Everyone (well, almost everyone) likes a good scare once in a while. And it's almost Halloween. And I like horror games. So I decided to make a thread so you guys can put the scariest games you've ever played/seen being played. Put as many or as little as you want, I just want some good recommendations for new games since I've played almost every scary game I can think of. If you want, put a quick description of why it's scary, but you don't really have to. It can even include flash games, apps, etc. if there's one that actually scared you. Here's a list of a few that got me at least a few times: Clock Tower: The First Encounter [SNES]: The actual game cartridge was only produced in Japan, but someone made a translation, so it can be played in English on an emulator. The concept of a posessed person in the house trying to kill everyone with a pair of hedge clippers may sound hilarious, but in practice, it's extremely scary. The reason for that is there's no weapons throughout the game that you can kill this guy with, and he just doesn't seem to die no matter what happens to him. Add the fact that you seem to be the only one that didn't get killed (as far as I can tell) and you got one scary game. Resident Evil: Code Veronica X [PS2, Gamecube, Dreamcast]: By far the scariest Resident Evil game, and I've played almost all of them (just missing Dead Aim and the Outbreak games). The prison level alone made this the scariest one in the series alone, it keeps me on the edge of my seat every time I go in there. Probably because of the moaning and scraping of zombie feet everywhere you go in that level. Freaked me out. Resident Evil 2 [PS1, N64, PC/MAC, GAME.COM(lol)] : Everyone knows this game. Or at least I hope so... This game has a few outstanding moments that really scared the crap out of me. Namely the hands busting through the window. You need to play it. Doom 3 [PC/MAC, XBOX] : Being the last person inside of a huge facitlity full of zombies and demons and hellspawn really can be quite freaky. Being the only survivor on Mars really doesn't help things either. Chzo Mythos [PC Freeware] : A series of four freeware adventure games about restless souls, posessed items, and a bunch of other stuff. Download at fullyramblomatic.com
Silent hill 2. The most depraved exposure to media I've ever had. Deeply, disturbing on a level where not even movies have gone.
doom 3, in the dark, 40" screen, surround sound turned way up. that's how i played it when it first came out. didn't 'scare' me, but it sure made me jumpy. also, silent hill with the same setup.
F.E.A.R. 1 and 2. I first played both of them at around 3 or 4 in the morning locked in my room. Everyone else was asleep. I was surrounded by darkness. Seriously scary game, not other game has made me feel legit scared.
I don't remember if it was scary or not but I think it was kinda creepy, anyone remember the game called "Eleventh Hour" many many many years ago lol
I have to completely agree with you guys... I've never played those games, but I've seen some of them. Holy crap on Silent Hill 2. I didn't get time to mention a couple others before, so here we go again. Exmortis [Flash game] : Yes, I actually listed a flash game up here. It's just the scariest flash game ever made. Things pop up and scare the crap outta you, there's a creepy plot and back story, things appear and disappear, and it's just scary at points. It's like one of those movies that has the thing that pops up at you at the end, but it's interactive. And cool. I think I'll break down the Chzo Mythos games since I gave a really quick and kinda lame description due to my shortage of time. 5 Days a Stranger [Freeware] : Not exactly the scariest in the series, but some pretty freaky stuff happens, mostly towards the end. Watching everyone get killed one by one without explanation is pretty intriguing though. 7 Days a Skeptic [Freeware] : Probably my favorite one in the series. Takes place a few hundred years after 5 Days a Stranger. Alot freakier than the first, and alot more violent. Especially when you go in the room with a bunch of body parts laying around (you'll see what I mean). Also, getting chased around by dead people (you'll see what I mean here too. just play it) is quite creepy. Definetly one of the best in the series. Trilby's Notes: [Freeware. Again] : Taking a bit of a step away from the rest of the series, this one has you traveling back and forth between the normal world and the dark world which scared the crap outta me the first time I saw it (because it sort of pops out at you. Not because I'm a wuss). It also has you travel back in time to a degree to learn the back story of the Defo Curse and why things are happening and who the Tall Man is. 6 Days a Sacrifice [I'll let you take a guess as to what this is] : Definetely, in my opinion, the creepiest in the series. Control a helpless dude as he goes from normal human to immortal being made to serve an evil purpose. It also explains what wasn't answered in Trilby's Notes. I'm just going to put one relative to the time I was playing it (I was like 6 at the most) and because of it being rated E which no game like this would be rated now. Heart of Darkness [PC, PS1] : Ok, at first it doesn't seem too dark of a game, until you actually get to the playable parts. The first level alone is pretty creepy. I think the thing that got me when I was playing this is that the shadows formed into a sort of... thing that attacked you when you walked close by. And I was in the room by myself when this happened. Then I got to a part where this shadow dog thing (as I referred to it) came and pretty much just ripped the kid that you played as apart. Then I just ran like crazy. Didn't play that game for years. I played it again pretty recently and I almost beat the game. I think the E rating is quite misleading. I'm also going to have to put the Silent Hill series up here. I havn't played that much of the series, but what I have played of the first one is pretty creepy. Seems like instead of being really a scary game like Resident Evil, which was the game of the time, Silent Hill went for shock value. And it worked.
Trilby's notes is sooo creepy. I actually screamed the first time it shifted to the dark world. But what a great series.
I almost did too... I just went flying out of my seat for a second. Probably the scariest moment in the series for me. Then again the whole 6 Days game just freaked me out.
Darkfall scared the shit out of me. Nothing really scary in the game but the fact you could be murdered by another player or a group of them at any point in time had me spinning around checking my back nonstop. Also gave me terrible nightmares while I played it. I actually don't reccomend it unless you want a grind game where all you do is pvp.
+1,000,000. Silent Hill 2 too was not only scary (Pyramid Head actually gave me nightmares), but disturbing, moving, and deeply sad, all at the same time. Probably my favorite game of all time.
I can't belive any of you didn't list Siren. You don't know true horror in video games until you play that game
