I am on my schools robotics team and I have actually used some physics, and trig. Not ALL of what we learn in school is useful right now but some of it is. Mainly the 'useless' ones are simply building you up for a harder thing which you might actually use in life. If you want to be a doctor, math doesn't really matter all to much. If you want to be an engineer then youll need to pay attention to math and physics. Some things in Bio and chem you dont really need to know for life unless you want to go into careers using that, but every now and then some info is useful. As for history, it should be taught less. The only thing I see useful from that is the fact you may learn from other people's past mistakes.
This might not be a bad idea. Certainly, the US public education system is broken beyond repair. I have also noticed that the teaching ranks are populated by more than it's fair share of droolers. If you are serious you may end up saving yourself some time.
maybe they don't get why either other than some "values" that they may have or something they've heard from others. I'm not a parent yet, but I find most parents are very closed minded when it comes to their children, no-one can tell them what they're doing is wrong and yet they can't ever defend why they believe in one thing or another. Anyway, maybe you should ask them why? But if you do, you should also have a few points as to why your side has it's benefits. Its good, when debating, not to take a side, but to believe all sides are true or could be true and what you're trying to do is figure out which one is right through debating. So try and understand both sides before approaching them with the question. At least, they will think you're prepared, even if they're not.
AP? Only Euro History, but that's not gonna help me in the field of video production. @ dogmeat, I think the only point they have is that I won't have my HS Diploma
I don't know how many irresponsible, heavily drinking, stupids I've met in my time, who I find out later are training to become a sylvan learning center teacher, or "just getting my teaching certificate".. For a profession that should be respected as much as doctors, teachers sure are treated like a pile of shit. Imagine if we invested the same $$$ in teaching and schools as we did in medical or dare I say it, military? If the US spent all of it's militaries budget educating the masses instead of educating in killing and distruction, who knows, maybe we'd be more prosperous and definitely less hated.
But school isn't just about the actual information you gain, it's learning how to interact with others, how to deal with deadlines, and everything extra curricular. Yeah me too Well thats obvious, but you don't learn anything vital to succeed during that time. But how are the government going to have an effective system to encourage people to learn at home and get the type of people they need to for a functioning society? Of course you forget most of it, but to learn enough of each subject for it to become useful, you will end up forgetting lots, but if they decided what we would all learn from the age of 5 and shape us to our jobs, then there would be serious rights issues Well "random crap" to someone that wants to be an artist is vital information for a doctor
Ahhh, history. I have a different take. I have always found it useful to learn about the great minds of the past. The ancient Greeks had a capacity for logic and rhetoric that is very relevant today. The problem starts when you ask an inferior mind(many instructors) for insight into the superior one.
Well, on the history subject, I think it's a useless subject. We are learning things about the past that half of the people don't even care about. I much rather spend my time on Science or Math.
learn history when you become an adult and have extra time for such things. when you're young, you should be "absorbing" useful "how-to" information.
"But how are the government going to have an effective system to encourage people to learn at home and get the type of people they need to for a functioning society?" people have been learning long before anyone knew what a government was.
girls are for boys. I like women, and am married to one As for the other guys post above this one, hasn't anyone considered general education is just a formula to "build" us all up to a "spec" that fits the governmental "mold"? We're all just cogs in their machine, and if we're not all designed the same way , the machine goes crazy.
I actually find it interesting (european history). But not much use can come out of it immediately. But I see what scott is saying. As for teachers pushing out crap and using the book incessently, I actually have a great GREAT calc teacher. THE BEST. Hard as hell but that's the good part. He can actually teach but he gives the hardest tests I have ever seen. But he's cool and he give 50% curves to get our grades back to respectability. BUT when the AP test comes we'll have the edge over people with easier teachers. So bad teacher =/= hard teacher
I was the same way until I became older, the older I get, the more fascinated I am with how people used to live and behave, what they did, etc.. I don't care so much for history history, but the simple history of how people existed facinates me, another thing I absolutely hated as a kid was the 1900's - 1950's. I'm so obsessed with the 20's, 30's and 40's now. I also like brussels sprouts ( great sauteed! ) Tastes change.
No I'm saying you guys seem to really want to get out of school. I think it's pretty easy but I don't complain because I'm just enjoying the parties and stuff.
So I'm guessing you dont do shit in school and half ass your way through it by taking algebra essentials
