Showtime has put together an intricately-designed marketing campaign (don't stop reading there ) for Dexter's fifth season. It's a unique, extensive alternate reality (I messed up the thread title) game that goes across the Internet and elsewhere. Custom sites, phone numbers, iPhone apps, Facebook, Twitter, Craigslist, etc. Stealthily, the game started as part of a Comic-Con promotion using an iPhone/Android app that took players across the five cities the game was playable in to a kill room where the (fake) "Infinity Killer" had recently killed a victim. There, a link to a site listed below was found. For details of that, go here: www.8inblood.com This is a really great way to immerse fans into Dexter's fifth season. Showtime has a group of people playing along and communicating with players as characters that are a part of the game through many social networking service and others. You can even chat or PM real people taking the roles of these characters if you find the right info. Other forums and fans are having a lot of fun playing this. I will advise that players who get disturbed easily not to join in, but "Dexter" fans among others will enjoy it. In fact, many of the public sites this is being done through would ban such material if it wasn't part of a marketing campaign. Comically, Apple has pulled an app created by the fake company "Sleep Superbly" that's related to the game. I guess they didn't get the memo . Still don't get what this is? Imagine a crazy serial killer willing to communicate and share what he's done with others, an investigation, a shady company, and countless other characters spanning the Internet and beyond. All fake, of course, but happening across multiple sites, etc. as if it was real and as if there were real characters. This seems really fun and unlike anything else. Since the game has only been going on for around a week, there's still enough time to play and catch up. You can catch up here: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=30032&sid=109087268db1ab2b4c7a87c3c1a9bfe9 There are some surprises for "Dexter" fans in the links below. Dig through all of the links here: http://www.serialhuntress.com/#fbid=u4r4r07Lndt http://sleepsuperbly.com/?fbid=uMHOc1F9XdC http://unpersonated.blogspot.com/ http://messuausedauto.com/ http://controladdicts.com/ You can use hints or the thread of users who have been playing this for a short amount of time to found the Twitter accounts and phone numbers, etc. that are part of the game. Let's kill this as a forum!
Anyone who wants to play should post here to say that they're in and we can piece together hints and contact whaichever characters we can. I'll post which Twitter accounts and etc. you should be following that belong to very responsive characters. You'll even get an 8-step personal "sleep study" through Twitter. Join here if you want to play: http://forums.toucharcade.com/group.php?groupid=415 We'll keep discussion and what we find in this thread, though.
Oh, whoops. I'll try to edit what I can. Thanks. Hopefully a mod can edit the thread title so it appears "Alternate Reality" instead of "Augmented Reality."
Sounds interesting, I love ARG's. I took part in the Halo ARG on bungie.net before Halo 3 came out and had loads of fun. Unfortunately, I never really got into Dexter, so...
Seems loosely based around the show so far, other than the mature elements that many violent cable network shows share. You should be able to play, though the storyline may continue on into the show. I'm not sure if they're planing that we end the investigation before the season starts or what. Heck, maybe the Infinity Killer is going to be in the iPad version of the Dexter game. They do use an iPad in some videos.
Cool, I guess now I can keep this thread updated . Later tonight, I'm going to follow the presumed Infinity Killer and Sleep Superbly on Twitter and begin my 8-step "better sleep" process. I might ask the presumed Infinity Killer a few questions, too. I'm expecting a creepy, vague answer . I'll post all of the Twitter information for others playing later. I think all of the players are trying to figure out who the Infinity Killer's currently unidentified victims are, so I'll begin that. The eight "Control Addicts" steps can begin by sending @whocontrolsyou #ctrlpledge Find out more info by following them on Twitter: www.twitter.com/whocontrolsyou Anyone who completes it and creates a testimonial will have their file personally looked over. Fun. Don't miss out on where this goes. The small amount of people following that account indicates that we should really be able to communicate with these characters.
