OK guys and gals, as I let slip in the other thread today... Version 1.2 of Rogue Touch had been submitted to Apple quickly after 1.1 went live. Well, Apple just did us a favor and approved it this evening!

This update is not as substantial for new items, but it does have some major improvements to fast-play mode, some bug-fixes, and includes some nice little features that had been requested and discussed right here at touchArcade over the past week. Added a couple more new items and another secret character to round it out and you have the following:

*** Note: Please finish your current game before updating to version 1.2, as the saved game will be deleted during the update process :)

    Version 1.2 contains:
    * Altered sensitivity for fast mode double-tap so that it is not triggered unintentionally (tap really fast now!)
    * Fast Mode running now stops right at doors, and at hallway intersections. Even easier to play!
    * Sorting of inventory. Items are grouped automatically as they are picked up.
    * Added Default Zoom level, adjust it in settings from 25, 50, 75, 100%
    * Searching now slightly less punishing :)
    * One new weapon: The War Hammer
    * One new secret staff!
    * Several Bug Fixes (black hallways, x-ray vision problem, app closing between levels, vorpal weapons)

This version is live, I just updated my personal iPhone through the app store icon. iTunes itself shows the old version, but I'm sure it'll straighten out soon. As always please ask if you have any questions and I will do my best to help you out!

Finally, Version 1.3 is already in development, and we will talk about the *new features* coming later this weekend! :D

I still can't decide whether or not I want this. I played the original rouge (and rouge like games since) game since back the 80's.

Is there a lite version I could try?

AWESOME --- I am loving this game --- its so nice to play it again after so many years and I love the new look. Time for me to finish the game I am on now ---sadly only level 7 --- this Fat Bastard is getting hungry! :p

I agree, a light version would be nice to have :)

We love you too! But only as a friend. Or perhaps as a game developer and his devoted player. Or something not too awkward ;)

Well, we'd like to do a lite version, but it's tough to decide how to make the cut. Do we just cut it short after 3 or 4 levels? Cut it off by ending on a level with no stairs? That'd be frustrating. We could do a lite version that chronicles your quest to the dungeons of doom- maybe overland through a forest... That would require new programming and artwork of course :)

So yes, we have thought about it a lot, but not sure what the best solution is for a lite version that would be compelling and interesting! We've improved the game so much over the original concept now, its tough to compare with any of the existing basic Rogue games, so I can understand the desire...

Id say the level cap would be the best thing to do for a lite version....or maybe if you were really sinister have the game cut right before the player leveld up :)

  8. Oh, don't be such a wuss. Buy it. Your iPhone will thank you, your brain will be entertained, food will taste better, women will find you irresistible, your acne will clear right up, and Ed McMahon will personally knock on your door and tell you that you may have just won a million dollars. What's the problem?

As for me, just updated. I was kicking major ass today with a +4 blessed katana, +6/+7 banded mail, ring of regeneration, +3 ring of strength (had 21 strength with it), and all sorts of other cool things ... and then I went and did something stupid like take the armor off to try some new banded mail only to find out it was -2 cursed, I couldn't remove it, and I couldn't find a damned scroll of remove curse before a bloody griffin took me out on level 19.

So I have no saved game to worry about.

    F&%@ing griffins.

Updated! The adjustment to tap sensitivity is god-send :)

Man, I'm dying here! That's the new funniest post of the day (sorry Ventura, you can have second place for now!) :D Thanks for the vote of confidence! And oh, uh, sorry about those Griffins. We hate them too. Filthy buggers :)

SurgE- really glad you approve of the new tap sensitivity. Many fingers died to bring you that improvement!

Monopoly- A level cap may be an option, but we'd have to introduce some other limits too... I'd wager a really clever rogue could survive long enough to get bored with a lite version otherwise ;)

I think dungeon level limits should be good. Maybe let the dude descend up to level 5? you can throw in a level cap at level 3 or something. So you won't be able to progress either ways without buying the game.

  12. So ... are you saying I should stop tidying the place up for Ed?

My own dumb fault. Why the hell did I want to go try on the new armor? Mine was kick-ass. I know, because I didn't want to waste the identify scroll I had, that's why. I didn't need banded mail anyway. Shoulda left it.

    Stupid.

Oh well. Try, try again. Maybe I'll find that +6 banded mail again on level 1.

I love the ability to zoom in --- I am tapping on the character less. I would still love a D-pad overlay over the map --so you can continously move without having to double tap -- along with the screen tap option ---mabey you could click the gold to switch between the 2. You would have way less finger movement -- think of how much you fingers would love you after this was implemented --Dont get me wrong I love the game -- I just hate having to tap on the top of the screen when I want to move up.

If you had 2 virtual buttons on either side of the virtual D pad ---one for shooting and one for moving ---then you could implement a quick switch between ranged and melee weapons --- then the game could be played with one thumb ---you just have to hold the ipod with one hand ---- now i have to hold it with both hands to play--the reason this sucks is you look cooler when standing in line while playing with 1 hand ---makes it look easier ---and it was minus 20 outside today and I had to walk to work because my bike was frozen solid ---yeah winter!

---does any one like the idea of a quick switch between ranged weapons and melee? --without having to go through the inventory every time.

Man, I feel for you... I live in cold territory as well.

If you were using a D-Pad system, do you think you'd still want to touch the character to perform inventory and special actions? Would you just use it as a real D-pad (just leaning your thumb down on the direction you want to go), or expect to double tap on it too? No promises yet :D but it's not out of the question as an optional control scheme... I can certainly see the poor Rogue Addict's need to keep one hand warm in bad weather!

Quick-Switching between melee and ranged weapons will probably be a feature in the "advanced" game. The classic rogue used that as another feature to make you plan your moves more carefully- you could shoot at a monster, but had to remember to switch back over to your other weapon while there was still *one* square left between you, or you'd be caught with your pants down, and a short bow in your hand... ;)

I think that the d-pad --8 sided should be for movement only -- a button in the middle for inventory would be hit to often by mistake --- if this control scheme was used you could also have 3 buttons --- 1 on either side and 1 on top ---- with the ones on the sides being either --shooting -- changing between melee and ranged weapons ---- scrolls and potions --- with the 1 on top being general inventory --- just a though to make the game more playeable to those who have never heard of Rogue ---and it would make the game playeable with 1 hand --so the buttons and pad need to be on the botton as the top is to hard to hit while holding with 1 hand.

Having the character stop infront of the door instead of 1 step off of it make the game even faster! YEAH

and to clarify -- my other hand was in my pocket encased in a very warm glove ---it just sounded weird --sorry :p

You are doing a great job with the updates --- and I like the fact that you are always looking for ways to make it more playeable and functional on the new device --- inovation is needed to keep this classic fresh --- I play this now more than I ever did back in the day because it has been improved ---thanks a bunch! Rogue and Angband were on all the computers and laptops I have ever owned ---now I can play on the go -- or when just walking around ------:) ---

Great! Really glad that Rogue Touch has become your favorite! We'll definitely keep trying to make it even better... :)

If we get some spare time this weekend maybe we can do a mock-up of a D-pad to mess with and see how realistic this is for a roguelike! I'd think if your thumb was always on a D-pad you'd also need the mini-map to move above your character too. Lots of details to consider. If we did end up implementing one it would of course be an option (probably off by default unless we want to cater directly to new gamers)...

Stuff gets erased everytime you update? It doesn't matter because this is a quick pick up and play thing?

Well, to explain simply the save game file gets erased because we're changing and adding to the available items in the game each time. If we didn't erase the saved game RT would crash when starting up, and that would put us into one-star-review hell :D

It's very difficult to drag out a game in Rogue Touch more than an hour or two, so we figure it shouldn't be too hard to finish your current game before downloading the update. ;)

thats going to happen --- so make sure you end a game before you update. If you are on level 19 or so ---keep playing and dont update --- you will most likely die soon anyway at the "hands" of some vile slime or ghoul...the update will be there still ... its not going anywhere.

    Excellent

I noticed the double tap speed changes immediately. It's much better.

Thank you for the default zoom level!

The overall feel/user experience is really improving. Keep up the good work. It looks like you've been working many long nights.
