I loved Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (both the movie and the book) - I prefer the book (Hunter's cut of word really speaks to me), but the movie is an absolute masterpiece (love the wide angle shots - something new to see every time). I would really love to get a hold of both Burroughs trilogies - I have an idea that his total fiction would be extremely interesting to digest. I believe that is the same CD I have is it this one? ------------------------ Masterchief On to Hostel - I thought the first piece was more entertaining than the second - I wasn't a big fan of the torture scenes (gore isn't what I find to be the most horrifying part of a horror movie), but the sense of scale and pace was excellent through out the first part. It felt like a really well written short story put to film - suffering only from extended torture scenes and an extremely long introduction section. The second one I felt was a cash in and lacked any sense of cohesive direction. As for SAW - I also really enjoyed the first one - but each subsequent one (I watched until part 3) felt like it was put out with cheaper production values and less story to go on. Although I am not really one for underserved sequels and would rather have one-ups that are extremely good than series that prove to get terrible by the 3rd film in (Pirates of the Caribbean anyone? )
@Duke Floss Yes, exactly this CD. @Horror Movies: Finchers "Seven" totally burnt me. I went into his trap so opened eyed blind that I refrained to watch any "victimizing horror movies" for the next 4 years or so. I became so sensitive to violence in movies, that most R rated movies of the decade just passed me by. Since then also the Serial Killer topic, which became mass media by that time is completely off for me. This along with the torture porn I refuse to watch. (Including most of Tarantino`s work, Esp. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, which I just find completely tasteless. He spawned a whole new series of "Sex, Violence and Fun" videos. No, joke this was a German 'Underground' VHS Series that rose in train of Tarantino´s early works. Though french director Vincent Cassel made movies with that 'specific touch', before Tarantino made it mainstream. But I admit "Inglorious Bastards" is a small Masterpiece. ) Which includes also the SAW and other movies, which MasterChief so elaborately defended and he might be right, I am in no position to argue, here. It would not be the first time that Marketing-Guys raped a movie. I just hate movies where (psychological) violence is acted out as just another means of fun or game equal to Bowling. This is so different from say Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Essentially the Leathermaks guy is a victim too. At least a tragic charakter. He just cannot act any other way, to regain is little peace, as perverted as it may be. can you toss a few more names around? I shamefully admit I cannot name 2 french horror movies that are not society related. One is Eyes Without a Face (1960) "Les yeux sans visage" And the often quoted "Them" Ils only made it into Pay-TV in Germany, I never had a chance. brutal, socially ambitious / ambiguous /gangster movies, like La Haine I can name en mass. Unless you think watching Novelle Vague isn´t horror enough.
I haven't seen a tonne to be honest mate. I can name a good few. Ils (as you said), Martyrs, Haute Tension, Calvaire, Dans Ma Peau, La Horde, Le Packe, L'intereur, Irréversible (not horror per say, but absolutely horrific content). These are the very best of the New Wave.
no problem, if you not the last pro of french horror. you don´t need to know everything, just the right ones I´ve seen Irréversible, too. Yes, not horror but QUITE disturbing. And really advanced camera work. But I have not seen it again since it came out at the silver screen. IMDB spits out "Freaky Friday" with Jamie Lee Curtis when looking for "Dans Ma Peau" BTW: most of the french movies mentioned don´t date back longer than 2007, so this seem to be a recent delevopment.
It's the French New Wave my friend. I forgot to mention Frontiers. It is definitely one of the best. Dans Ma Peau - Maybe you can try "In My Skin"... I haven't seen it yet, it's in my DVD box haha. You're welcome. He was and still is a momentous figure in cinema and the development of film language I can understand why some feel underwhelmed after watching the film. It can have that effect. However, I feel the film is definitely one of the better modern horror films. Its shrewd use of cinematography, combined with the stark landscape evokes the concept of the Outback being a metaphorical secondary character that looms over the lonesome protagonists. Wow. Great defense But I feel that you have misinterpreted my use of the term, "torture porn". I do not see the term as a type of genre of film, but rather an explanation to the pleasure derived from the films' predominant audiences. The predominant audience who watch the SAW franchise, only watch them to seek pleasure out of watching an even more horrific scenario than the one preceding it. I think that the first instalment in the franchise showed promise, but as the franchise has continued, its ambitions have waned. Despite this, the franchise still occasionally shines, with unorthodox narrative devices. But the majority of its audience and its marketers have chosen to reduce its ambitions to a mere showcase of traps, and this has continued to a more banal level as the series has progressed/regressed. When I watch films, my main line of focus is not something trivial, (like the traps in SAW) but the hope that there will be an intelligent narrative, gorgeous cinematography, and multi-dimensional characters, as I am sure it is the same for you too.
Also known as The New Extremism/ New French Extremity Gaspar Noé pretty much pioneered it with Irréversible. It's amazing to think that film was made in 2001/2002. The special effects and cinematography are mind-numbing...literally.
That's the ticket mate, extremity. I can't wait to see Enter The Void. It's coming out on Region 1 DVD sometime this year.
Andrei Tarkovsky is one of my favourite directors. Mirror has to be in the Top 5 most beautiful films I've ever seen. The juxtaposition of fire and water, the long silences and dream-like pace. It's a very unique film from a gifted filmmaker.

It sounds like a huge, more avant-grade progression of Irréversible, with a lot of hallucinations chucked in One of my friends managed to get tickets to see it last October at the London Film Festival. I was so jealous, as I couldn't get time off to get up there to see it. He said that Gaspar Noé was actually there for a Q&A and a filmmaking class!!
IMO: Soul gets a little creepy at certain part of the game. Especially when the damn spirit pop out to your screen.
I absolutely love Noé. I find him thrilling and a true genius of the film making World. I understand why everyone may not think that way, but I find that he has a style that takes real intelligence and thought to truly appreciate (not saying that I'm a boffin', just on his wavelength). P.S - Totally agree Grumps!
It was only aired once on TV and I missed half of it. Maybe I still have a copy in my VHS collection but I cannot remember. I was enjoying Tarkovksy already with 14 or 15 when Stalker was first aired. Already back then his pace, formalism and semiontics already got me. Though I did not know how to express that at that age. It was just different than anything a else I´ve seen before. He is one of my most favourite, too. Totall missed on the New French Extremism / New Wave. Well you can`t be everywhere. BTW. As I follow the Apps people mention here, Soul seem to get the prize for the most scariest iPhone game.
