The Thief series has plenty of scary parts, but nothing can top Shalebridge Cradle from Thief 3. It took me days to get through that level... not because it was overwhelming difficulty (although it was hard), but because I couldn't handle that much fear in one sitting. I also tried to play with the lights off. I lasted about 15 seconds.
Did anyone ever try that Hysteria game for iPod/iPhone? I never picked it up but it seemed alright... was it scary at all?
Silent hill 2, and 4 were freaky. It was the mix of creepy audio that sent chills and then the controller vibrating to draw you in. Eternal Darkness on Gamecube was freaky at times as well.
FINALLY got my copy of Bioshock (it actually arrived pretty quick, I just took a while getting around to order, Batman and Fallout 3 are taking freakin' forever, though). Lovin' it! The atmosphere is amazing.
Silent Hill 2 is the game that got me hooked on the whole Silent Hill franchise. I didn't think The Room was as scary as the other Silent Hills, though. I wish Fatal Frame was available for PC...it's not, is it?
零:月蝕の仮面 (Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse) - one of the scariest survival horror games ever Call of Cthulhu - one of the most "realistic" and deepest survival horror games ever, so much dialogue based on the Lovecraft novels; only downsides are it's extremely hard that many can't finish the game without cheats, and there's a bit too much walking to do in-game
I felt the need to bring back this thread for one reaso: I found something to add to the list. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. I decided to pull the game out again, and as expected, the majority of the game isn't scary at all. There is one part, though, that just flat out scared me, and that was when you first meet The Sorrow. I'm sure that anyone who's played this before can attest, as it could be considered the scariest moment I've ever experieced in a game. I can honestly say that. Anyone who hasn't played this game really should. This is undoubtedly the scariest thing I've ever encountered in any game, and it's a fantastic game otherwise. Also, I've been considering getting a Fatal Frame game. My friends were suggesting it as well when I asked for a good horror game, and I YouTube'd some gameplay and it seemed pretty creepy. Which one's the best to get?
When you're playing a game that's not supposed to be scary otherwise, something like that is pretty unexpected, and therefore scarier. Also, when you're actually playing the game and taking control over Snake, you feel more like you're in the action, making it that much scarier. And, like always, it's a matter of personal taste and opinion, but I'm sure at least someone agrees that that scene is downright freaky.
Super Metroid. The level where you had to turn on the lights and that creepy ghost thing showed up right on you always freaked me out.
Sounds pretty creepy. Creepiest thing I can remember in a Metroid game was fighting the Nightmare boss in Metroid Fusion... holy crap that thing was freaky. And a really hard boss. I've spent months on that one boss in the past. Crap, just reminded myself of one of the creepiest bosses ever at 2 a.m. Ehh... I'm not sleeping tonight. A couple of things that scared me quite a bit as a kid: The zombie things in Metroid Fusion. Idk why, but they really creeped me out. Now I stand there waiting for them to respawn so I can shoot them and watch them fall apart. Good entertainment. The stupid re-deads in any Zelda game, but particularly the ones in Wind Waker. That scream is just... chilling. Still gets me, although they don't bother me AS much. The ones in Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask weren't as bad. Those skeletons that popped up in Hyrule Field when it turns to night. It scared the CRAPP out of me (I even had to add a second capital P to CRAP for emphasis) when I was playing it the first time. The fact that my N64 was in the basement at the time definitely didn't help anything. I think I just ran across the field until morning. Either that, or I dropped the controller and ran. How were these games rated E... Every single game listed above is rated E.
Britney's Dance Beat. The level where you are dancing with Britney Spears. Wait a minute. Dear God, that's every level! The horror........ The horror........
Dead Space and Fatal Frame take the cake for me....I can't play 5 mins of Dead Space without getting freaked the f**k out. Fatal Frame literally made me piss my pants when I was younger. Holy Baby Jesus that game was horrifying.
I was scared of Half Life 2 when I was young. E: sonetimes I didn't have te courage to play further when I paused it on a creepy moment. I played Metro 2033 in the dark, and that game is very scary too . Awesome game btw! Definitely one of the best shooters I've ever played! E: I wad quite scared during the whole game, so much weird scary things and so much suprises, once there was this monster that came trough holes in the ground and ceiling and it jumped right in front of me and I was so ****ing scared I almost ran away.
Seeing headcrabs in vents always scared the shit outta me in Half Life 1. Metroid Fusion's SA-X was nerve racking as **** too. You saw it many times outside of its view, and if you were seen, it would play this crazy music while you ran for your life.
