Thanks Stroffolino! There are preset intervals in between which the runner speeds up. Reaching a new interval results in a score mulitplier and the runner slowing down a notch. This may also regard difficulty in some way: during the Beta we received some feedback that due to the changes in the background graphics of the levels, lighting effects etc. it can be tempting to take your eyes off the track, which usually results in a Gameover.
