Yeah, you have to purchase the seafarers expansion to be able to play the campaign mode, othewise all you get is freeplay mode. The seafarers lite is the extra boards beyond the first two or three, the other locked boards have to be unlocked by completing campaign levels.
Thanks for your replies. It looks like I'll be buying the expansion then because I really want to get onto the campaign and seafarers. @PKA 30+ times!! You've probably tried everything but make sure you place your houses by the high frequency rolls tiles. First 6 and 8 then 5 and 9 then 4 and 10 lastly 2 nad 12. Try to cover all die rolls so you get some produce each time. I think the key is to make sure you get lots of produce rolling in as you cant do anything without it. Go for the extra points like longest road, biggest army and victory points, harbour master. Also place some houses on the coastal intersections for better exchange rates at the ports. Good luck keep at it you'll crack it! Pitty this isnt a universal app!! Also I'd like to be able to continue my game on my iphone when i'm away from my ipad.
ugh... make it 36 times. Just when I think your there, then one of the other player goes out with a bunch of victory cards. p...sing me of. And Yes.. using those most rolled numbers.
ok.... this game is cheating. 1. Traded 4 sheeps for 1 corn and didn't get any. 2. I have my house between 11, 6 and 4 and a double 2 is thrown. so I should have gotten a brick.. and it's not doing that either. wth!!
Please. The game doesn't "cheat." That's absurd. Here's what's far more likely: 1. You messed up the trading screen somehow. Easy to do; I've done it myself. It's not a very friendly user interface. 2. The robber was on the 4 hex.
Then it's a bug. 1. I watched it clearly. I saw the items moving, but did not count. It only subtracted my sheeps 2. There was no robber. (Other combo works though 3+1, but 2+2 does not) btw.. If I am going to make it past the first map, and you loose on the 2nd. Do you have to start All over again? or do you start with the 2nd map.
PKA I feel your pain! Upgraded to seafarers now cannot beat the first map yet. I seem to have extraordinary bad luck, roll a 5 when the robber is on my 5 so short of wood for all the game. AI players refuse to trade for anything I want. Always getting the knight which costs you 3 cards only to get one back! AI seem to get victory cards, Sean won with 4 victory cards last game, I didnt get any. I read the devs response that there is no cheating in the game engine and I believe them its just difficult when you get such a run of bad luck. Anyway I'm sure I'll win next time, dam this game is addictive.
But ... but ... you also said you seem to draw a lot of knights. Why aren't you using the knights to move that robber before you even roll the dice? Historically, this is pretty common in Catan games. The computer players tend to offer pretty crappy trades. See above. Use this to your advantage. Also, keep in mind that getting three knights has the potential to give you 2 VP ... that's one-fifth of the total needed to win. It sounds like you and a few others in this thread just need a bit of practice and repetition (the same as with any other new game). And you can forget about getting any good bargains from the AI players; it's far better to build on a port and trade with the bank for the rest of the game at a 3-to-1 or 2-to-1 ratio. I hope you stick with it; it's very rewarding to win a hard-fought Catan game.
Gotta agree with TheDukester here -> you may not ever get to 100% wins on this game, no matter how good you get. I'd imagine even with the most basic AI there, you might not break 70 or 80% win percentage.
I'll keep trying.. but it's frustrated, if you have 9 points, and Dean is going out and jumps from 7-8 points to 10. I don't like him... The lady is ok. she wants to trade once in a while. Dean, is a scrooge. lol
That's almost right, but not quite: You need to have at least three knight cards and have the most knight cards. If two players are tied for the most knights, then no one scores the bonus points.
ooh. Guess I'll keep them, instead of playing them.. Thanks for the info. Thought that I have read all the rules, but I guess not all of them Gonna try it again tonight. Do you know btw, if you you loose in the 2nd or 3rd map in the campaign, do you have to start all over again with the 1st map?
It's the other way around: playing them is what you want to do. You gain no benefit at all from keeping them in your hand (other than keeping the other players guessing as to what cards you're holding). But to gain credit for having the largest army and the 2 VPs you need to have played your knights to the table. +++++ And, no, the campaign does not require a "re-start." You just go back to the same map you lost on.
Done it!! Kept buying and playing knights for 3 points total. Captured 2 harbors, sheep and ? for better trading. Finally won by joining my two settlements together for a 13 length road. Excellent. Really enjoyed this game as it flowed a lot better and also 'cause I won! Now on to "Ore for wood" Thanks for your help everyone what would we do without touch arcade?
For anyone who's not 100% sure on the rules could check the catan website(http://www.catan.com/gamerules.html) for complete rules, these really are helpful for understanding the game. Just make sure you look at the Seafarers and the Basic game for rules that pertain to the ipad version of this game.
It's getting better... Did notice if I don't have building that is connected to a 10 but to 8 I will get a lot of dice rolls with 10. So I had a building connected to 10 and not 8 , then it's throwing all 8's. but I am getting better.
Right. My bad above ... I've been playing a lot of boardgames lately, and I think I was remembering the "tied score" rule from another game. The other thing to remember for Catan newcomers is that both the bonuses in the base game have minimum requirements. For Largest Army, it's three knights; for Longest Road, it's five roads/ships.
