, find it trickier with traditional joystick controls. Love the graphics, story seems pretty good, very happy this has come to iOS. I reckon in an update we may get alternative controls so i'm looking forward to it if that happens.

After Limbo and now Sine Mora i'm excited by the quality of games we seem to be getting at the moment. Sine Mora 'could' be a bit better with the controls but its not a huge show stopper. Still a good game

I've been having a pretty stellar day actually, thanks for asking. :)

This isn't pointed at you specifically, but between my posts earlier in the thread and the developers response about why relative touch controls are not used, me responding would be useless.

No offense psj...you know how much I respect you, but if you believe the game is a 7/10 then you believe the game is a 7/10. It's not up to you, me, or anyone else to make the game a 10/10 by changing the developer's vision. If they want to risk getting a 7/10 by making the choices they've done, then all the power to them. People need to understand that, and sadly with iOS gaming being all about updates and way too generous developer interaction, it seems like any and everyone wants something. Why can't we just accept games for the way they are?

How many times over the last 3 years have I written variations of the above? >_> Never change, iOS gamers. Never change.

I tried this on five devices today (iPad2, iPhone4S, iPod Touch 5th gen, iPad mini, and iPad 3rd gen) and it worked like a charm on every one. The only thing that st-stuttered was me.

I want devs to get lots of sales, then that means sequels/other similar games, more ports etc. A game which has alternate controls (or dare i say even Game Centre which i'm not a fan of but i know lots are) means more people buying it which i feel is good for us. Theres people on the fence due to the controls and even because they use Facebook and not GC.

Granted it may be the devs 'vision', it could also be dare i say it a bit of laziness, eg facebook and not game centre. How often do you see that?

Again i dont dislike this game, looks stunning and i'm looking forward to seeing more of these huge end of level baddies spewing out tons of bullets in later levels.

I suspect the people complaining about stuttering are the people who can't enjoy any game ever unless it's a flawless 60 frames a second at the very least. Also, you do realise that Cave shooters on iOS have the bullet patterns completely redone and the difficulty scaled down, yes? That if you just add relative touch to a shooter and change nothing else it usually makes it harder, because you can't be certain of making the same precise, tiny movements?

There certainly are some things I'm seeing that indicate the devs rushed the port a tad, I admit (that screen showing Xbox Live, ouch!). And I do sympathise with the people who'd like relative controls. But Darius Burst is nothing next to this - the patterns aren't even close, to say nothing of using slowdown effectively. I hate it when people say virtual controls are always inferior to buttons but I'm not pretending they're the same thing, just faster. Making them fit would be work, and what we've got in the meantime is still a damn good game.

Oh, and to anyone calling this shallow - screenshot of you S-ranking arcade mode or shut up, please. It's not as ludicrously complex as some of Cave's scoring systems, no. Still far from simple playing it properly.

Does this game have upgrades/stats? A money system?
Not interested in arcade-style shooting games where you have to rely on "powerups" in each level to get temporary upgrades.

Not negating Dariusburst, which I love, but even Dariusburst is nothing next to G-Darius, excluding updated graphics.

Really, judging on what I have seen, nothing compares to Sine Mora, at least the console versions.

The way I see it, it's is much like the broader view of IAPs on the App Store. TouchArcade just has a tiny fraction of iOS gamers, hardcore or not, and the "Elite" members who hate IAP (me included) don't really have a voice outside TA. It's been proven time and time again that people do want IAPs, and me or Gabrien or who-the-hell-ever crusading against them is not going to do squat. What am I getting at? Outside TA...do casual gamers, or even hardcore gamers who are drooling over the fact that Sine Mora is on iOS really give half a turd that Game Center isn't being used or that there aren't alternate controls?

Come on. I'm not new to iOS gaming. I've been playing shmups my entire life. Again...I'm not a stupid ****ing idiot and I know how beneficial relative touch controls are. For the love of God, whether or not I want them to be here...they're not. I accepted that and I'm loving this godamn amazing, beautiful, flawless (on iPad 4!!!!) title for what it is.

Oh, and you guys who refuse to get over that Xbox Live screen, it's already been addressed and will be fixed. GET.OVER.IT!

See, this is why I said I didn't want to address the comments in this thread. I'm done here. :) Goodnight folks!

So this is decent, but overall a bit disappointing. I am happy to support the devs porting a quality shmup to iOS and have no regrets about my purchase. It looks good, but not as jaw dropping as I had hoped. As I expected, controls and lack of proper leaderboards/achievements are the biggest shortcomings here. If you want excellence in a side scrolling shooter port, Dariusburst SP is still the way to go. This is not terribly far behind, and I hope it does well enough that the devs consider some updates with improvements. Overall, I'm sure my expectations were probably a little high. It's a fine game and I recommend it, but it doesn't quite reach the top tier of iOS shooters for me.

I am really enjoying this. I was afraid that I would miss relative touch, but this seems to do the trick. And it looks great on the iPad Mini. Great release. :)
