CD, Is a weapon that gives +1,+3 better than +3,+1? Please explain the mechanics of +dmg vs +"chance to hit"
Okay, in the original Dungeons and Dragons, the chance you had to hit an opponent was determined by a roll of a d20 (20-sided) die. If the number you rolled on the die was greater than the opponent's armour class, you successfully landed a blow. So, for example, let's say your opponent is wearing armour with protection bonuses totalling an AC of 10, which gives your opponent an AC of 0. (Remember, armour class starts at 10 (naked) and any armour or protections you wear/have cast on you have an armour class value of their own, which is subtracted from your AC, so armour with an AC of 4 gives you an AC of 6 because 4-10=6.) Right, so your opponent has an AC of 0. That means you have to roll an 11 or higher on a d20 to score a hit. To-hit bonuses add to the value of the d20 rolled. So if your opponent has an AC of 0, and you roll a 9, you wouldn't normally hit. However, if your weapon has a +3 to-hit bonus, it's like you rolled a 12 instead, so you score a hit. The to-damage modifier works pretty much the same, only with how much damage you do. Each weapon has a specific potential damage value based on different types of dice rolled. One weapon may do 2d4 damage, which means it will do between 2 and 8 damage. Another may do 3d6, which means it does between 3 and 18 damage. The to-hit modifier once again increases how much damage you do by its value. So if your weapon has a +2 to-damage bonus and normally does 2d4 damage, it will instead do 4-10 points of damage. Bonus modifiers on weapons are always listed in To-Hit/To-Damage order. So, the bottom line is neither bonus is better than the other; it really depends on the situation. One makes it easier to strike your opponent, while the other causes more damage when you do hit. Hope that clears things up.
deadclown, that's a fantastic endorsement! I can see you've already put a lot of thought into this even with the limited time you had to play through so far... And you're right, if we are careful to preserve the classic mode and keep moving Advanced mode forward with smaller steps it should be possible to maintain the balance that we require. Traps that break after a couple of monster triggers could be a way to handle that issue. I'd probably still need to tweak the monsters HP and frequency, but not as much. A shop that offered high powered equipment or unlimited numbers of healing potions, raise level potions, etc.. that would be very bad news! I think you've got some good ideas there. Most likely there would be some core items that you could buy a finite amount of, and then a small random chance you might be able to buy something special like a flaming weapon! Grab bags are an interesting idea too Scott30, sorry that I was not available overnight to answer your questions, but I see that Mindfield was able to chime in a bit. Very glad you had a good first experience even with limited knowledge! That's a pretty detailed explanation! Do you mind if I take it and merge that into the FAQ we're working on?
All of our settings exist in the Settings App itself. That is the icon with the little gears on it on your home-page. Check out some more info about the settings here. You might have a number of apps or games that have settings there, but it can be confusing if you never knew to check. We're looking at bringing all of them into the game itself in a future update.
Yeah, while having a central point for settings is kind of cute, I think most apps out there handle this stuff internally. Off on a bit of a tangent about Settings, but I'm still trying to figure out what the heck the "Nike + iPod" nonsense is about. I don't have a "Nike" app so what are these settings actually for?
I was not even remotely interested in this game to start with - the graphics weren't obviously pretty enough. Bought it in the Easter sale however, and am totally hooked! This game is fantastic!! I just read through the 15 pages here and countless more on the RT forum learning about strategies and stuff... Having played it a bit now I actually think the graphics are pretty good. I really like the monsters anyway. Compared to the original rogue games (which I never played) this looks fantastic. My only suggestion would be the menu screen - could you make it match the design of the rest of the game? It seems the game itself and even the high-score screen match, but the main menus gradients/shadows/rounded buttons seem really out of place?
It's got something to do with Nike shoes -- supposedly certain Nike shoes have a sensors inside them that can communicate with the ipod touch and keep track of exercise related stats - distance ran and things like that.
Okay like I said, I finally sat down and played a few games over the weekend. I really love how RANDOM this game can get haha. There's many times where you feel like your luck in a "situation" couldn't get worse and then there's times where you felt you clutched it like a champion. My best run was lvl 15 with a normal character (wasn't aware of special characters.. what are they exactly? how to you play as them?) and I remember there was a time or two I got myself out of almost inevitable doom and the sense of achievement is awesome! But what I love is how, I went to go loot this skeleton remains on the floor for loot like usual, to find that the skeleton became animated and completely rocked me. I was pissed but almost brought to laughing out loud. Great stuff! Also, CD you've done a great job of remastering Rogue for the iPhone... But with your dedication and love for the game, I think you could make an amazing ADVANCED mode much like Shiren's game. I hope that you decide to actually go through with it. It'd be amazing.
Special characters are the game's secret "pre-made" characters and they start with special equipment. Key in a special character's name when you start a new game. Try characters from marvel comics, Tolkien, myths, etc. I prefer to play normal characters myself.
Also guys, I read that the Spartan Cuirass grants you "Extra Strike" or something along those lines... can anyone give me details on how this works?
Is there a FAQ somewhere where I could learn how do to things like how to get my character to go down stairs?
Yeah, that's why I have played it for years, and even play Rogue Touch itself still (even though I should be working!). That randomness combined with the sense of accomplishment you get for thinking your way out of a bad situation is great! Your previous corpse can be a bit tough to dispatch, even more so if you happened to die with a secret character or were on your way back up with the Amulet! The bonus is, if you manage to kill it you'd get a lot more of your old equipment back than the single item a normal "corpse looting" would net you. Advanced mode for Rogue Touch is still on the table, but I would love to do an even more advanced new rogue-like as a separate game, more of a combo of Shiren and Diablo I think... just some thoughts I have been rolling around... there's no code yet but it's something I think everyone would enjoy! Graphics are the big downfall these days, especially in the App Store. We only have a couple of pictures and an icon and a bit of text that probably not many people read to try to make you see how great our game is! We intentionally shot for the middle of the road with graphics as I expected most of our players to know the roots and probably have played the original many times. The complete lack of graphics in the original rogue did not handicap its popularity so I reasoned I shouldn't get too fancy, lest I turn off people who might think it was a watered down imitator I'm very glad to see that once you get past the initial "meh" of the game things start to make a whole lot more sense and the addictive gameplay takes hold. Several people agree the title screen just doesn't quite "feel right" compared to the rest of the game. I really like it for the tie-in to the original rogue, ASCII "@" character representing your player... Maybe we can retain that and change it in some way. I've spoken with one or two people about some visual design tweaks already, so we'll see where it goes! The Spartan Cuirass, while worn, randomly gives you an extra attack when fighting monsters. You might catch the text "you slip in for a second strike" scroll by when you do, and you'll see the second attack in a row. Wearing this armor uses slightly more food than a regular set of armor, but not enough to offset it's usefulness in my opinion! Extol, hope you like it! We decided to continue the sale at least until our "What we're playing" feature with Apple in iTunes is done, which should be ending tomorrow. So many people can see our game for the first time, I wanted to give them just a bit more of a chance to take the plunge before things fade back to normal ---- yacoub- going down stairs can be accomplished by touching your character directly when standing on a set of stairs. Normally this goes to your inventory, but if you are on the stairs, it will ask you if you want to go down them or enter your inventory... Oh, and if you play using the D-pad control, touch the "i" button on the right side of the D-pad for the same function. I am trying to prepare some basic stuff for a FAQ now, every time I think we've got a good start something tears me away from it though. If all goes well we will have some stuff posted in the next day or so at our website. In the meantime, for a generic rogue FAQ that does not entirely apply to Rogue Touch, read this. And if you have specific Rogue Touch questions please ask here or in my forums and someone will definitely have an answer pretty quickly for you
Ok so what determines how much damage will be done? If their AC is 0 and you roll an 8 with a hit bonus of 3 you score a hit. Now what determines how much damage? Is it 8? Also, lets say their AC is 9 and I roll a 2d4 and roll an 8 with a +dmg of 3. Is the hit determined before the damage? In another words, would I not land a hit because my damage before the modifier is less than their armor? If the +damage is also used to determined whether or not damage is made, I cant envision a time where I would want +chance to hit over +dmg
Just picked up the game and am loving it so far. Checked out the ChronoSoft forums too, its nice to see so much support behind the app. Hope the sale goes welll!
CD, Diablo series is my favorite game of all time. If you have a love for Shiren and especially Diablo combined with your skill and dedication you could make something insanely awesome.
