Very hard to take good screenshots of games, I have about 50 that I took as I played through the game and none turned out as good as their screens.
no swipe? Having been a HUGE fan of the first Samurai (definitely my favorite game for the iphone), I am greatly disappointed that the swipe controls were not brought back as an option in Samurai II. Additionally, I have noticed that the game freezes after I complete the first level, and I am unable to progress past that point. I hope an update comes out soon, as well as swipe controls so I can use my lightning fingers of death in Samurai II.
yeah, but madfinger could've taken more using the iphone simulator on the computer, possibly using print screens then selecting the best-looking ones.
Right, I know what's causing this to crash on my iPad, and I have a workaround... Basically, it crashes at the end of the first level if you have taken the first upgrade for health before the last big battle of the level, and before the final save game of the level.... If you don't upgrade you health it works ok, upgrade your health and it crashes for me every single time.....
I agree , I thought the controls were the fun part about the last game, everything else was rather uninspired, but the controls gave it a fun learning curve and are SOOOOO much more engaging than virtual controls. Seems like graphics are really all this game has going for it with swipe controls gone.
Yep. I'd really recommend the dev's to check out Ninja Gaiden series and Devil May Cry series for references if they ever decide to make another Samurai game. The game is mostly hard because the controls aren't intuitive enough. Fast paced games require extremely precise controls which this doesn't have. And dodge is so glitchy it screws up the flow of a fight. Sometimes when you roll into 3+ dudes, you get stuck, sometimes you teleport behind them, this is really apparent the later you get into the game. Tips for people that are having trouble: Don't fight mobs, roll around and fight 1v1. Try to go for archers first, those always seem to land the killing blow on me =/
Looking at the video and screenshots, I was about ready to pluck down $2.99 for this one. However, after reading the TA review and some of the comments here, I think I'll pass for the moment. Love a decent hack and slash, but hate when there's a lack of variety and the controls don't sound promising. May with an update and/or sale.
Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry is exactly where this series does not need to go. There's enough anime-style combat in gaming. Games where the samurai sword-fighting looks and feels right are rare on any platform. In any event, not to take dumaz's line, but anyone dreaming of gameplay as big as Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry at $2.99 is smoking the funny weed. As to the controls, I simply disagree. There's nothing glitchy about the dodge, and to say that they ruin the flow of the fight seems bizarre to me -- dodging is what keeps the combat fluid. It's telling that you are recommending that people stick to 1v1 fighting. The way I play the game, it's fast attacks and dodge all the way: the controls support that type of gameplay without a problem. For me, at least . @awp69: the game has as much variety as you can expect from a game of this quality selling for $2.99. This is easily the best hack-and-slash on the platform.
'anime-style combat' what the crap are you talking about? You clearly haven't spend 100's of hours on those games. It's not about the story or visual style, I'm talking about the way characters handle. In those games the character's animations and moves all flow extremely well, but the controls are pretty much 1 to 1 so you can cancel out of any move into another without janky animations. Eh... its kinda hard to explain, go check out bayonetta demo on 360 or ps3 if you have those systems. Similar style game (dev made dmc) with really fluid and satisfying combat. Teleporting around and/or snagging to enemies/environment when dodging is 'glitchy' in my books. Also 40% of the time I double roll because of the 'queuing' system. Don't get me wrong, I still think this is the best action game on the system. Just get rid of the 'queuing', fix roll, add in the 'swing blood off sword' animation.
I have actually gotten stuck in the landscape and had to restart more than a few times from rolling. I would say near 90% it works great.... but every now and then - stuck / roll into an enemy and just stop dead on in front of its attack. As for the button ques - the attack animations are what to watch for. This isn't a button masher, I get the concept of combos and getting buttons ready after rolls or hits perfectly. Patients in the button presses are the key! So is the ending different on ronin mode? I thought I had selected it while playing through the first time, but apparently I did not so I am going through again. If it isn't different I am crying fowl play on the dev! TEASING $%#@!s
I spent a lot of time with Devil May Cry on the PS2; Ninja Gaiden I never got into. Devil May Cry 1 and 2 were tons of fun, but the action is extremely stylized (funny you bring up Bayonetta); what distinguises the Samurai series is that the combat feels grounded. Sure, Daisuke pulls off some pretty amazing moves, but they seem within the realm of the possible. For that makes the game all the more satisfying. Perhaps "anime-style" is the wrong term for games like Devil May Cry, but that's the way it reads to me. But again, I only do double rolls when I intend to do them. I also happen to like the queuing system, so I don't think we're going to agree on anything. Okay, maybe we agree on one thing. .
Madfinger, you did a brave job posting your thoughts on the front site review. And I'm really sorry for the pirating issue. That seriously sucks! People would already get a fantastic game for a joke of a price, steal it instead and are often complaining about the lack of good games for their systems.... really annoying. I wish you good luck with sales! Left a glowing 5-star review.
I call it passion and stand behind it. You put so much effort and love into an indie title, which smokes most of the big studio games in the pipe. And then you read every fart of Angry Birds and Doodle Jump on the front site. Now, you deliver this iPhone masterpiece and the review starts off nice but ends with a bunch of (mostly) strange complaints leaving the reader with a very mixed feeling. I would be pissed too after all this hard work, believe me. But it's their site, their taste and their rules... so, let's trust in sales.
