Sell my soul... err... iPhone 4, for a Galaxy SII? Already own an iPad 2...

I'm thinking of splitting down the middle and getting the Galaxy SII.

    My rationale:

    * I love the AppStore and its offerings, and i'd still be able to download whatever I want on the iPad 2.

    * Resale value for the iPhone 4 is still pretty high where I stay, especially since it's a Factory Unlocked 32GB model. If I wait for whenever the next-gen iPhone releases to upgrade, the iP4's value will obviously go down.

    * The Galaxy SII seems to top over the iPhone in most departments, aside from the plastic finish and OS (debatable). It has a much better camera for still and motion pictures which is pretty important to me, honestly.

I've used the phone and found it to be extremely attractive... thinking of taking the plunge seriously, any thoughts/opinions?

As long as your ios gaming desire is fullfilled by your ipad 2, then I see no reason why not since you seem to prefer the Galaxy over the iphone.

Can't say I blame you S2 is a great phone, in my opinion probably the best one you can buy right now I've looked at it a few times myself and considered a contract my only fear is an S3 appearing after getting one.

But I would say this phone is probably the reason Apple is being so desperate to lock Samsung out lately they really do need an Iphone 5 to compete with it.

Buying an Android phone and using an iPad is a good idea, I think. But a Samsung? Seriously?

I follow news about phones plus I regularily read reviews, I pretty much know what's going on. I still wouldn't buy a Samsung if there's any alternative at all. And there are plenty of alternatives of higher quality out there.

I'll have to respect your opinion but still disagree with you, at the minute I really don't think there is a better phone and I like Samsung and think they make good quality equipment.

I tend to like samsing equipments, but I just can't stand their phones. It's probably somewhat of a 'leftover' feeling from years ago, when their phones were actually crappy, but also partly because the design and manufacturing quality of their phones isn't the greatest.

Balu - i'm wondering how much of what you've posted on this thread is from experience in using past Samsung mobile devices vs. your actual knowledge / usage of the Galaxy S2?

I definitely believe that a manufacturer like Samsung would have the capability to pump a lot more of their resources, r&d and cash into developing a more solid phone; that seems to be exactly what they've done with the S2. I have seen/held/used the original Galaxy S and the SII for equal amounts of time (roughly 5 minutes each) and was pretty impressed by what I saw in the S2.

After looking up no less then 7-8 reviews both on and off YouTube, it's clear Samsung has a winner on its hands here. I understand your stance on Samsung's phones would be skewed based on your past experiences but it does seem they've learnt their lessons...?

In any case, thank you (along with tek and thethinice) for your thoughts... i'm about 80% convinced to make the switch so far.

    I'd hold off.

The iPhone 5 is around the corner (sept unveiling - sale by October)

There's a few rumors, too: dual core, 8+ megapixel, 1080p video, 4in. screen, etc.

Then there's iOS 5 which brings better features: Siri, voice, new notifications, twitter integration, etc.

I'd just wait and see, honestly.

To be honest with you, a factory-unlocked iPhone 5 will probably cost me a lot more than the SII... i'm looking at trading something tit-for-tat right now. Waiting for the iP5 will not only make the iP4's resale value to decrease, but will mean I have to shell out a lot more $$$ a few months down the line compared to if I trade in the iPhone 4 for the Galaxy S2 right now.

Of course the above snippet might be true but, the fact that I already have an iPad 2 and hence am able to enjoy all the apps on the AppStore is what's causing me to sway towards an Android-based device. Best of both worlds?

Knowledge, I've got quite much about it, I've read several reviews before commenting here. The build quality, according to them, is really above average and I'd recommend it to someone switching to it from some lower-end device, but the build quality of Apple devices is usually extraordinary, and after that, the Samsung might disappoint you.
I haven't yet used it - planning to, though.

Well, since after using it you were impressed, I'd say, go for it. People have different needs in a phone - I'd hate to use a phone with a a screen as big as this, but this isn't about what I want. :>

Well, their phones' quality is getting better and better, and they probably did use their best materials for their high-end model...

Also, one thing to consider. Depending on what you use it for, you might want to get a phone with a physical keyboard? It really is convenient in my opinion, and there are some high-end Android phones out there with a keyboard, if I remember correctly.

Apple should announce the Iphone 5 specs already if it's similar to the Ipad 2 it's very nice and quite an upgrade but still below the s2 specs wise. Only other real contender to appear anytime soon is the Nexus Prime.

I'd say the S2 is a safe buy for a while I've been looking at some more reviews myself and I've got the temptation to get one myself again. Ultimately I think the S2 wins on hardware and Apple for the minute wins on software but there is a lot more potential freedom with android as well.

I'd quite like to have a the best of both worlds myself.

Well what other alternatives are there haha, I'm looking for a new phone myself in the next 2 months, so if anything better comes in mind, just post a reply.

In the mean time, here are other phones I've looked into...
    Rumored specs:
Nexus Prime (Super Amoled HD 4.5" display, 720p res screen, dual-core 1.2-1.5ghz dual core processor, Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, 1gb ram, 5mp advanced camera w/ LED flash, autofocus and 1080p video capture)
Droid HD (4.5" display, either qHD or 720p res, 8mp camera 1080p recording)
    iPhone 5/iPhone 4S (8mp camera, A5 chip, retina display)

The phones listed here are also rumored to be released on October

Thanks to everyone for sharing their thoughts and opinions here.

I went to a Samsung showroom the other day and spent about half an hour in-store fiddling around with the Galaxy S2. Mind you, I had cash in my pocket and full intent of buying it that day, while deciding to offload my iPhone 4 after fully transferring my contacts, etc.

As the story goes... i'm sitting here, typing this out with my iPhone on the desk in front of me, and a good amount of money saved towards my iPhone 5 fund. I decided to save up and buy an unlocked (non-contracted) iPhone 5 when it gets released, just like I bought an unlocked iPhone 4 when it came out. I also actually preferred having a slightly smaller phone in my hands as compared to the S2 which I felt was just a bit too "large" for my day-to-day tastes, as gorgeous as the screen may be.

ShadowsFall> what you posted is exactly the reason why I didn't buy the phone: it would just be a "2-month" purchase where I would buy the phone at MRP, then end up selling it for a 30%+ loss. I paused for a second to appreciate just how fantastic the iPhone 4 still is, and why I didn't really need to get the S2 for such a short span of time.

I instead went out and bought a new screen protector and Carbon Fiber textured film for its' back. Looks bad-ass and will help me hold out the next few months... heh.

Case closed. Temptation can sometimes be overwhelming (and frankly, pointless). Glad I held out.

Any reason you don't want to sell the iPhone 4 and buy the iPhone 5 under contract and hold onto it for two years? I've been using the 3GS since it launched and despite the fact that the battery is slowly reaching the point where it will no longer hold a charge it's been one of the most fantastic products I've ever owned. It's not like something becomes obsolete just because a newer model is released, if it weren't for the lack of storage I probably would have held onto my original iPhone until the 4 came out.

Windows Phone 7? You could sell your iPhone 4 and buy 3 of them, and still make a profit. New devices coming soon with Mango so carriers are clearing old stock.

Sounds a lot like me I keep getting temptation to buy certain gadgets myself and rarely do because truthfully I probably have everything I need. The only gadget I'm really lacking is an ebook reader and I've been eyeing the new kindle I think I'll probably pick one up later this month just to get rid of the itch.

I do really like the S2 but I've wavered from getting it myself at least twice I think it's because deep down I know someone is bound to top it soon even if it's Samsung themselves.
