aaah the joys of RNG. does using the farm to make rare recipes help? i think for the rares it's the kind of thing that would be so easy to add 'buy rare recipe' if we had IAP, but it's more in line with an old school RPG fishing minigame where you could just get realllllllly unlucky... it was a fine line between making them too easy to collect and too hard (when I was beta testing and trying to catch some of the rare fish... 'are you SURE this fish is even catchable?!' *moments later catches fish* 'oh. well damn.') it's possible we could add an item to increase the rare %age chance for the coming update (it'll take a while tho, we've been really swamped in bugtesting and fixes and the horrors of administrative stuff)! yeah, we'll be betatesting for android hopefully soon! we considered trying f2p for android but decided on just sticking with premium/no IAP/no ads so probably not going to make any money on android haha
There are lots of completionists out there - and you are right the line for challenge vs frustration is a fine one. I think I would err on the side of getting things though, just a touch, because otherwise complaints are generated. I personally think you got the mix pretty spot on. If its too easy, people get bored. So dont listen to the naysayers too much, but dont ignore them either.
Oh, thanks for the input! I don't see it as naysaying, most people have been really constructive and it's so good to have feedback of all sorts to know what we can work on fixing in future. One of the quests required something like 30 goldfish (must have been having a bad day when I scripted that LOL) and that got reduced extremely quickly when beta testers yelled at us, haha... so we definitely are open to suggestions. Having said that, there are times when people do just get extremely unlucky. I think adding a rare that ups the rare %age chance even more after you beat the kraken might be a good idea though? or maybe a farming speed upgrade? thoughts welcome, will have to see what's feasible
Great game! However, a male character that looks make would be nice. Right now, male & female are really the exact same. Minor, but would be nice.
Thanks, and cheers for the feedback! definitely something we'll look at going forward as I did see that mentioned a couple times--we're also hoping to add a little more main char variety for the next project -- not like full-on customization or anything but maybe in the vein of Ultima 7 with a couple diff skintones/hair colours. maybe a BEARDHAT? ...hopefully at some point down the line we'll be able to hire extra help and have a more complete customization system in future games. despite trying really hard not to, we went over deadline for RWAIF it was definitely a labour of love--we wanted to create a little world in your hands that evolves as you play the game, that hopefully feels more bustling and alive as you populate it with more characters. that's something we would like to expand upon even more in the next project. there are so many things we wanted to add, like a deeper, more complicated plot (scripting all the quests and the pacing took an excruciatingly long time even with a fairly straightforward plotline), more subplots, pirate dating sim... ;d

What about free to start on android? let people play for a set amount of time and then having an IAP to unlock the full game. I'm not a fan of IAP either but I think this is a fair way to do it. Let's people test the game to see if they like it plus on android helps stop some piracy.
iPad build still in testing to properly support older devices, but it will be this month and hopefully sooner rather than later.
Ah, we've been considering this idea! It's between that and a split version model, ie one 'lite' version with ad revenue and one premium version (it matters a lot to us about not alienating our core fans who prefer a seamless, non f2p experience). I guess 'LITE' could include a 'no-ads' one-time payment to transform that version into a premium app. Will be interesting to see how the ratings vary on each version. So far our experiences with premium users have been outstanding.
I'm think I'm stuck at the very end of the game. Defeated Kraken, all side quests complete, but Iam at 107/108 fish caught and can not complete the Collect all the Fish Story Quest. The only things that are not unlocked and bought are the Rubber Ducky boat (need plans), and the Fishbone Hat (locked). Not sure how I missed those as I have seemingly finished everything except catching the last "fish". The last fish I need actually looks like a humanoid character with spines on its shoulders. It is large sized and is apparently caught in the Depths. I have spent some time fishing for him to no success. I'm beginning to think there is a glitch somehow with the story quests. I started playing on v1 and have played on the 2 newest updated versions as well. Currently I'm on the latest version. No one on the island has any dialogue to engage in and only the last quest to catch all fish shows. 107 of 108. Where did I go wrong? Please help! Thank you.
@Septim: The last fish you're looking for is a quest fish, the relevant quests (Tentacles Ahoy -> Yet more Tentacles) should start by talking to Alvid. If that's not working, please PM me and I'll try and resolve that in the upcoming iPad patch. By the way, for the Universal build, I think we've more or less finished moving everything around that needed to be moved around, just making sure nothing is broken now.
