For the RPG players out there, how important is it for you to be able to name your character in an iPhone or iPad RPG?

Not personally that bothered as long as the names 'sound' like theyre from an RPG. There was a KRPG last year which came out and all had RPG sounding names apart from one which was Kevin or something similar which was bizarre.

    Random Names

    Thanks for the reply.

The random name generator I have coded does not include "Kevin" as a choice  But I will review the other combinations to make sure nothing normal or mundane is in there.

    Implementation

I have separate fantasy names being generated for both Male and Female avatars. Still haven't added customization, but I have checked the names for fantasy authenticity.

Are there any other must have features regarding customization that are need in an iOS RPG?

Customizable names is a nice perk but primarily of interest is skills customization and an additional nicety is the ability to customize character appearance (items visably changing characters). My preference is being able to take a generic starting character and meld them into a mage or knight by level up and skill attribution alone (I prefer not to start with an initial "class") because it feels more organic.

Can you share any further details of this RPG? Is there info in upcoming games? Thanks in advance.

    More Info

I am moving my iPhone game Brigands and Barbarians over to the iPad, but as I move it I am greatly expanding the game play and core RPG rules as well. The world map is larger and scrolls just like a Google map on the iPad. Also combat is more like Ultima III or an early Final Fantasy, in that you move your avatar on the battle field against the monster.

I just added the feature to advance the ability of you choice every other time you level up. So far I have starting Avatar Profession and pre-made names. There are five starting Avatar professions, but no limits on weapons and armor use, however spells are limited.

More info are the iPhone version here -> Zenfar

    Random Names

So I have the first and last names as separate random fantasy names, different groups for male and female. It seems to work well. I have whole names to choose from instead of just random letter combinations so that I don't get anything goofy.

    Cheers

It depends. Is it a story based rpg (the main storyline being between the characters), like most JRPG's? Also, are the given names crappy? I don't like hackneyed pseudo mythical tough guy names or Japanese engrish ones.

    Two example names are

    Justalyne Galin - Female
    Strom Greybeard - Male

It is not as story based as most jRPGs, no cut scene with large eyed girls crying, more western than that, but the combat is similar in style to jRPGs.
