Dead Space is doing a pretty good job of creeping me out, those scythe arm things and babies with tentacles man. They just creep me out
I never played Half Life 1, but in Half Life 2 those headcrabs used to scare me. Especially in the tunnels, and the creepiest part for me is probably when you go past the graveyard and you are following some guy (can't remember who he is) in the town area were there are burning headcrabs jumping out at you and those werewolf type creatures that run as fast as f*ck. Some parts of Fallout 3 are also quite scary, especially when you have no idea that there is a creature right by you and it suddenly jumps out at you.
I forgot about SA-X... That was creepy too. I'd always be too impatient and leave early, only to find out that it was still there. That was a great boss fight though. And Bioshock got me quite a few times. It was mostly in the funeral home, with the mourge scene and the splicer breaking the coffin and attacking, not to mention the few ghost scenes. I'd also like to add the entire level of Ravenholm from Half Life 2. The zombies always seemed to come out of nowhere, and their yelling was pretty creepy (but nothing compared to a re-dead). Gotta live the tons of buzzsaw blades throughout the level, though.
Yeah I totally agree with those. There were parts in Bioshock though when you KNEW the splicer on the ground was going to jump up from playing dead/sleeping, and even if you shot it, it wouldn't react. Kinda pissed me off since they did it like ten times.
Just picked it up for my little bro but Batman Arkham Asylum isnt too scary so far but just a generrally dark and creepy atmosphere. EDIT: Scariest game i ever played was fallout 3 cuz i got stuck in like vault 106 with a sliver of health a broken lead pipe. I was still really new to the game and it was 3 am(realtime) nd every second i had crazed surrvivors jumping out from nowhere nd chasing me aroud the vault tryibng to eat me.
Oh man.. I've heard about Vault 106. I've never actually been in there due to red ring, but it looks awesome. I'll check it out as soon as I get a new Xbox. Btw, any good horror games on the iPhone? The only one I'd really consider a horror game is Fallen EP-1, which I found to be a pretty awesome game. The Resident Evil games weren't scary, and Zombie Infection was more of an action game than anything. So are there any other good horror games on the iPhone?
It's almost impossible to get engrossed in an iPhone games. I played Nazi Zombies with my headphones in, and while a great game, still laughable. Bioshock definitely creeped me out towards the beginning. At the very start of the game, when you're in the elevator and a splicer tries to break in, creepiest thing ever. The innocent 60s theme just adds the freakiness of it all. Oh, and the voices of the little sisters. *shudders* Wears of quick, though. I'm psyching up for Dead Space 2. I hear it's the same ol', same ol', but considering I've only had my Xbox for 6 months, every single sequel is like a new franchise to me.
Got to go with System Shock2 on this - that game still gives me tense chills to this day (a decade later).
Yeah, Bioshock's opening was really freaky. Only rivaled by the morgue and dentist scenes for me. I've actually never played the original Dead Space, so I might just wait for Dead Space 2. I played the demo and it was awesome, but for me it was more of a gorey shooter than a game meant to scare you. Then agian, that might just be the demo, which was referred to as the "Dismemberment Demo", so I'm sure the full game must be much creepier. Still, I'm going to have to find it hard to rival the river where you have to face The Sorrow in MGS3.
Bioshock was excellent and the atmosphere was sufficiently creepy however I never got scared playing it... I think because it was to action orientated and suffered from no actual death. Great level design though.
I'm trying to make the scariest game ever for the iphone at the moment... Hi, I'm actually in the process of trying to make the scariest game experience for the iphone. Stumbled across this thread when seeing what else is out there... So any tips, or requests welcome...I'll go make a proper thread in a minute asking for what people find scary. My game 'Horror Box' (current working title) is a point and click horror themed game, along the lines of the story telling style of the 'Saw' movies. I'll post on the forum once the game is a bit further along, check out the blog with video links at http://stormystudio.com/blog/
@ draper3000 you MUST build up tension and suspense. maybe have violent/gory moments? i'd like to see something different, like no dark environments or zombies, since they're way too commonly seen and becomes kinda cliched. don't follow Saw too much - it must be original.
Yeah bro, gore is a MUST in almost any good horror game. It doesn't have to be too overkill or anything, but it always sets the tone better to see someone with their guts spilled all over the place as opposed to just a dead body that you'd see in something like the older Call of Duty games. The number 1 thing that really gets me though is that "Oh crap I'm gonna die!" feeling. Immerse the player. Make them feel like they're the one in the game, as opposed to controlling some character other than themselves. You want to make the player actually fear getting killed, rather than just think "Aww... bummer. I died. Gotta start over." You want them to freak out when they get killed. Make danger EVERYWHERE, with a few seemingly safe spots that turn out to be even more dangerous.
To the contrary, violence and gore completely kills the horror element in a game or movie for me. I just view those as unnecessary elements in an "attempt" to make things scary, but end up simply being violent and not scary. Psychological horror is the deepest level of horror. You might jump when you see a bloody zombie or whatever, but when mysterious or unexplainable things happen, the fear in your mind lasts a very long time and gives you the chills. Ideas used in movies like the Ring or Grudge (poorly executed, but nonetheless good psychological horror idea) are what I would call truly horrifying, because they have no violence, no blood, just very freaky phenomenon. I've yet to find a truly scary video game however. Maybe it's because I don't use headphones or a dark room or whatever, but when I play games like FEAR or Doom 3 I find them just bloody and violent, never scary. Those slo-mo moments of the girl's silhouette walking past you with those eerie sound effects are all child's play for me. Maybe I'm too used to Japanese horror.
I wouldn't think gore completely kills horror, but it certainly doesn't add to it. slasher movies suck terribly. Japanese horror is good though [: because it's just plain weird
horror thanks for the replies over what makes a good horror game...I've started a thread on the topic along with discussion about the game in early production...hopefully it will scare you all to death...maybe not quite to death but close to it...teeter on the edge of your life type stuff.. link to the other topic. if you want to continue the discussion...thanks.. http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=75148
I believe Resident Evil game is kind of horror , at least for me, Currently still playing on PS3 Lost in Nightmare , very good game indeed
