Hey devs, just played Doodle Army 2, and I think that game has a solution to the "aiming while firing/ not firing" problem. At the very least it's something you could look at. Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel Check out the right analog stick. It's used for firing. Here you can see that if you move the analog stick around a little bit, you can aim around without firing. it only fires when you move further away from dead center. It seems to work well for Doodle Army 2 (a multiplayer game) so with a little tweaking, I'm sure it could work well for you.
Hey I suggested it too! About the Doodle Army 2 thing, it sounds great in concept but I couldn't really get the hang of it. Maybe it was the fixed control sticks or something, I just found it too fiddly trying to be that accurate with my thumb. Really you shouldn't have to concentrate on a games controls much at all.
Then we all thought of the same solutions. Download the game (it's free) and play with it a bit. Don't get me wrong, it definitely needs tweaking, as I left a review on the AppStore stating. As it was I had to move my finger pretty far away from center before I started firing. But the base concept is solid. I'm sure with playtesting and polish you'll find the right level that will fit the pace of your game. In my view that would means something a tad snappier than Doodle Army's mechanic, but that'd just me. You should have a better idea of what to tweak after playing it.
Just so you guys know, this game is now confirmed by the devs. to be coming to iOS. Their kickstart thing, not actually sure exactly what it is (I think it's like a preorder in the form of a donation/pledge...) was a success, and if (when?) they reach their second goal, they'll bring it to a couple other systems.
I would definitely be interested in this on the iPad. Please either release an iPad version or universal app. I don't want to be stuck playing something with great visuals on the tiny iPhone screen.
Do you have a link? This would be another awesome addition to a fast growing collection of platformers.
Hmm, 'researched' kickstart a bit; it's a site that helps prototypes and other things (like indie devs.) to raise funds and support their (usually) creative and/or innovative ideas (like NTTE). Cool. EDIT: @arta sorry, i didn't see your post, ill get a link in a sec. EDIT 2: http://tinybuildgames.com/were-on-kickstarter-help-shape-ntte (Also, there's a mention about the "shut up and take my money" on the page ) EDIT 3 (LAST ONE): http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1296948465/no-time-to-explain-indie-game
WOW! All they needed was $7,000, and they've already raised over $12,000, yet, there is still 43 days left to pledge! Insane!
Good, ive been playing this on the internet so ill be wating for this to release to buy it. Wondering how the controls scheme is going to be like on iOS, touchscreen suits the game better than a mouse and keyboard
Now couple hundred bucks short of $20k. Since I'm here, a short update: We're playing around with several different mechanics right now. Feels like the dual thumbstick control scheme is a bit too heavy for a bite-sized experience that iPhone gaming is. Any suggestions are highly appreciated.
How bout a Left & Right buttons on the bottom left side of the screen and a Attack/Action button on the bottom right?
